There was published a pamphlet called Aké bude Slovensko o sto rokov? (1920), [What will Slovakia be like in 100 years?] just a century ago. It offered a vision of Slovak national state's future – the state flourishing with social welfare, scientific and technological progress and moral maturity of citizens. Adaptation of "happy national home" idea for future, written by engineer Jozef Dohnány (1873 – 1947), carries marks characteristics for utopias. The conference paper approaches to Dohnány's vision as to a branch of modern dynamic utopic phenomenon, creating a communication space, especially in the 19.th and 20.th century, for expressing desires and ideals, testing possibilities of mental borders and calling for social or political mobilization in favour of achievement realistic, or even unrealistic aims. The paper uses interdisciplinary interpretative approach for analysis of Dohnány vision's ideological structure, compares it in relation to More's prototype of utopia and refers to representations of "period's presence" in utopic genre.
The paper deals with the commemoration of early stages of technology research of silica optical fibers in Czechoslovakia till 1993. Technology of three types of telecommunication fibers - polymer-clad-silica, graded-index and single-mode ones and that of several types of specialty optical fibers like polarization maintaining bow-tie fibers or rare-earth doped fibers belong to the most important achievements of this period. The prepared samples exhibited parameters comparable to world-class top production. The technology research was understood not only as a description of a set of receipts but mainly as scientific understanding of process fundaments. Thanks to this approach, in later period it was possible to continue in the research of specialty optical fibers for fiber sensors, fiber amplifiers and fiber lasers. Such research is performed in the Laboratory of Optical Fibers of the Institute of Photonics and Electronics of the Czech Academy of Sciences to date. and Článek připomíná počátky výzkumu technologie křemenných optických vláken vČeskoslovensku do roku 1993. Mezi jeho úspěchy patřilo vypracování technologií tří typů telekomunikačních vláken - ''polymer-clad-silica'', gradientních a jednovidových a dále několika typů speciálních vláken - zachovávajících polarizaci typu ''bow-tie'' a dopovaných ionty vzácných zemin. Připravené vzorky dosahovaly parametrů srovnatelných v té době se světem. Technologický výzkum byl chápán nejen jako popis souboru výrobních postupů, ale zejména jako pochopení vědeckých základů. Díky tomu bylo později možné efektivně pokračovat ve výzkumu speciálních vláken pro vláknové sensory, zesilovače a lasery, který v Laboratoři optických vláken Ústavu fotoniky a elektroniky AVČR pokračuje dodnes.
Formal and technological attributes of pottery mirror potters’ habitus, actions, and decisions inhibited or stimulated by users of pottery. The variability of these attributes in time and space reflects networks of producers embedded in a complex social network. But how the knowledge of pottery manufacturing processes can be used to gain more accurate understanding of the society behind the “chaînes opératoires” when the basis for the interpretation is archaeological evidence? Can archaeologists reach reliable picture on relations between pottery technology and society? Can the interpretations be built on testable hypotheses? Those are painful issues accompanying all the archaeological attempts to understand variability and changes in pottery technology, the issues that motivate the main theme of the thematic issue of Archeologické rozhledy: the pursuit of archaeologists to integrate pottery technology analysis to the complex interpretation of the Neolithic societies. and Formální a technologické vlastnosti keramických nádob mají potenciál odrážet habitus hrnčíře, jeho výrobní postupy a volby, které jsou omezovány nebo naopak stimulovány uživateli jeho výrobků. Je však vůbec možné dobrat se, skrze analýzu výrobních procesů keramiky na základě archeologických nálezů, porozumění tomuto společenskému rámci, který se skrývá za jednotlivými operačními řetězci? Je reálné, aby archeologové dospěli k odpovídající představě vztahů mezi keramickou technologií a společností? Lze v tomto smyslu vytvářet interpretace na základě testovatelných hypotéz? To jsou palčivé otázky, které logicky doprovázejí archeologické studium variability a změn postupů keramické výroby. A jsou to také otázky, jež motivovaly téma tohoto sešitu Archeologických rozhledů: úsilí o zapojení analýz keramické technologie do komplexní interpretace neolitických společností.
The purpose of this paper is to present a new paradigm and an innovative technology for thinking about the future. The concept of time synchronization is introduced as a technology to improve individual competency for balancing the continuous construciton of reinterpreted pasts, presents and futures in order to cope with the aceleration of change, complexity, and uncertainty. This new paradigm is driven by recognition of three factors: 1. Humans are both conservative and novelty generating. 2. Novelty is a key factor of life and humans address novelty through pattern-evolvign creativity. 3. Reality is defined through the unique ability of humans to anticipate and define experience in terms of pattern and category. This article asserts that rapidly expanding human pluarity and novelty require new models concerning relationships of past, present, and future. Such models should adequately address the rapidly changing and more complex conditions in which they are constructed and deconstructed, including the expanding opportunities that accompany them. and Arthur M. On the basis of the refitting of chipped stone industry it has been possible to reconstruct and compare the reduction strategies of three prominent cultural complexes in Moravia during the Early Upper Palaeolithic. Thanks to such refitting, it is possible to describe the basic technological differences between the Bohunician, the Szeletian and the Aurignacian. and Na základě skládanek kamenné štípané industrie se podařilo zrekonstruovat a porovnat operační schéma tří význačných kulturních komplexů na Moravě na počátku mladého paleolitu. Díky těmto remontážím jsme schopni popsat základní technologické rozdíly mezi bohunicienem, szeletienem a aurignacienem.
