The response of some photosynthetic parameters (CO2 assimilation, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, water-use efficiency, and chlorophyll content), shoot development, and the morphological features of the root system to differentiated conditions of nitrogen supply was tested in festulolium (Festulolium braunii K. Richert A. Camus) varieties (Felopa and Sulino). Nitrogen fertilization with no nitrogen added
[0 g(N)], single dosage [0.23 g(N)], and double dosage [0.46 g(N)] per pot and per year was applied. Lack of nitrogen resulted in formation of longer and finer roots and lowered chlorophyll content, CO₂ assimilation, and water-use efficiency, resulting in lower dry matter accumulation. Application of both dosages of nitrogen resulted in improved aboveground features, while root features were enhanced without nitrogen fertilization. Dependence between physiological parameters and morphological traits was significant and positively correlated in the case of the aboveground parts of plants and negatively correlated to the belowground parts., G. Adding green component to growth light had a profound effect on biomass accumulation in lettuce. However, conflicting views on photosynthetic efficiency of green light, which have been reported, might occur due to nonuniform light sources used in previous studies. In an attempt to reveal plausible mechanisms underlying the differential photosynthetic and developmental responses to green light, we established a new way of light treatment modeled according to the principle of gene "knock out". Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. youmaicai) was grown under two different light spectra, including a wide spectrum of light-emitting diode (LED) light (CK) and a wide spectrum LED light lacking green (480-560 nm) (LG). Total PPFD was approximately 100 µmol(photon) m-2 s-1 for each light source. As compared to lettuce grown under CK, shoot dry mass, photosynthetic pigment contents, total chlorophyll to carotenoids ratio, absorptance of PPFD, and CO2 assimilation showed a remarkable decrease under LG, although specific leaf area did not show significant difference. Furthermore, plants grown under LG showed significantly lower stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, and transpiration compared with CK. The plants under CK exhibited significantly higher intrinsic quantum efficiency, respiration rate, saturation irradiance, and obviously lower compensation irradiance. Finally, we showed that the maximum ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate-saturated rate of carboxylation, the maximum rate of electron transport, and rate of triosephosphate utilization were significantly reduced by LG. These results highlighted the influence of green light on photosynthetic responses under the conditions used in this study. Adding green component (480-560 nm) to growth light affected biomass accumulation of lettuce in controllable environments, such as plant factory and Bioregenerative Life Support System., H. Liu, Y. The study of leaf vascular systems is important in order to understand the fluid dynamics of water movement in leaves. Recent studies have shown how these systems can be involved in the performance of photosynthesis, which is linked to the density of the vascular network per unit of leaf area. The aim of the present study was to highlight the correlation between a leaf vein density (VD) and net photosynthetic rate (PN), which was undertaken using a digital camera, a stereoscopic microscope, and a light source. The proposed hypothesis was tested, for the first time, on the leaves of two cultivars of Vitis vinifera (L.). A significant difference was found between the VD of mature leaves of the two cultivars. VD was also significantly correlated with the maximum leaf PN. These findings support the hypothesis that the vascular system of grape leaves can be correlated with leaf photosynthesis performance., M. Pagano, P. Corona, P. Storchi., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Anthropogenic activities are changing global precipitation regimes and result in many middle latitude arid and semiarid regions experiencing less precipitation and more extreme weather events. However, little is known about the response of active ingredient accumulation in the medicinal herb Plantago depressa Willd. Therefore, we carried out a greenhouse experiment in order to study effect of control (CK, normal water supply equal to 309 mm per four months), -30 (-WS) and +30% (+WS) of the control water supply on the photosynthesis (PN), C/N ratio, and plantamajoside accumulation in P. depressa. Our results showed that compared with the-WS and CK treatments, the +WS treatment significantly enhanced biomass, the C/N ratio, plantamajoside