We investigated net photosynthetic rate (PN) of ear and two uppermost (flag and penultimate) leaves of wheat cultivars Hongmangmai (drought resistant) and Haruhikari (drought sensitive) during post-anthesis under irrigated and non-irrigated field conditions. The PN of ear and flag leaf were significantly higher and less affected by drought in Hongmangmai than in Haruhikari. The rate of reduction in stomatal conductance (gs) was similar for the two cultivars, but intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) in the flag leaf of Hongmangmai was lower than that of Haruhikari in non-irrigated treatment. No differences were observed in leaf water potential (ψ1) and osmotic adjustment of the flag leaf of the cultivars. These results imply that differences in photosynthetic inhibition on the flag leaf at low leaf ψ1 between the cultivars were primarily due to non-stomatal effects. Hence the main physiological factor associated with yield stability of Hongmangmai under drought stress may be attributed to the capacity for chloroplast activity in the flag leaf, which apparently allows sustained PN of flag leaf during grain filling under drought stress. The higher PN of ear in Hongmangmai under drought could also be related to its drought resistance. and T. Inoue ... [et al.].
In a greenhouse experiment, the influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Glomus mosseae and Glomus intraradices) and water stress [100% field capacity (FC), 75% FC, 50% FC and 25% FC] on maximal quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry (Fv/Fm) and some other ecophysiological characteristics of two pistachio cultivar (Pistacia vera cv.
Badami-Riz-Zarand and Pistacia vera cv. Qazvini) were investigated.
No difference was found in colonization rate between the two arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) applied. Water stress reduced the mycorrhizal colonization in both cultivars at the same rate but the difference was significant just with severe water stress level (25% FC). The Fv/Fm was also adversely affected by water stress from 75% FC downwards in Qazvini cultivar while in Badami, increase in water-stress intensity had no significant effect on this parameter. Gasexchange parameters were decreased with increasing stress intensity and chlorophyll (Chl) pigments were increased with mild water stress (75% FC) compared with control (100% FC) and then decreased with increasing stress intensity. The carotenoids (Car) content increased significantly in the stressed leaves in all water-stress levels irrespective of AMF treatment and cultivar type.
The adverse effects of water stress were significantly reduced by AM inoculation and in the most of measured parameters, both AMF had an equal influence except with the intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), where G. intraradices was superior. Results obtained from Chl fluorescence probe indicated that inoculated AMF enhanced photochemical efficiency of light reactions of the PSII in intact pistachio leaf tissues both under irrigation and waterstress conditions. Under mild and moderate water stress, mycorrhizal pistachio plants had higher relative Chl and Car content and higher gas-exchange capacity (increased photosynthesis and transpiration rate) but under severe water-stress condition (25% FC), the effects of mycorrhizal treatments were not noticeable. Data obtained in present study emphasized that Qazvini is more tolerant to water stress than Badami because photosynthesis activity in Qazvini was more efficiently protected than in the Badami, as indicated by related parameters. and V. In order to evaluate the effect of static magnetic field (SMF) on morphological and physiological responses of soybean to water stress, plants were grown under well-watered (WW) and water-stress (WS) conditions. The adverse effects of WS given at different growth stages was found on growth, yield, and various physiological attributes, but WS at the flowering stage severely decreased all of above parameters in soybean. The result indicated that SMF pretreatment to the seeds significantly increased the plant growth attributes, biomass accumulation, and photosynthetic performance under both WW and WS conditions. Chlorophyll a fluorescence transient from SMF-treated plants gave a higher fluorescence yield at J-I-P phase. Photosynthetic pigments, efficiency of PSII, performance index based on absorption of light energy, photosynthesis, and nitrate reductase activity were also higher in plants emerged from SMF-pretreated seeds which resulted in an improved yield of soybean. Thus SMF pretreatment mitigated the adverse effects of water stress in soybean., L. Baghel, S. Kataria, K. N. Guruprasad., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Water availability is an important factor for plant growth in arid environments. In recent decades, vermicompost (VC) fertilizer has been used in agriculture as a safe and effective fertilizer with high water-holding capacity. The aim of the present study was to characterize effects of VC fertilizer on photosynthetic activity of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L. cv. Karaj) under drought conditions at three different growth stages. Tests were carried out with four volumetric ratios of VC to soil, i.e., 0:100, 10:90, 20:80, and 30:70, and three levels of drought stress, i.e., no stress (NS), moderate drought (MS), and severe drought (SS) (100, 75, and 25% of field capacity, respectively). Evaluations were performed at the seedling, flowering, and podding stage. We found that the VC treatment under NS conditions significantly increased total chlorophyll content [Chl (a+b)], intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm) at all three stages. The VC addition of 10 and 20% significantly enhanced the Chl content and Fv/Fm under MS and Fv/Fm, C i, and P N under SS at the flowering stage. In conclusion, our results proved a positive effect of the VC fertilizer on photosynthesis of chickpea under NS conditions, but it was not found under MS and SS., S. R. Hosseinzadeh, H. Amiri, A. We investigated responses of chloroplasts from flag leaves of a newly-developed super-high-yield rice (Oryza sativa L.) hybrid LiangYouPeiJiu (LYPJ) to water stress (withholding irrigation) during the grain-filling period. In the early stage of water stress (0-6 d) only the activity of Hill reaction was inhibited, whereas activities of photophosphorylation and Ca2+-ATPase, and ATP content were increased and peaked in the day 6 of withholding irrigation. In the late stage of water stress (6-12 d), the activities of photosynthetic O2 evolution, Hill reaction, photophosphorylation, and Ca2+- ATPase, and ATP content were significantly reduced. The membrane lipid content was sharply decreased, especially of sulfoquinovosyl-diacylglycerol (SQDG) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG). The changes in the ultrastructure of chloroplasts included mainly a decrease in number of grana and increase in number of osmiophilic granules. and G.-X. Chen ... [et al.].
