Functioning of plant-aphid-natural enemy interactions may be associated with the structure and composition of withinfield vegetation, neighborhood fields and field borders, and the regional plant community of cropped and noncropped areas. Farmand region-scale vegetation in the wheat-growing area of the North American Great Plains was hypothesized to effect the abundance of two hymenopteran parasitoids, that differ in physiological and behavioral attributes, of the key pest aphid of wheat, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko). The parasitoids had greater sensitivity to farm-scale vegetation (wheat strip rotation with or without spring-sown sunflower) than region-scale vegetation (degree of diversification with other crops and wheat fields converted to conservation grasslands). A two-way factorial design of scale (farm- and region-scale) revealed that parasitoid abundance in grass-dominant (homogeneous) areas especially benefited from adding sunflower to the wheat-fallow strip crop rotation. Considerable sensitivity of the analysis was added when adjusting for seasonality of vegetation, revealing that the region-scale effects were most prominent late season. From a management viewpoint, adding sunflower into the wheat production system, especially in relatively homogeneous vegetation regions, tends to promote local parasitoid populations during the summer when spring-sown plants are maturing and wheat is not in cultivation. Contrasting results for A. albipodus and L. testaceipes were consistent with expectations based on behavioral and physiological attributes of the two aphid parasitoid families they represent. Still, the general management interpretation seems robust for the two parasitoids and has relevance to both farm- and region-scale management schemes that are occurring in the wheat production zone of North American Great Plains.
The seeds of soybean cv. Aldana and spring wheat cv. Torka were soaked for 24 h in solution of zearalenone [ZEN, 2,4-dihydroxy-6-(10-hydroxy-6-oxo-trans-1-undecenyl)-benzonic acid lactone, 4 mg dm-3] and then they were sown in the pot experiment in an open vegetation hall. The after-effects of ZEN on growth of plants, net photosynthetic (PN) and transpiration (E) rates, stomatal conductance (gs), photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) and on final seeds yield, were determined. A significant increase of seeds yield was revealed in plants of both cultivars i.e. by 22% and 19% of seed (grain) number and by 28 and 24% of seed (grain) mass, in soybean and in wheat, respectively. The photosynthetic rate (PN) was stimulated during the juvenile and final phase by about 13.6% (average) in soybean plants. During other developmental stages, assimilation of CO2 was retarded. The response of CO2 assimilation in wheat plants was less pronounced as compared to that in soybean, but an increase of PN by over 24% near the final stage of development was observed. The quantum yield of PSII electron transport (ΦPSII) in soybean plants was changed after the treatment of seeds by ZEN similarly as for the rate of CO2, whereas in wheat it continued to gradually increase i.e. during the whole growth period. Changes of ΦPSII both in soybean and in wheat plants, as the response to ZEN treatment, were accompanied with an increase in the efficiency of changes occurring within the antenna (Fv'/Fm') as well as within centres of photochemical reactions (qp). The conclusion is that ZEN can affect plant growth and development in many ways, as well as in the status and functioning of the photosynthetical apparatus. Some of the effects can be very longlasting, as e.g. stimulation of production of seed yield in response to treatment of seeds with this substance. and J. Kościelniak ... [et al.].
Chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence is a subtle reflection of primary reactions of photosynthesis. Intricate relationships between fluorescence kinetics and photosynthesis help our understanding of photosynthetic biophysical processes. Chl fluorescence technique is useful as a non-invasive tool in eco-physiological studies, and has extensively been used in assessing plant responses to environmental stress. The review gives a summary of some Chl fluorescence parameters currently used in studies of stress physiology of selected cereal crops, namely water stress, heat stress, salt stress, and chilling stress.
The pericarp of cereal crops is considered a photosynthetically active tissue. Although extensive studies have been performed on green leaves, the photosynthetic role of the pericarp in cereal caryopsis development has not been well investigated. In the present study, we investigated the anatomy, ultrastructure, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, and oxygen evolution of the pericarp during caryopsis ontogenesis in field wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The results showed that wheat pericarp cross-cells contained Chl; the grana stacks and thylakoid membranes in the cross-cells were more distinct in the pericarp than those in the flag leaves as shown by transmission electron microscopy. Chl fluorescence revealed that the photosynthetic efficiency, which was indicated by values of maximum efficiency of PSII photochemistry and effective PSII quantum yield, was lower in the pericarp compared to that of the flag leaf eight days after anthesis (DAA), whereas similar values were subsequently observed. The nonphotochemical quenching values were lower from 8-16 DAA but significantly increased in the pericarp from 24-32 DAA compared to the flag leaf. The oxygen evolution rate of the flag leaves was consistently higher than that of pericarp; notably, isolated pericarps released more oxygen than intact pericarps during caryopsis development. These results suggest that the pericarp plays a key role in caryopsis development by performing photosynthesis as well as by supplying oxygen to the endosperm and dissipating excessive energy during the