concentration, yield in shoots and roots, and PN, but declined the N concentration in shoots and roots. The plantamajoside concentration was positively correlated with PN, the soluble sugar content, and the C/N ratio, but negatively correlated with the N concentration. Our results suggested that, under experimental conditions, +WS increased the C/N ratio and promoted the plantamajoside accumulation of P. depressa., Z. Li, W. Bai, L. Zhang, L. Our experiment was carried out in order to explore effects of plant growth regulators (PGR; thidiazuron, paclobutrazol, and ascorbic acid) on physiological traits of wheat genotypes under water surplus and deficit conditions. Study revealed that relative water content, membrane stability index, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate (PN), and maximal quantum yield of PSII improved with PGRs application across the genotypes both under irrigation and water stress. The response of HD 2733 genotype was more positive toward PGRs treatment as compared to other genotypes under water stress. Higher PN and chlorophyll contents were observed in HD 2987 followed by C 306 genotype under water-stress conditions. Moreover, Rubisco small subunit (SSU) expression was lower in wheat genotypes under water stress as compared to irrigated conditions. Application of PGRs led to upregulation of SSU under water stress, while no significant change was found in Rubisco level and activity under irrigated condition in dependence on PGRs treatments. Yield-related traits showed also significant reduction under water-stress conditions, while application of PGRs enhanced the yield and its components. Results indicated that the PGRs exhibited a positive interaction and synergetic effect on water stressed wheat plants in terms of photosynthetic machinery and yield., S. K. Dwivedi, A. Arora, V. P. Influence of different phosphorus concentrations was studied in four rice varieties (Akhanphou, MTU1010, RP BIO 226, and Swarna) differing in their tolerance to low phosphorus. There was an increase in shoot and root dry mass with the increase in phosphorus concentration. At the low phosphorus concentration at both tillering and reproductive stages, Swarna, followed by Akhanphou, recorded maximum biomass for both roots and shoots, while the minimum was observed in RP BIO 226. Reduction in photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and internal CO2 concentration at low phosphorus concentrations were observed at both tillering and reproductive stages in all the genotypes. In low phosphorus, maximum photosynthetic rate was found in Swarna followed by Akhanphou. Phosphorus deficiency did not alter the maximum efficiency of PSII photochemistry, however, there was a reduction in effective PSII quantum yield, electron transport rate, and coefficient of photochemical quenching, while the coefficient of nonphotochemical quenching was higher in the low phosphorus-treated plants. Prolonged exposure to excessive energy and failure to utilize the energy in carbon-reduction cycle induced the generation of reactive oxygen species, which affected PSII as indicated by the fluorescence traits. The reduction was less severe in case of Swarna and Akhanphou. The activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase increased in roots under low phosphorus concentration indicating that photoprotective mechanisms have been initiated in rice plants in response to phosphorus deficiency. Comparatively, Swarna and Akhanphou exhibited a higher biomass, higher photosynthetic rate, and better reactive oxygen species-scavenging ability which conferred tolerance under low phosphorus conditions., N. Using measures of gas exchange and photosynthetic chain activity, we found some differences between grapevine inflorescence and leaf in terms of photosynthetic activity and photosynthesis regulations. Generally, the leaf showed the higher net photosynthesis (PN) and lower dark respiration than that of the inflorescence until the beginning of the flowering process. The lower (and negative) PN indicated prevailing respiration over photosynthesis and could result from a higher metabolic activity rather than from a lower activity of the photosynthetic apparatus. Considerable differences were observed between both organs in the functioning and regulation of PSI and PSII. Indeed, in our conditions, the quantum yield efficiency and electron transport rate of PSI and PSII were higher in the inflorescence compared to that of the leaf; nevertheless, protective regulatory mechanisms of the photosynthetic chain were clearly more efficient in the leaf. This was in accordance with the major function of this organ in grapevine, but it highlighted also that inflorescence seems to be implied in the whole carbon balance of