The aim of the article is to develop the dialectics and potential of a specific philosophical approach to the problem of epistemological scepticism: Wittgenstein’s ideas about the function of fundamental certainties in our epistemic practices. I begin with an excursion into the problematic of sceptical arguments and explain G. E. Moore’s anti-sceptical strategy, which influenced Wittgenstein’s thoughts in On Certainty. I then offer a reconstruction of the Wittgensteinian approach that I favour. On this basis I argue that although there is a grain of truth in scepticism, the idea of an indefinitely-iterated doubt and request for reasons (driving the Pyrrhonian-style of scepticism), as well as the idea of a hyperbolic doubt (driving Cartesian-style scepticism), are philosophical illusions from the perspective of the rules and standards of our epistemic operating - the would-be sceptic offers us no compelling alternative., Ladislav Koreň., and Obsahuje poznámky a bibliografii

Cieľom štúdie je vysvetliť motiváciu a podstatu filozofických koncepcií, podľa ktorých je tvrdenie normatívny fenomén. Začnem tým, že zmapujem kľúčové myšlienky k problematike tvrdenia, a lokalizujem typické normatívne prístupy. Potom rozoberiem, čo vlastne znamená povedať, že tvrdenie je normatívnym fenoménom špecifického druhu, a predložím špekulatívno-hypotetickú rekonštrukciu genézy tvrdiacej jazykovej hry - presnejšie, jej protoformy - ktorá by mala vyzdvihnúť jej charakteristické sociálno-normatívne aspekty. Na tomto základe postavím kritické porovnanie dvoch reprezentatívnych normatívnych prístupov k tvrdeniu: pragmatického inferencializmu Roberta Brandoma a Knowledge Account of Assertion Timothyho Williamsona. Budem argumentovať, že Brandomov prístup adekvátnejšie vystihuje sociálnu povahu tvrdenia, esenciálnu pre túto rečovú hru., My aim in this study is to explain both motivation and main ideas of those philosophical accounts of assertion that take it to be a normative phenomenon. I first draw a map of key ideas pertaining to the problem and localize on it typical normative accounts. Then I take up the issue of what it means to say that assertion is a normative phenomenon, putting forward a speculative-hypothetical reconstruction of the genesis of the assertoric game - or, rather, its protoform - to bring to the fore social-normative aspects characteristic of it. This will provide the basis for a critical comparison of two representative normative approaches to assertion: pragmatic inferentialism of Robert Brandom, and Knowledge Account of Assertion of Timothy Williamson. I shall argue that Brandom's normative approach to assertion is superior, as it much better accounts for a social dimension of assertion that is essential to this language game., and Ladislav Koreň.

6. Quantificational accounts of logical consequence I: from Aristotle to Bolzano

So-called quantificational accounts explicate logical consequence or validity as truth-preservation in all cases, cases being construed as admissible substitutional variants or as admissible interpretations with respect to non-logical terms. In the present study, which is the first from three successive studies devoted to quantification accounts, I focus on the beginning of systematic theorizing of consequence in Aristotle‘s work, which contains the rudiments of both modal and formal accounts of consequence. I argue, inter alia, that there is no evidence for the claim that Aristotle propounded a quantificational account, and that for a full-fledged quantificational approach in a modern style we need to turn to Bolzano’s substitutional approach, whose motivation, structure and problems are explained in the second part of this study., Takzvané kvantifikační účty vysvětlují logický důsledek nebo platnost jako zachování pravdy ve všech případech, případy jsou vykládány jako přípustné substituční varianty nebo jako přípustné interpretace s ohledem na nelogické pojmy. V této studii, která je první ze tří po sobě jdoucích studií věnovaných kvantifikačním účtům, se zaměřuji na začátek systematické teorizace důsledků v Aristotelově díle, která obsahuje základy modálních i formálních popisů důsledků. Mimo jiné tvrdím, že neexistuje žádný důkaz pro tvrzení, že Aristotelés navrhl kvantifikační účet, a že pro plnohodnotný kvantifikační přístup v moderním stylu se musíme obrátit k Bolzanovu substitučnímu přístupu, jehož motivace, struktura a problémy jsou vysvětleno ve druhé části této studie., and Ladislav Koreň

In this second of my three connected studies devoted to the quantificational tradition I set out to reconstruct the seminal contributions of Russell, Carnap, Tarski and Quine and evaluate them vis-à-vis some of the most pressing objections. This study also prepares the ground for my discussion of the standard model-theoretic account of consequence to be found in the concluding study., Kvantifikační popisy logických důsledků z toho vyplývají z hlediska zachování pravdy ve všech případech - ať už jde o přípustné substituční varianty nebo interpretace s ohledem na nelogické pojmy. V této druhé ze svých třech propojených studií věnovaných kvantifikační tradici jsem se rozhodl rekonstruovat klíčové příspěvky Russella, Carnapa, Tarskiho a Quina a hodnotit je ve vztahu k některým z nejnaléhavějších námitek. This concluding study devoted to quantificational accounts of consequence and related logical properties deals with the model-theoretic account (MTA). In response to objections questioning its intuitive adequacy, it is argued that MTA does not aim to analyse ''the'' alleged intuitive notion of consequence, but aims to formally reconstruct one specific semantic account, according to which valid arguments preserve truth in virtue of their logico-semantic structure and irrespectively of particular semantic values of the non-logical vocabulary. So conceived, MTA is arguably superior to any other quantificational account, being based on a principled account of the semantic structure and the specific contribution of logical elements to it., Tato závěrečná studie věnovaná kvantifikačním účtům důsledků a souvisejících logických vlastností se zabývá modelovým teoretickým popisem (MTA). V odezvě na námitky zpochybňující jeho intuitivní přiměřenost se tvrdí, že MTA nemá za cíl analyzovat ,,údajný'' intuitivní pojem důsledků, ale má za cíl formálně rekonstruovat jeden specifický sémantický účet, podle kterého platné argumenty zachovávají pravdu na základě svého logika. -semantická struktura a bez ohledu na jednotlivé sémantické hodnoty nelogické slovní zásoby. 9. Underdetermination, scepticism and realism

This study aims to articulate and compare the structure, presuppositions and implications of two paradigmatic sceptical arguments, i.e. arguments from underdetermination of scientific theories by observational data (UA) and Cartesian-style arguments (CA) invoking sceptical scenarios of severe cognitive dislocation. Although salient analogies between them may prompt one to think that a unified diagnosis of what is amiss with them is called for, it will be argued that this may be a false hope, if those analogies do not underwrite a complete homology. That said, possible parallels of one promising anti-sceptical exposure of CA are pointed out for the case of UA, which conspire together to render the problem of underdetermination less threatening than it could at first appear., Tato studie si klade za cíl artikulovat a porovnávat strukturu, předpoklady a implikace dvou paradigmatických skeptických argumentů, tj. Argumentů z podceňování vědeckých teorií pozorovacími daty ( UA ) a argumenty kartézského stylu ( CA ), které vyvolávají skeptické scénáře těžké kognitivní dislokace. Ačkoli výrazné analogie mezi nimi mohou vést k tomu, aby si někdo myslel, že je požadována jednotná diagnóza toho, co je s nimi v rozporu, bude to argumentovat, že to může být falešná naděje, pokud tyto analogie nepodléhají úplné homologii.
