- Description:
- This text considers the early creative output of Ignác Cornova, in particular his lesserknown odes and his war poetry. It draws on contemporary research of the latter third of the 18th century focussing on the dynamic social change of the period, the transformation of the media, the emergence of a modern ‘public’, and changing perceptions of artistic as opposed to educational output. One of the difficulties of conceptualizing this period is the existence of two opposing trends – the older ‘Baroque’ tradition and the more ‘modern’ currents of the future national movement. Our text largely obviates this dichotomy by proposing a framework in which Cornova’s oeuvre is seen as evidence of an idiosyncratic cultural situation with its own features and markers. The aim of our study is to place Cornova’s early works within the literary context of his time – a context hard to appreciate today. We are not looking for the ‘future’ Cornova in those beginnings, nor the ‘embryos’ of his later development. Rather, we hope to rehabilitate the literary context in the Czech lands in the 1770s and 1780s as it veered between late Baroque odes, war reportage, and enlightenment patriotism. Alongside Cornova we consider now forgotten figures such as Vojtěch Koťara, Michael Denis, Johann Joseph Eberle and Václav Thám. The result is not a group biography, but rather a problem analysis of one segment of a period that defies unequivocal definition.

- Description:

- Language:

- Description:
- The aim of this study is to set out a relevant contextual framework for interpreting poetry published on (Czech) Instagram. The author looks at the material under study from a number of perspectives, including generational, economic and especially media perspectives, ultimately finding adequate contextualization outside the framework of literary discourse and actually within the aesthetics and communication practice of Instagram, while drawing key methodological inspiration from the reflections of new media theorist Lev Manovich. In conclusion, Instapoetry is characterized as a paraliterary phenomenon situated on the margins of the literary system, combining elements of literary and Instagram aesthetics and guided by hybrid economics principles.

5. Composition technique in Dhūmil´s poetry

- Subject:
- poetry
- Language:

- Description:
- This paper deals with composition technique in the poetry of Dhūmil (Sudāmā Pāṇḍey “Dhūmil”, 1936-1975). While the poet is capable of producing “attractive” images, as may be seen in some unpublished fragments of his earliest work, in the poems in the collection Sansad se saṛak tak (From Parliament to the Street, 1972, 2nd edn. 1975), he uses a “visionary” or hallucinatory method to create provocative images. This provocative vein runs through the entire collection, as one image does not slide seamlessly to the next as it does in Muktibodh’s poetry

- Language:
- English
- Description:
- The paper is a follow-up to the survey One Century of English Translations of Ján Kollár (1832–1931) and it aims to sum up and evaluate English book translations of Kollár since 1940. His appearance in five more anthologies from the 1940s to the 1970s together with previously analysed translations makes him the most frequently translated Slovak poet of all times into English although his working language was Czech. Some of the translations mentioned here are re-worked versions of previous translations (Selver), others are new (Ginsburg, French). From the point of view of versification, various methods to replace the original quantitative verse were adopted from accentual-syllabic or accentual substitution to the use of typical English form – blank verse. and Štúdia nadväzuje na náš prehľad Storočie anglických prekladov Jána Kollára (1832–1931) a jej cieľom je zosumarizovať a zhodnotiť anglické knižné preklady Kollára od 40. rokov 20. storočia.

7. K otázce tzv. nepřeložitelnosti poezie

- Subject:
- translatology, poetry, posibility to be translated, Jiří Levý, functional equivalence, the concept of functionalist translation, skopos, noetic compatibility, and Slavonic Studies
- Language:
- Czech
- Description:
- The study examines how in the Czech tradition translation of poetry has been perceived. The Czech tradition of translation of poetry is specific and translators have high demands. The study is looking for common and different points in the translation of poetry at two opposing theories of translation: the theory of functional equivalence from Jiří Levý and functionalist concept of translation, which brought into Czech Zbyněk Fišer. After a confrontation with other translation theories of Ján Vilikovský and Milan Hrdlička can we see, that the area of translation of poetry is so specific and demanding, that it is difficult to apply the scale of individual theories. On the contrary, it seems that just the translation of poetry can be a common ground for all these theories.

10. One century of English translations of Ján Kollár (1832–1931)

- Subject:
- translation, poetry, anthology, rhythmic substitution, semantic shift, semantic density, sonet, metaphor, preklad, poézia, antológia, rytmická substitúcia, sémantický posun, sémantická hustota, metafora, and Slavonic Studies
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- This survey attempts to summarise English translations of poems written or collected by a Slovak poet Ján Kollár that appeared during one century both in Great Britain and in the United States, from Bowring's seminal anthology in 1832 to Underwood's selection of Slavic Poetry in 1931. They prove that Ján Kollár is the most frequently translated poet of both the Slovak National Revival and the history of Slovak poetry. In addition to collecting the most relevant sources (anthologies and surveys of literature), the paper analyses and evaluates particular translations, some in mutual comparison, to show methods and procedures of respective translators. Even though the poetry of Ján Kollár became a part of many anthologies, a separate English edition with the selection of his poems is still missing. and Tento prehľad sa usiluje zosumarizovať anglické preklady básní, ktoré napísal alebo zozbieral Ján Kollár a vyšli v priebehu storočia vo Veľkej Británii a v USA – od prelomovej Bowringovej antológie z roku 1832 až po Underwoodovej výber zo slovanskej poézie v roku 1831. Dokazujú, že Ján Kollár je najčastejšie prekladaným básnikom tak slovenského národného obrodenia, ako aj celých dejín slovenskej poézie. Okrem zozbierania najrelevantnejších zdrojov (antológií a prehľadov litreratúry) štúdia analyzuje a hodnotí konkrétne preklady, niektoré vo vzájomnom porovnaní, a naznačuje metódy a postupy jednotlivých prekladateľov. Hoci sa poézia Jána Kollára stala súčasťou mnohých antológií, samostatný výber z jeho tvorby v angličtine stále chýba.