The paper follows on from a joint research project on the ceramics from the late LBK settlement of Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes, Picardy region, north-eastern France. In the course of this project, studies on raw materials, manufacturing sequences and decoration techniques have revealed a wide variety of technical practices throughout the occupation of the site. Most recently, analysis of variations in raw materials and tempers in relation to manufacturing sequences revealed that production was mostly carried out at house level, with the producers in each house implementing their own clay recipe and pot-forming method. Here we extend this research by comparing data on pot-forming and decoration at Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes. In this new study, no obvious relationships could be observed between pottery manufacturing sequences and decoration. However, comparison of the various house assemblages indicates a possible link between atypical decoration (i.e. non-local LBK styles) and exogenous pot-forming methods. Although requiring validation on a larger sample of ceramic assemblages from other sites, these preliminary observations provide some new insights into the complex dynamics at play in LBK settlements. and Článek vychází ze společného výzkumného projektu zaměřeného na keramický soubor ze sídliště LBK Cuirylès-Chaudardes (Pikardie, severovýchodní Francie). V rámci tohoto projektu byly studovány různé kroky výroby keramiky na úrovni domácnosti: komplexní průzkum surovin, výrobních postupů a výzdobných technik odhalil vysokou variabilitu technických praktik v průběhu osídlení lokality. Nedávno jsme analyzovali také rozdíly v použitých surovinách a ostřivech v závislosti na výrobních postupech. Tato první křížová analýza odhalila, že výroba se odehrávala převážně na úrovni domácnosti, tj. že hrnčíři v jednotlivých domech používali své vlastní složení keramického těsta a techniku stavby nádoby. Výzkum jsme rozšířili srovnáním postupů výroby keramiky s odchylkami ve výzdobě. Na základě syntézy výsledků různých studií, které naše výzkumná skupina uskutečnila dříve, předkládáme předběžnou analýzu propojující údaje o výzdobě a stavbě nádoby. Tento výzkum ukazuje možnou souvislost mezi atypickou výzdobou (např. exogenní nebo nestandardní LBK výzdoba) a způsoby tváření nádob, které byly označeny jako patrně exogenní. Tyto postřehy, které je teprve nutno statisticky ověřit na větším množství keramických souborů, poskytují nový vhled do složité sídelní dynamiky zemědělců LBK.
The article argues that the development of genetic technologies has to be critically evaluated from a socio-political economy perspective to establish if, on balance, the benefits of such technologies outweigh their costs and risks. The article illustrates how the current governance of these technoloiges can be seen as "undemocratic" because corporate interests dominate the direcitions in which the technologies are going. When aligned with the underlying socioeconomic power structures globally, these technologies create a situation where the development of science and technology fail to be about the common good. The article begins with a brief overview of neo-liberal globalization. It examines key global institutional arrangements including the World Bank, the Intermnational Monetary Fund, itnernational patenting laws and fee trade agreements. It is argued that in their convergence with the biosciences, these are antithetical to democracy, instead entrensching the interests of corporations, rich elites and rich countries. Finally, some suggestions for reforming the global political economy are presented. and Del Weston.
In the twentieth century, certain European elitist circles embraced Traditionalist thought, most notably promoted by its pioneer René Guénon (1886-1951). Ever since, a lose movement of like-minded people has handed down religiously-influenced theories opposing the modern world. Modern Traditionalists and modernity are thus fierce enemies. Any progress, modernization, or technological advances are to Traditionalists what regression, stagnation, and reactionary forces are to the avant-garde. So, what could be a possible link between Traditionalism and modern technology? Perhaps, the fundamental doubt of technology's belonging to the modern world. From the 1960s onwards, a self-proclaimed radical Traditionalist, who was further cherished as a New Age prophet, advocated ancient technology. True to the motto 'opposites attract,' the English writer John Michell (1933-2009) had reconciled many antagonisms. By linking astro-archaeology and various speculative earth mystery theories, Michell aimed to fuse prehistoric megalithic science and flying saucers. To Michell, the rejection of modernity and its by-products did not contradict the belief in extra-terrestrial means of prehistoric technology. The aim of this paper is the exposition of Michell's approach towards flying saucers as a technological means of prehistory from a modern Traditionalist and alternative archaeologist perspective.