plant. During inflorescence development, the global PSII activity decreased and PSI regulation tended to be similar to the leaf, where photosynthetic activity and regulations remained more stable. Finally, during flowering, cyclic electron flow (CEF) around PSI was activated in parallel to the decline in the thylakoid linear electron flow. Inflorescence CEF was double compared to the leaf; it might contribute to photoprotection, could promote ATP synthesis and the recovery of PSII., M. Sawicki, B. Courteaux, F. Rabenoelina, F. Although maize (Zea mays L.) plants utilize light efficiently, the expression of high light-efficient genes and stomatal factors is regulated by light conditions and affects photosynthesis of plants. In this study, we investigated the effects of different light qualities on the expression of the photosynthetic genes, such as pep1, pdk1, ZmSTOMAGEN, and psad1, and on stomatal function in maize seedlings. For both maize genotypes, Zhengdan 958 and Xianyu 335, light with wavelengths shorter than 490 nm enhanced the expression of pdk1 and ZmSTOMAGEN, whereas the expression of pdk1 positively correlated with ZmSTOMAGEN. Light with wavelengths longer than 630 nm or shorter than 490 nm (band pass filter) increased the expression of pep1 and psad1. Although the expression of four genes in Zhengdan 958 was significantly higher than that of Xianyu 335, changes in the expression of ZmSTOMAGEN, pdk1, or pep1 exerted no significant influence on stomatal function and photosynthetic rate. Our results suggest that light with wavelengths shorter than 490 nm promoted the expression of stomatal proteins and pdk1, facilitated the absorption of inorganic elements, and contributed to stomatal function in photosynthesis. Meanwhile, light with wavelengths longer than 630 nm inhibited the expression of pep1 and pdk1. Light with wavelengths longer than 630 nm or shorter than 490 nm promoted the expression of pep1, pdk1, and psad1., T. D. Liu, X. W. Zhang, Y. Xu, S. Q. Liu, X. W. Chen., and Obsahuje bibliografii
The effect of salinity on some morpho-physiological characteristics in lisianthus cultivars was investigated. Cultivars namely, Blue Picotee (C1), Champagne (C2), Lime Green (C3), and Pure White (C4), were subjected to salt stress (0-60 mM NaCl) in a sand culture and their responses were measured. Our results showed that as a salinity level increased, growth parameters, relative water content, photosynthetic pigments, and gas-exchange characteristics decreased in all cultivars, while root fresh mass, root/shoot length ratio, electrolyte leakage, and a malondialdehyde content increased. However, the changes were less pronounced in C3 and C4 compared to C1 and C2. The regression analysis of the relationship between salinity levels and seedling height or root/shoot length ratio defined two groups with different slope coefficients: C1 and C2 as salt-sensitive cultivars and C3 and C4 as salt-tolerant cultivars. Shoot dry mass and leaf area tolerance indices were less affected by salinity in C3 and C4 compared to those in C1 and C2. Further, C3 and C4 showed higher photosynthetic rates, greater stomatal conductances, and accumulated greater K+ and Ca2+ contents and K+/Na+ ratios in roots and shoots compared to those in C1 and C2. The results suggests that C3 and C4 could be recommended as resistant cultivars due to maintaining higher growth, water balance, leaf gas exchange, ion compartmentalization, and lower lipid peroxidation in response to salinity compared to C1 and C2., N. The inhibition of photorespiration can be used to improve plant carbon fixation. In order to compare the effects of three photorespiration inhibitors [glycine, NaHSO3, and isonicotinyl hydrazide (INH)], photosynthetic parameters of leaves sprayed respectively with these chemicals were examined and their inhibiting efficiency was evaluated in Caragana korshinskii. Our results showed that 5 mM glycine could reduce the photorespiratory rate (PR) effectively, while the net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), and intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) significantly increased. The ratio of electron flow for ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylation to RuBP oxygenation was elevated markedly. NaHSO3 and INH could also suppress the PR in some cases, whereas PN was not improved. The glyoxylate content increased considerably after application of low concentrations of glycine. These results suggested that low concentrations of glycine could suppress photorespiration by
feed-back inhibition of glyoxylate and enhance photosynthesis by regulating gs, Ci, and the distribution of electron flow in C. korshinskii., T. Kang, H. D. Wu, B. Y. Lu, X. J. Luo, C. M. Gong, J. Bai., and Obsahuje bibliografii