Water is a limited resource and is likely to become even more restricted with climate change. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of humic acid (HA) applications on photosynthesis efficiency of rapeseed plants under different watering conditions. Water stress strongly increased electron transport flux, probability that trapped excitation can move an electron into the electron transport chain beyond QA, and quantum yield of reduction of end electron acceptors at the PSI acceptor side. Application of HA decreased the values of these parameters to be similar to those of non-stress conditions. We found that, the application of HA improved plants net photosynthesis under water stress via increasing the rate of gas exchange and electron transport flux in plants., R. Lotfi, H. M. Kalaji, G. The combined effects of water status, vapour pressure deficit (VPD), and elevated temperature from heading to maturity were studied in barley. Plants growing at high VPD, either under well-watered or water deficit conditions, had higher grain yield and grain filling rate than plants growing at low VPD. By contrast, water stress decreased grain yield and individual grain dry matter at any VPD. Water regime and to a lesser extent VPD affected δ13C of plant parts sampled at mid-grain filling and maturity. The differences between treatments were maximal in mature grains, where high VPD increased δ13C for both water regimes. However, the total amount of water used by the plant during grain filling did not change as response to a higher VPD whereas transpiration efficiency (TE) decreased. The net photosynthetic rate (PN) of the flag leaves decreased significantly under water stress at both VPD regimes. However, PN of the ears was higher at high VPD than at low VPD, and did not decrease as response to water stress. The higher correlation of grain yield with PN of the ear compared with that of the flag leaf support the role of ear as the main photosynthetic organ during grain filling under water deficit and high VPD. The deleterious effects of combined moderately high temperature and drought on yield were attenuated at high VPD. and M. Sánchez-Díaz ... [et al.].
Osmotic adjustment, accumulation of soluble saccharides, and photosynthetic gas exchange were studied in five durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) and one wild emmer wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. dicoccoïdes) cultivars of contrasting drought tolerance and yield stability. Soil water contents (SWC) were 100, 31, 20, and 12 % of maximum capillary capacity. Under mild water stress (SWC 31 to 20 %), osmotic adjustment capacity and high accumulation of saccharides were found in cv. Cham1, a high yielding and drought tolerant cultivar, and in var. dicoccoïdes, while lowest values were noted in the durum wheat landraces Oued-Zenati and Jennah-Khotifa. Under more severe water stress (SWC 12 %), the cv. Cham1 maintained higher net photosynthetic rate (PN) than other genotypes. The observed changes in the ratio intercellular/ambient CO2 concentration (ci/ca) indicated that under mild and severe water stress, the decrease in PN was mainly due to stomatal and non-stomatal factors, respectively. and D. We studied water relations and gas exchange in six almond genotypes grafted on GF677 in response to withholding irrigation for 14 days and a subsequent 10-day rehydration period. The responses to drought stress significantly differed in the almond genotypes; the tolerant plants were distinguished and monitored. Leaf relative water content (RWC) decreased by more than 23%, leaf water potential dropped to less than -4.3 MPa, and electrolyte leakage increased to 43% in dehydration-sensitive genotypes. Photosynthesis (PN) and stomatal conductance (gs) of drought-sensitive genotypes were significantly reduced by 70% and 97% in response to water deficiency. Water stress significantly enhanced wateruse efficiency up to 10 folds in drought-tolerant almonds. The difference between leaf temperature and its surrounding air temperature (ΔT) increased significantly to more than 187% under water stress in drought-tolerant genotypes. In addition, the reduction in the g s and further ability to preserve RWC were involved probably in drought-tolerance mechanism in almond. Negative significant correlations were found between ΔT, PN, and gs. Based on the correlations, we suggested that ΔT could be used as a simple measurement for monitoring water stress development in the irrigation management of almond orchards. In conclusion, ‘Supernova’ and the Iranian genotypes ‘6-8’ and ‘B-124’, were found to be more droughttolerant compared with other genotypes in this experiment., S. Karimi, A. Yadollahi, K. Arzani, A. Earth’s climate has experienced notable changes during the past 50-70 years when global surface temperature has risen by 0.8°C during the 20th century. This was a consequence of the rise in the concentration of biogenic gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and ozone) in the atmosphere that contribute, along with water vapor, to the so-called ‘greenhouse effect’. Most of the emissions of greenhouse gases have been, and still are, the product of human activities, namely, the excessive use of fossil energy, deforestations in the humid tropics with associated poor land use-management, and wide-scale degradation of soils under crop cultivation and animal/pasture ecosystems. General Circulation Models predict that atmospheric CO2 concentration will probably reach 700 μmol(CO2) mol-1. This can result in rise of Earth’s temperature from 1.5 to over 5°C by the end of this century. This may instigate 0.60-1.0 m rise in sea level, with impacts on coastal lowlands across continents. Crop modeling predicts significant changes in agricultural ecosystems. The mid- and
high-latitude regions might reap the benefits of warming and CO2 fertilization effects via increasing total production and yield of C3 plants coupled with greater water-use efficiencies. The tropical/subtropical regions will probably suffer the worst impacts of global climate changes. These impacts include wide-scale socioeconomic changes, such as degradation and losses of natural resources, low agricultural production, and lower crop yields, increased risks of hunger, and above all waves of human migration and dislocation. Due to inherent cassava tolerance to heat, water stress, and poor soils, this crop is highly adaptable to warming climate. Such a trait should enhance its role in food security in the tropics and subtropics., M. A. El-Sharkawy., and Obsahuje bibliografii
