Seedling performance may determine plant distribution, especially in water-limited environments. Plants of Caragana korshinskii commonly grow in arid and semiarid areas in northwestern China, and endure water shortage in various ways, but little is known about their performance when water shortage occurs at early growth stages. The water relations, photosynthetic activity, chlorophyll (Chl) content and proline accumulation were determined in 1-year-old seedlings growing in a 1:1 mixture of Loess soil and Perlite and subjected to (1) a water deficit for 20 days and (2) kept adequately watered throughout. The water deficit induced low (-6.1 MPa) predawn leaf water potentials (LWP), but did not induce any leaf abscission. Stomatal conductance (gs), leaf transpiration rate (E), and net photosynthetic rate (PN) decreased immediately following the imposition of the water deficit, while the maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) (Fv/Fm) and the effective quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII) decreased 15 days later. An early and rapid decrease in gs, reduced E, increased Chl (a+b) loss, increased the apparent rate of photochemical transport of electrons through PSII (ETR)/PN, as well as a gradual increase in non-photochemical quenching of fluorescence (NPQ) and proline may have contributed to preventing ΦPSII from photodamage. C. korshinskii seedlings used a stress-tolerance strategy, with leaf maintenance providing a clear selective advantage, considering the occasional rainfall events during the growing season. and X. W. Gas exchanges and leaf water potential (Ψw) of six-years-old trees of fourteen Prunus amygdalus cultivars, grafted on GF-677, were studied in May, when fruits were in active growing period, and in October, after harvesting. The trees were grown in the field under rain fed conditions. Predawn Ψw showed lower water availability in October compared with May. The lowest Ψw values at midday in May increased gradually afterwards, while in October they decreased progressively until night, suggesting a higher difficulty to compensate the water lost by transpiration. However, relative water content (RWC) measured in the morning was similar in both periods, most likely due to some rainfall that occurred in September and first days of October that could be enough to re-hydrate canopy without significantly increasing soil water availability. The highest net photosynthetic rate (PN) was found in both periods early in the morning (08:00-11:00). Reductions in PN from May to October occurred in most cultivars except in José Dias and Ferrastar. In all cultivars a decrease in stomatal conductance (gs) was observed. Photosynthetic capacity (Pmax) did not significantly change from spring to autumn in nine cultivars, revealing a high resistance of photosynthetic machinery of this species to environmental stresses, namely high temperature and drought. Osmotic adjustment was observed in some cultivars, which showed reductions of ca. 23 % (Duro d' Estrada, José Dias) and 15 % (Tuono) in leaf osmotic potential (Ψπ). Such decreases were accompanied by soluble sugars accumulation. The Portuguese cultivar José Dias had a higher photosynthetic performance than the remaining genotypes. and M. C. Matos ... [et al.].
In crowns of chestnut trees the absorption of radiant energy is not homogeneous; leaves from the south (S) side are the most irradiated, but leaves from the east (E) and west (W) sides receive around 70 % and those from north (N) face less than 20 % of the S irradiation. Compared to the S leaves, those from the N side were 10 % smaller, their stomata density was 14 % smaller, and their laminae were 21 % thinner. N leaves had 0.63 g(Chl) m-2, corresponding to 93 % of total chlorophyll (Chl) amount in leaves of S side. The ratios of Chl a/b were 2.9 and 3.1 and of Chl/carotenoids (Car) 5.2 and 4.8, respectively, in N and S leaves. Net photosynthetic rate (PN) was 3.9 µmol(CO2) m-2 s-1 in S leaves, in the E, W, and N leaves 81, 77, and 38 % of that value, respectively. Morning time (10:00 h) was the period of highest PN in the whole crown, followed by 13:00 h (85 % of S) and 16:00 h with 59 %. Below 500 µmol m-2 s-1 of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), N leaves produced the highest PN, while at higher PPFD, the S leaves were most active. In addition, the fruits from S side were 10 % larger than those from the N side. and J. Gomes-Laranjo ... [et al.].
Diurnal courses in net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf water potential (ψ), internal CO2 concentration (ci), and water use efficiency (WUE) were studied as season progressed, in relation to environmental factors in field grown Prunus amygdalus. In sun leaves PN reached maximum between 09:00 to 11:00 h and subsequently declined when high temperature and low humidity occurred. An increase was observed late in the afternoon. A decrease in gs and ψ was found as season progressed in both years of measurements. In periods of high evaporative demand, ψ was very low, however, it did not explain the reductions of PN in all the three periods (spring, early and late summer). Midday depression of PN and gs seemed to be related with leaf temperature (Tl) and high irradiance. Increase in ci and F0 and decrease in Fv/Fm found between 12:00 and 14:00 h corresponded to the decrease in PN. Therefore, a transient modification of photosynthetic machinery might be considered. WUE was negatively correlated with vapour pressure difference of leaf to air, that decreased during the day. The September values, higher than in the previous months, were due to the lower seasonal decreases in PN than in gs. and M. C. Matos ... [et al.].