We studied the developmental changes in photosynthetic and respiration rates and thermal dissipation processes connected with chloroplasts and mitochondria activity in etiolated wheat (Triticum aestivum L., var. Irgina) seedlings during the greening process. Etioplasts gradually developed into mature chloroplasts under continuous light [190 μmol(photon) m-2 s-1] for 48 h in 5-day-dark-grown seedlings. The net photosynthetic rate of irradiated leaves became positive after 6 h of illumination and increased further. The first two hours of de-etiolation were characterized by low values of maximum (Fv/Fm) and actual photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) and by a coefficient of photochemical quenching in leaves. Fv/Fm reached 0.8 by the end of 24 h-light period. During greening, energy-dependent component of nonphotochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence, violaxanthin cycle (VXC) operation, and lipoperoxidation activity changed in a similar way. Values of these parameters were the highest at the later phase of de-etiolation (4-12 h of illumination). The respiration rate increased significantly after 2 h of greening and it was the highest after 4-6 h of illumination. It was caused by an increase in alternative respiration (AP) capacity. The strong, positive linear correlation was revealed between AP capacity and heat production in greening tissues. These results indicated that VXC in chloroplasts and AP in mitochondria were intensified as energy-dissipating systems at the later stage of greening (after 4 h), when most of prolamellar bodies converted into thylakoids, and they showed the greatest activity until the photosynthetic machinery was almost completely developed. and E. In eukaryotic oxygenic photosynthetic organisms (both plants and algae), the maximum fluorescence is at peak P, with peak M lying much lower, or being even absent. Thus, the PSMT phase, where S is semisteady state, and T is terminal state, is replaced by a monotonous P→T fluorescence decay. In the present study, we found that dimethoate-treated wheat plant leaves showed SM transient, whereas in the case of control plants monotonous P→T fluorescence decay occured. We suggest that this was partly due to quenching of fluorescence due to [H+], responsible for P to S (T) decay in control plants (Briantais et al. 1979) being replaced by state transition (state 2 to state 1) in dimethoate-treated plants (Kaňa et al. 2012)., J. The aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi was collected and subsequently reared on Sitobion avenae on wheat or Acyrthosiphon pisum on alfalfa. Parasitoids from both origins were exposed in an olfactometer to alfalfa or wheat volatiles after plant experience (wheat or alfalfa) or after oviposition experience (S. avenae on wheat or A. pisum on alfalfa). The results showed the importance of adult experience, conditioning and innate preferences on the responses of A. ervi toward volatiles and provided a mechanistic explanation to the high prevalence of A. ervi on aphids on cereals and legumes in central Chile.
In order to study the mechanisms of Se-mediated growth improvement as related to carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) metabolism, wheat plants were cultivated hydroponically with adequate (4 mM, Na) or low (1 mM, Nd) N supply and treated with 10 and 50 μM Na2SeO4 for six weeks. The Se supplementation enhanced plant biomass; it was significant for shoots of Na plants at 50 μM Se. Chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were significantly lowered under Nd conditions but restored completely by Se addition reaching values of those in Na plants. Net CO2 assimilation rate (PN) decreased only slightly by limited N availability, but it enhanced significantly in both Nd and Na plants equally by 10 and 50 μM Se. Effect of Se on PN in the Na plants occurred mainly due to the stomata opening, while it was related to both stomatal and nonstomatal mechanisms in the Nd plants. The Se treatment resulted in enhancement of nitrate reductase (NR) activity in both Na and Nd plants with an optimal response at 10 μM Se. Negative correlations between nitrate concentration and NR activity indicated a partial nitrate depletion in the roots following by elevated NR activity in Nd plants. In contrast, nitrite concentrations were higher in the Se treated plants. Higher amino acids and protein concentrations in the Se-treated plants might be an indication of a general upregulation of N metabolism. However, in Na plants, the stimulation of N metabolism was not observed at 50 μM Se which could not be attributed to lesser availability of C skeletons because of maintaning higher CO2 fixation under these conditions. It implies the function of some regulatory mechanisms that are responsible for coordination of C and N metabolism in whole plant., R. Hajiboland, N. Sadeghzade., and Obsahuje bibliografii
The current concentrations of O3 have been shown to cause significant negative effects on crop yield. The present levels of ozone may not induce visible symptoms in most of plants, but can result in substantial losses in reproductive output. This paper considers the impact of ambient O3 on gas exchange, photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence and carbohydrate levels in the flag leaf of wheat plants during various stages of reproductive development using open-top chambers. Mean O3 concentration was 45.7 ppb during wheat growth and 50.2 ppb after flag leaf development. Reproductive stage showed higher exceedence of O3 above 40 ppb compared to the vegetative stage. Diurnal variations in net photosynthetic rate (PN) and stomatal conductance (gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), Fv/Fm ratio, photosynthetic pigments, soluble sugars, and starch were measured at 10, 30, and 50 days after flag leaf expansion (DAFE). The results showed reductions in PN, gs, Fv/Fm ratio, photosynthetic pigments and starch, and increases in Ci, F0, and soluble sugars in nonfiltered chambers (NFCs) compared to filtered chambers (FCs). Maximum changes in measured parameters were observed at 50 DAFE (i.e. grain filling and setting phase). Diurnal variation in PN showed double peaked curve in both FCs and NFCs, but delayed peak and early depression in NFCs. Stomatal conductance was significantly lower in NFCs. The study suggests that higher prevalence of ambient O3 during reproductive development led to significant alteration in physiological vitality of wheat having potential negative influence on yield. and R.
