This article analyses anti-obesity discourse in post-war Czechoslovakia, particularly in the country’s late socialist period. The article conceives of the discourse on obesity as a tool of biopolitical, rather than totalitarian, power, examining the ways expert knowledge, power, and morality worked together to produce a socialist subject. On the first level, it analyses the expert anti-obesity discourse as an example of the expertisation of public discourse in socialist Czechoslovakia. Second, it shows the construction of obesity in contrast to bodily ability, and the stigmatisation of the ‘fat’ body. On the last level, the article focuses on the gendered aspects of the discourse and demonstrates the ways in which the anti-obesity campaign supported the heteronormative framework of late socialism. By examining expert and media discourses, the article argues that the campaign against obesity served as a means to construct a proper socialist body and induce a moral panic about the state of socialism.
Adiposis is reputed as a twin disease of type 2 diabetes and
greatly harmful to human health. In order to understand the
molecular mechanisms of adiposis, the changes of physiological,
pathological, epigenetic and correlative gene expression were
investigated during the adiposis development of C57BL/6J mice
induced by long time (9 months) high-fat and high-sucrose diet
(HFSD) sustainably. The results showed that mRNA transcription
level of the Leptin, Glut4 and Glut2 genes have been obviously
changed, which exhibit a negative correlation with methylation
on their promoter DNA. The results also revealed that HFSD
induced higher level of DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) in fat
tissue might play important role in regulating the changes of
methylation pattern on Glut4 and Leptin genes, and which might
be one of the molecular mechanisms for the adiposis
development.
Genes for adiponectin and resistin are candidate genes of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of our study was to determine the frequency of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) 45T>G and 276G>T of the adiponectin gene and 62G>A and -180C>G of the resistin gene in patients with obesity (OB), anorexia nervosa (AN) and in control healthy normal-weight women (NW) and to study the influence of particular genotypes on serum concentrations of these hormones and on insulin sensitivity. Serum adiponectin, resistin, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), insulin, cholesterol, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and blood glucose levels were measured in 77 patients with OB, 28 with AN and 38 NW. DNA analysis was carried out by polymerase chain reaction with restriction analysis of PCR product. The presence of SNP ADP+276 G>T allele was accompanied by higher cholesterol levels in AN patients, higher adiponectin concentrations in OB patients and lower HbA1c levels in NW. SNP of the resistin gene 62G>A was associated with lower HbA1c in NW and higher cholesterol concentrations in OB group. The carriers of the minor G allele in the position -180 of the resistin gene within AN group had significantly higher BMI relative to non-carriers. Adiponectin is an adipokine increasing glucose and fatty acid metabolism and improving insulin sensitivity. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of adiponectin in the regulation of adipocyte lipolysis. Human adipocytes isolated from biopsies obtained during surgical operations from 16 non-obese and 17 obese subjects were incubated with 1) human adiponectin (20 μg/ml) or 2) 0.5 mM AICAR - activator of AMPK (adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase). Following these incubations, isoprenaline was added (10-6 M) to investigate the influence of adiponectin and AICAR on catecholamine-induced lipolysis. Glycerol concentration was measured as lipolysis marker. We observed that adiponectin suppressed spontaneous lipolysis by 21 % and isoprenaline-induced lipolysis by 14 % in non-obese subjects. These effects were not detectable in obese individuals, but statistically significant differences in the effect of adiponectin between ob ese and non-obese were not revealed by two way ANOVA test. The inhibitory effect of AICAR and adiponectin on lipolysis was reversed by Compound C. Our results suggest, that adiponectin in physiological concentrations inhibits spontaneous as well as catecholamine-induced lipolysis. Vzestup obezity v posledních letech vedl k řadě studií, které se zabývaly vztahy mezi tělesnou hmotností v dětství a dosaženým vzděláním, výší příjmu a jinými socioekonomickými aspekty v dospělosti. Příspěvek navazuje na výzkumy, které byly zaměřeny především na akademickou úspěšnost dětí a dospívajících s nadváhou a obezitou. Tyto výzkumy usilovaly o socioekonomickou, psychosociální a zdravotní analýzu příčin a důsledků školního prospěchu u této části populace. Cílem příspěvku je porovnání a shrnutí výstupů z těchto studií. Úvodní část přináší informace o aktuálním výskytu nadměrné tělesné hmotnosti u dětské i dospělé populace ve světě a v naší zemi. Epidemie nadváhy a obezity a její posun do nižšího věku je spojován s větším ohrožením zdraví a s přidruženými vývojovými komplikacemi u současné i u budoucích generací: z uvedených důvodů nejde o okrajové téma. Akademickou úspěšnost dětí a dospívajících s nadváhou a obezitou nelze zkoumat bez znalostí faktorů, které jsou pro rozvoj dětské nadměrné hmotnosti významné. Poznatky o časté a výsledné podobě socioekonomických a vzdělanostních výsledků u populace s nadváhou a obezitou v dospělém věku jsou samy o sobě vysvětlením toho, z jakých důvodů je nutné se zabývat výsledky podobně zaměřených výzkumů z předcházejících vývojových období. Závěrečné shrnutí je doplněno o náměty, jichž by bylo vhodné využít v tematicky navazujících studiích. and The rise of obesity in recent years has led to a number of studies about relationship between weight in childhood and the reached level of education, income and other socio-economic aspects in adulthood. This article follows previous researches which were focused mostly on the academic success of children and adolescents with overweight and obesity. These researches aimed for the socio-economic, psychosocial and health analysis of causes and consequences of school success rate within this part of population. The aim of this article is to compare and summarize the outputs of these studies.
The introductory part brings information about current occurrence of overweight in children and adults population in the world and in our country. The epidemic of overweight and obesity and its movement to a lower age is connected with greater risks for health and associated developmental complications for current and future generations, therefore this is not a marginal issue.
