Salicylic acid (SA) and polyamines (PA) are widely used to overcome various abiotic stresses including salt (NaCl) stress in plants. In the present investigation, co-application efficacies of SA and PA on the salt stress (200 mM NaCl) were evaluated in Lycopersicon esculentum. After transplantation, at 10-d stage, seedlings were exposed to NaCl through soil and then allowed to grow till 30-d stage. At 31-d stage of growth, plants were sprayed with double distilled water (control) or spermidine (1.0 mM) and/or SA (10-5 M). The salt stress significantly reduced the growth, gas-exchange parameters, but increased antioxidant enzymes and proline content in the leaves. Chlorophyll (Chl) α fluorescence induction (transient), measured by exposing dark-adapted samples to high light, shows a polyphasic rise, which has been the subject of extensive research over several decades. Several Chl fluorescence parameters based on this transient have been defined, the most widely used being the FV [= (FM-F0)]/FM ratio as a proxy for the maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry. However, considerable additional information may be derived from analysis of the shape of the fluorescence transient. In fact, several performance indices (PIs) have been defined, which are suggested to provide information on the structure and function of PSII, as well as on the efficiencies of specific electron transport reactions in the thylakoid membrane. Further, these PIs have been proposed to quantify plant tolerance to stress, such as by high light, drought, high (or low) temperature, or N-deficiency. This is an interesting idea, since the speed of the Chl α fluorescence transient measurement (<1 s) is very suitable for high-throughput phenotyping. In this review, we describe how PIs have been used in the assessment of photosynthetic tolerance to various abiotic stress factors. We synthesize these findings and draw conclusions on the suitability of several PIs in assessing stress responses. Finally, we highlight an alternative method to extract information from fluorescence transients, the Integrated Biomarker Response. This method has been developed to define multi-parametric indices in other scientific fields (e.g., ecology), and may be used to combine Chl α fluorescence data with other proxies characterizing CO2 assimilation, or even growth or grain yield, allowing a more holistic assessment of plant performance., A. Drought stress is one of the main environmental factors limiting plant growth and productivity of many crops. Elevated carbon dioxide concentration (eCO2) can ameliorate, mitigate, or compensate for the negative impact of drought on plant growth and enable plants to remain turgid and functional for a longer period. In order to investigate the combined effects of eCO2 and drought stress on photosynthetic performance and leaf structures, we analyzed photosynthetic characteristics and structure and ultrastructure of cucumber leaves. The decline in net photosynthetic rate under moderate drought stress occurred due to stomatal limitation alone, while under severe drought stress, it was the result of stomatal and nonstomatal limitations. Conversely, eCO2 improved photosynthetic performance under moderate drought stress, increased the lengths of the palisade cells and the number of chloroplasts per palisade cell under severe drought stress, and significantly increased the grana thickness under moderate drought stress. Additionally, eCO2 significantly decreased stomatal density, stomatal widths and stomatal aperture on the abaxial surface of leaves under moderate drought stress. Melatonin has different functions in plant growth and development, especially in the protection of plants suffering from various forms of abiotic stress. We explored the effect of melatonin priming on photosynthetic activity of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) leaves. Our results showed that 100 µM is the optimal concentration used for alleviation of the damage to photosynthetic apparatus. Melatonin priming both in the form of leaf spray and direct root application was found to reduce the damage to photosynthetic apparatus, and increase the electron transfer rate and quantum yield of PSI and PSII photochemistry, to protect the thylakoid membrane from damage caused by low-temperature stress. The effects of polyamines (PAs) on salt stress in Bakraii (Citrus reticulata × Citrus limetta) seedlings were studied. Foliar treatments by putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd), and spermine (Spm) (0, 0.5, and 1 mM) were applied during the salinity period
(0 and 75 mM of NaCl). PA-treated seedlings showed a lower content of Na+ and Cl- in leaves. Application of PAs increased net photosynthetic rate in salt-stressed plants and it contributed to the enhanced growth parameters. PAs application considerably induced growth improvement in Bakraii seedlings which was found to be associated with reduced electrolyte leakage, increased relative water content, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, activities of key antioxidant enzymes, as well as increased photosynthetic pigment concentration under saline regime. Atmospheric CO2 concentration continues to rise and is predicted to reach approximately 700 ppm by 2100. Some predictions suggest that the dry season in West Africa could be extended with climate change. This study examined the effects of elevated CO2 concentration and water deficit on growth and photosynthesis of juvenile cacao. Light-saturated photosynthesis (Pmax), quantum efficiency, and intrinsic water-use efficiency increased significantly in response to elevated CO2, as did a range of growth and development responses (e.g. leaf area and leaf number), but the magnitude of the increase was dependent on the water treatment. Stomatal index was significantly greater in the elevated CO2 treatment; an atypical response which may be a reflection of the environment in which cacao evolved.
