The effects of polyamines (PAs) on salt stress in Bakraii (Citrus reticulata × Citrus limetta) seedlings were studied. Foliar treatments by putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd), and spermine (Spm) (0, 0.5, and 1 mM) were applied during the salinity period
(0 and 75 mM of NaCl). PA-treated seedlings showed a lower content of Na+ and Cl- in leaves. Application of PAs increased net photosynthetic rate in salt-stressed plants and it contributed to the enhanced growth parameters. PAs application considerably induced growth improvement in Bakraii seedlings which was found to be associated with reduced electrolyte leakage, increased relative water content, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, activities of key antioxidant enzymes, as well as increased photosynthetic pigment concentration under saline regime. The growth response of Chlorella sorokiniana to certain irradiance, DO, and temperature demonstrated the possible causes of low productivity with this strain in outdoor cultures. The growth (biomass productivity) and chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) were substantially reduced when the dissolved oxygen (above 200 % of air saturation) and temperature were elevated. and C. U. Field experiments were conducted on four cultivars of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to examine the variability in cultivar response to sulphur dioxide (SO2) under different concentrations of mineral nutrients. Thirty-days-old plants were exposed for 8 weeks to 390±20 µg m-3 (0.15 ppm) SO2 for 4 h per day, 5 d per week. Decline in net photosynthetic rate, contents of pigments and nitrogen, biomass and grain yield of each cultivars were due to SO2 at all the nutrient concentrations studied. However, the magnitude of reduction was higher in plants grown without nutrient application. On the basis of the reductions in photosynthesis and yield, the susceptibility of wheat cultivars to SO2 was in the order of Malviya 213 > Malviya 37 > Malviya 206 > Malviya 234 at recommended dose of NPK, whereas the same without the nutrients was Malviya 206 > Malviya 234 > Malviya 213 > Malviya 37. and M. Bones were obtained from three fish species (brown trout Salmo trutta m. fario, grayling Thymallus thymallus and Carpathian sculpin Cottus poecilopus) for regression analysis. Bones used were chosen based upon frequency of occurrence in spraint samples and diagnostic value. Relationships between the length of diagnostic bones and fish length, fish length and weight, and standard length to total length, were assessed for the three fish species. Polynomial regression was deemed most suitable for the relationship between bone length and fish standard length, multiplicative between fish standard length and fish weight, and linear (brown trout) or polynomial (grayling and Carpathian sculpin) for standard length against total length. All calculated regressions were highly significant and displayed high coefficients of determination, ranging between 93.9 and 99.8 %. The uses of the bones examined, and the equations produced, are discussed in the light of their future use in estimating prey numbers, length and biomass in otter diet analysis.
Calamagrostis arundinacea L. (Roth.) and C. villosa (Chaix.) J.F. Gmel are two grass species substituting forest communities on deforested areas in Central Europe. They were exposed to enhanced ultraviolet-B (UV-B, λ = 290-320 nm) radiation during 22 weeks. A system of modulated lamps operating under field conditions was used to simulate a 25 % increase of incident UV-B radiation. CO2 assimilation seemed to be limited by a decrease of stomatal conductance (gs) in C. arundinacea, whereas carboxylation activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) was not affected. On the contrary, gs and RuBPCO activity decreased in C. villosa. These physiological adjustments resulted in growth changes; above-ground biomass decreased in C. villosa (prevailing negative effect) and significantly increased in C. arundinacea (prevailing positive effect) in response to enhanced UV-B radiation. and O. Contents of chlorophylls and carotenoids in yellow-green mutant Biao 810S were approximately half those in control type 810S. Biao 810S had fewer grana lamellae and looser structure than 810S, lower volume of starch granules in chloroplasts, but under high temperature and high irradiance the net photosynthetic rate (PN) of Biao 810S was higher than that of 810S. The chlorophyll fluorescence parameter Fv/Fm of Biao 810S was little higher and photochemical quenching qP was obviously higher than those of 810S. No significant differences in PN and biomass were observed in their hybrid combination. The yellow-green mutant phenotype may be a useful genetic marker of P(T)GMS rice used for hybrid seed production. and L.-J. Ou ... [et al.].