The academic success of children and adolescents with overweight and obesity cannot be studied without the knowledge of factors, which are significant for the development of children obesity. Findings about common and final form of socioeconomic and educational results within the population with overweight and obesity are themselves the explanation of why it is important to address the outputs of similarly focused researches form previous developmental periods. The final summary is supplemented by suggested topics, which should be used in thematically following studies.
In the present work neonatal male and female Wistar rats were treated intraperitoneally with monosodium glutamate (MSG 2 mg/kg b.w.) or saline (controls) daily for 4 day after birth. At the age of 30 and 80 days, the alkaline phosphatase activity (AP) in the brush border of individual enterocytes, the body fat content and Lee´s index of obesity were analyzed. Microdensitometrical quantification of AP was significantly increased on day 30 in males (P<0.01) and on day 80 in MSG-treated male and female rats (P<0.001) as compared to the controls. MSG administration also increased the body fat weight and the obesity index significantly (P<0.001) in 80-day-old animals, but was without any significant effect on their food intake. Our results showed that a) neonatal MSG-treatment may significantly change the intestinal function and b) the investigation of the intestinal enzyme activities may be important in further studies on MSG-induced and other forms of obesity., Š. CD163 is a marker of macrophages with anti-inflammatory properties and its soluble form (sCD163) is considered a prognostic predictor of several diseases including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We explored sCD163 levels at baseline and after very low-calorie diet (VLCD) or bariatric surgery in 32 patients with obesity (20 undergoing VLCD and 12 bariatric surgery), 32 obese patients with T2DM (22 undergoing VLCD and 10 bariatric surgery), and 19 control subjects. We also assessed the changes of CD163 positive cells of monocyte-macrophage lineage in peripheral blood and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) in subset of patients. Plasma sCD163 levels were increased in obese and T2DM subjects relative to control subjects (467.2±40.2 and 513.8±37.0 vs. 334.4±24.8 ng/ml, p=0.001) and decreased after both interventions. Obesity decreased percentage of CD163+CD14+ monocytes in peripheral blood compared to controls (78.9±1.48 vs. 86.2±1.31 %, p=0.003) and bariatric surgery decreased CD163+CD14+HLA-DR+ macrophages in SAT (19.4±2.32 vs. 11.3±0.90 %, p=0.004). Our data suggest that increased basal sCD163 levels are related to obesity and its metabolic complications. Long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC n-3 PUFA) exert beneficial effects on health and they could help to prevent development of obesity and associated metabolic disorders. In our previous studies in mice fed high-fat (cHF; ~60 % calories as fat) diet and maintained at 20 °C, dietary LC n-3 PUFA could counteract accretion of body fat, without inducing mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in adipose tissue, suggesting that the anti-obesity effect was not linked to adaptive (UCP1- mediated) thermogenesis. To exclude a possible dependence of the anti-obesity effect on any mechanism inducible by cold, experiments were repeated in mice maintained at thermoneutrality (30 °C). Male C57BL/6J mice were fed either cHF diet, or cHF diet supplemented with LC n-3 PUFA, or standard diet for 7 months. Similarly as at 20 °C, the LC n-3 PUFA supplementation reduced accumulation of body fat, preserved lipid and glucose homeostasis, and induced fatty acid re-esterification in epididymal white adipose tissue. Food consumption was not affected by LC n-3 PUFA intake. Our results demonstrated anti-obesity metabolic effect of LC n-3 PUFA, independent of cold-induced thermogenesis and they suggested that induction of fatty acid re-esterification creating a substrate cycle in white fat, which results in energy expenditure, could contribute to the anti-obesity effect., P. Some studies have suggested that there could be an association between the duration of sleep in humans and development of the obesity. We have analyzed the group of the probands (n = 3970, 2038 males and 1932 females, aged 18-65 years), with permanent address in the Central or South Bohemia. We ascertained the relationship between the duration of their sleep (obtained per questionnaire) and body mass index, weight, height, the value of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, waist and hip circumference, the values of total-, high density- and low density- cholesterol, thyroid hormone and body exercise performed. The optimal values of the body mass index (and optimal body weight) were associated with the duration of sleep 7 hours per night (P < 0.001). Both, common gene variants and human adenovirus 36 (Adv36) are involved in the pathogenesis of obesity. The potential relationship between these two pathogenic factors has not yet been investigated. The aim of our study was to examine the association of obesity susceptibility loci with Adv36 status. Genotyping of ten gene variants (in/near TMEM18, SH2B1, KCTD15, PCSK1, BDNF, SEC16B, MC4R, FTO) and analysis of Adv36 antibodies was performed in 1,027 Czech adolescents aged 13.0-17.9 years. Variants of two genes (PCSK1 and BDNF) were associated with Adv36 seropositivity. A higher prevalence of Adv36 antibody positivity was observed in obesity risk allele carriers of PCSK1 rs6232, rs6235 and BDNF rs4923461 vs. noncarriers (χ2=6.59, p=0.010; χ2=7.56, p=0.023 and χ2=6.84, p=0.033, respectively). The increased risk of Adv36 positivity was also found in PCSK1 variants: rs6232 (OR=1.67, 95 % CI 1.11-2.49, p=0.016) and rs6235 (OR=1.34, 95 % CI 1.08-1.67, p=0.010). PCSK1 rs6232 and BDNF rs925946 variants were closely associated with Adv36 status in boys and girls, respectively (χ2=5.09, p=0.024; χ2=7.29, p=0.026). Furthermore, PCSK1 rs6235 risk allele was related to Adv36 seropositivity (χ2=6.85, p=0.033) in overweight/obese subgroup.