Diurnal patterns of leaf water potential (ΨW), canopy net photosynthetic rate (PN), evapotranspiration rate (E), canopy temperature (Tc), and water use efficiency (WUE) of clusterbean [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub., cv. Desi] were studied at six phenological stages of plant development under field conditions at CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. The highest PN, E, and WUE were observed at pod initiation stage (61 DAS). Daily maxima of PN were usually between 11:00 to 14:00 h while those of E and WUE between 12:30 and 16:00 h. PN was mainly dependent on photosynthetically active radiation and E on air temperature (Ta) but the relationships varied at different growth stages. WUE declined with the increase in Ta. At mid-day, ΨW was highest during pod initiation. and A. Kumar ... [et al.].
The effect of drought on plant water relations and photosynthesis of Vigna glabrescens (Vg) and Vigna unguiculata (cvs. 1183, EPACE-1 and Lagoa), which differ in their drought resistance, was compared. With the increase of drought severity, Vg showed a more gradual stomatal closure and maintained significantly higher levels of stomatal conductance (gs) and photosynthetic activity (PN) than the other genotypes even when minimum relative water content (RWC) values were observed. Furthermore, Vg was the only genotype able to accumulate significant amounts of proline already under moderate water deficit, what could explain the lower osmotic potential (ψs) values observed in these plants. The three V. unguiculata cultivars presented a similar stomatal control under increasing water deficit. A mesophyllic impairment of photosynthetic capacity (Pmax) was detected for cv. 1183 from the beginning of drought onset (85-75 % RWC) while in the Vg plants the values remained unaffected along the whole drought period, indicating that PN decrease observed in this genotype is mainly a consequence of stomatal closure. Such Pmax maintenance suggests the existence of a high mesophyllic ability to cope with increasing tissue dehydration in Vg. and P. Scotti Campos ... [et al.].
The effects of postharvest pretreatments on vase life, keeping quality and carbohydrate concentrations in cut sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus L.) flowers were investigated. Compared to the control, all treatments promoted floret quality and extended longevity. The cut flowers held in the solution containing sucrose + 8-hydroxyquinoline (Suc+HQS) was more effective in promoting absorption rate, achieved greater maximum fresh mass, had better water balance for a longer period, extended the vase life (up to 17 d), and delayed degradation of chlorophylls. The same treatment also enhanced the concentration of soluble carbohydrates in the petals and stems and leaf chlorophyll (Chl) content, whereas it was lowest in silver thiosulphate (STS) treatment. However, concentrations of anthocyanin in the petals were higher for treatment with sucrose or STS plus sucrose than in control or STS alone treatments. Our results suggest that pulse treatment with HQS plus sucrose for 12 h is the most effective for improving pigmentation and use as a commercial cut flower preservative solution to delay flower senescence, enhance quality, and prolong the vase life of sweet pea. The results also showed that soluble carbohydrate concentration in petals and stems is an important factor in determining the vase life of sweet pea flowers., K. M. The influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus Glomus deserticola (Trappe and John) on plant growth, nutrition, flower yield, water relations, chlorophyll (Chl) contents and water-use efficiency (WUE) of snapdragon (Antirhinum majus cv. butterfly) plants were studied in potted culture under well-watered (WW) and water-stress (WS) conditions. The imposed water stress condition significantly reduced all growth parameters, nutrient contents, flower yield, water relations, and Chl pigment content and increased the electrolyte leakage of the plants comparing to those of nonstressed plants. Regardless of the WS level, the mycorrhizal snapdragon plants had significantly higher shoot and root dry mass (DM), WUE, flower yield, nutrient (P, N, K, Mg, and Ca) and Chl contents than those nonmycorrhizal plants grown both under WW or WS conditions. Under WS conditions, the AM colonization had greatly improved the leaf water potential (Ψw), leaf relative water content (RWC) and reduced the leaf electrolyte leakage (EL) of the plants. Although the WS conditions had markedly increased the proline content of the leaves, this increase was significantly higher in nonmycorrhizal than in mycorrhizal plants. This suggests that AM colonization enhances the host plant WS tolerance. Values of benefit and potential dry matter for AM-root associations were highest when plants were stressed and reduced under WW conditions. As a result, the snapdragon plants showed a high degree of dependency on AM fungi which improve plant growth, flower yield, water relations particularly under WS conditions, and these improvements were increased as WS level had increased. This study confirms that AM colonization can mitigate the deleterious effect of water stress on growth and flower yield of the snapdragon ornamental plant., A. A. Asrar, G. M. Abdel-Fattah, K. M. Three-month-old plants of mulberry (Morus alba L. cv. Kanva-2) were subjected to a drought stress by withholding water supply. As the leaf water potential (ΨW) was dropping progressively with the severity of treatment and increasing stress duration, the values of leaf area, dry mass accumulation, total chlorophyll (Chl) content, net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E) were declined. The photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemical efficiency significantly decreased only at a severe stress treatment. The intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) remained unaltered during a mild stress, yet it increased under moderate and severe stresses. The Ci/gs ratio reflected the mesophyll efficiency during water stress. Rewatering of the plants led to an almost complete recovery of PN, E, and gs, indicating that a short-term stress brings about reversible effects only. and S. Ramanjulu ... [et al.].