The effect of differing environmental conditions on competition for resources was investigated by a comparison of net photosynthetic rate (PN) and vegetative production of Indiangrass [Sorghastrum nutans (L.) Nash.] at two strip mine sites with differing reclamation histories, and a railroad prairie site where this species occurs naturally. The treatment for a competition experiment consisted of tying back all species of neighboring plants around a target plant, and measuring its PN and vegetative performance during the growing season. Environmental variables at each site were also measured during the growing season. Soil bulk density and pH were higher at the two mine sites than at the prairie site, and soil texture, nutrients, and water potential were different at each of the three sites. PN of target plants compared closely among the three sites, and were lowest for plants at the railroad prairie. The competition experiment indicated that lower canopy leaves were most affected by competition for photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) at all sites. Significant differences in PN of upper canopy leaves were found between treatment and control plants at one of the mine sites. This site had higher soil water potentials and higher soil levels of P and K than the other mine site or the railroad prairie. Target plants at the other mine site experienced a low competition for PAR, likely due to lower soil moisture availability and therefore lower aboveground productivity. The largest differences in PN and irradiances between upper and lower canopy leaves occurred in target plants with neighbors at the railroad prairie, likely due to inter-specific competition. Vegetative production of the target plants also reflected the environment at each site, but did not reflect PN differences between treatments. S. nutans is well adapted to the varying environment at these three sites, and aboveground competition for radiant energy was probably not as limiting for this C4 grass as belowground competition. and V. Water stress is a major abiotic constraint leading to serious crop losses. Recently, in the Mediterranean region, water stress has become markedly sensed, especially in Citrus orchards. This study investigated the physiological responses of local sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) clones to severe water stress. Water stress was applied by withholding irrigation during weeks, followed by a rewatering phase during three months. Under water stress, sour orange clones decreased their stomatal conductance, net photosynthetic rate, and transpiration rate. On the contrary, biomass was stable, especially in the Kliaa clone. In addition, reduced leaf water potentials (-3 MPa) and water contents were measured in most of the clones, except Kliaa which kept the highest water potential (-2.5 MPa). After rewatering, all clones recovered except of the Ghars Mrad (GM) clone. Ultrastructural observations of leaf sections by transmission electron microscopy did not reveal marked alterations in the mesophyll cells and chloroplast structure of Kliaa in comparison to the sensitive clone GM, in which palisade parenchyma cells and chloroplasts were disorganized. This contrasting behavior was mainly attributed to genetic differences as attested by molecular analysis. This study highlighted GM as the drought-sensitive clone and Kliaa as the tolerant clone able to develop an avoidance strategy based on an efficient stomatal regulation. Although a high percentage of polyembryony characterizes C. aurantium and justifies its multiplication by seeds, heterogeneous water-stress responses could be observed within sour orange plants in young orchards., A. This study aimed to determine the effects of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria Bacillus subtilis JS on the growth and physiological changes of Populus euramericana and Populus deltoides x P. nigra. Poplar seedlings were treated with B. subtilis JS and their growth was monitored for up to 120 d. Three different types of treatments [control, B1 (B. subtilis:double-distilled water, 1:100, v/v), and B2 (1:50)] were established. B. subtilis JS enhanced seedling height by 62% and total biomass by 37% after 120 d. Physiologically, the photosynthetic rate increased by 54%, and the total chlorophyll (Chl) content, foliage nitrogen and phosphate content were significantly higher after treatment with B2 than that of the control. These results suggest that the total Chl content is directly related to not only the photosynthetic capacity of the foliage but also to the nitrogen content, indicating that the strain JS may promote the growth of poplar., J. The replacement of fossil fuels with renewable sources for heating and drying of cereals nowadays generates a great deal of debate. The greatest representation in renewable fuel sources has biomass, particularly woodchips and straw. This paper presents the results of check measurement on a heat source for heating and warn water preparation. Selected dependences of production of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, content of oxygen, of total organic carbon are presented. This knowledge implies requirements to abandon the idea of ecological harmlessness of heat production from biomass.
