We hypothesized that decreased stomatal conductance (gs) at elevated CO2 might decrease transpiration (E), increase leaf water potential (ΨW), and thereby protect net photosynthesis rate (PN) from heat damage in maize (Zea mays L) seedlings. To separate long-term effects of elevated CO2, plants grew at either ambient CO2 or elevated CO2. During high-temperature treatment (HT) at 45°C for 15 min, leaves were exposed either to ambient CO2 (380 μmol mol-1) or to elevated CO2 (560 μmol mol-1). HT reduced PN by 25 to 38% across four CO2 combinations. However, the gs and E did not differ among all CO2 treatments during HT. After returning the leaf temperature to 35°C within 30 min, gs and E were the same or higher than the initial values. Leaf water potential (ΨW) was slightly lower at ambient CO2, but not at elevated CO2. This study highlighted that elevated CO2 failed in protecting PN from 45°C via decreasing gs and ΨW., M. N. Earth’s climate has experienced notable changes during the past 50-70 years when global surface temperature has risen by 0.8°C during the 20th century. This was a consequence of the rise in the concentration of biogenic gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and ozone) in the atmosphere that contribute, along with water vapor, to the so-called ‘greenhouse effect’. Most of the emissions of greenhouse gases have been, and still are, the product of human activities, namely, the excessive use of fossil energy, deforestations in the humid tropics with associated poor land use-management, and wide-scale degradation of soils under crop cultivation and animal/pasture ecosystems. General Circulation Models predict that atmospheric CO2 concentration will probably reach 700 μmol(CO2) mol-1. This can result in rise of Earth’s temperature from 1.5 to over 5°C by the end of this century. This may instigate 0.60-1.0 m rise in sea level, with impacts on coastal lowlands across continents. Crop modeling predicts significant changes in agricultural ecosystems. The mid- and
high-latitude regions might reap the benefits of warming and CO2 fertilization effects via increasing total production and yield of C3 plants coupled with greater water-use efficiencies. The tropical/subtropical regions will probably suffer the worst impacts of global climate changes. These impacts include wide-scale socioeconomic changes, such as degradation and losses of natural resources, low agricultural production, and lower crop yields, increased risks of hunger, and above all waves of human migration and dislocation. Due to inherent cassava tolerance to heat, water stress, and poor soils, this crop is highly adaptable to warming climate. Such a trait should enhance its role in food security in the tropics and subtropics., M. A. El-Sharkawy., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Most studies of responses of insects to elevated carbon dioxide have been made using short-term exposures to treated food plants and have involved measurements of responses in growth, reproduction, food consumption and efficiencies of conversion at specific stages in the life cycle. These will be reviewed in the light of longer-term studies recently published where whole generations have been reared in chambers with simultaneous treatment of plants and where insects have been free to select their food and microenvironment. Factors such as seasonal change in plants, choice of food plant, mode of feeding, timing of exposure, temperature, the role of natural enemies are considered and the whole placed in the context of other aspects of climate change.
It is concluded that in studies to date, the only feeding guild in which some species have shown increases in population density in elevated carbon dioxide are the phloem feeders. Chewing insects (both free-living,and mining) generally have shown no change or reduction in abundance, though relative abundance may be greatly affected. Compensatory feeding is common in these groups., John B. Whittaker, and Lit
C3 photosynthesis at high light is often modeled by assuming limitation by the maximum capacity of Rubisco carboxylation (VCmax) at low CO2 concentrations, by electron transport capacity (Jmax) at higher CO2 concentrations, and sometimes by
triose-phosphate utilization rate at the highest CO2 concentrations. Net photosynthetic rate (PN) at lower light is often modeled simply by assuming that it becomes limited by electron transport (J). However, it is known that Rubisco can become deactivated at less than saturating light, and it is possible that PN at low light could be limited by the rate of Rubisco carboxylation (VC) rather than J. This could have important consequences for responses of PN to CO2 and temperature at low light. In this work, PN responses to CO2 concentration of common bean, quinoa, and soybean leaves measured over a wide range of temperatures and PPFDs were compared with rates modeled assuming either VC or J limitation at limiting light. In all cases, observed rates of PN were better predicted by assuming limitation by VC rather than J at limiting light both below and above the current ambient CO2. One manifestation of this plant response was that the relative stimulation of PN with increasing the ambient CO2 concentration from 380 to 570 µmol mol-1 did not decrease at less than saturating PPFDs. The ratio of VC to VCmax at each lower PPFD varied linearly with the ratio of PN at low PPFD to PN at high PPFD measured at 380 µmol(CO2) mol-1 in all cases. This modification of the standard C3 biochemical model was much better at reproducing observed responses of light-limited PN to CO2 concentrations from
pre-industrial to projected future atmospheric concentrations., J. A. Bunce., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Jednou z nich je uzavřít CO2 hluboko do horninového masivu do pórů hostitelské horninové vrstvy (sekvestrace CO2). and Eva Dudková.
The purpose of the present study was to examine whether excessive CO2 output (V.co2excess) is dominantly attributable to hyperventilation during the period of recovery from repeated cycling sprints. A series of four 10-sec cycling sprints with 30-sec passive recovery periods was performed two times. The first series and second series of cycle sprints (SCS) were followed by 360-sec passive recovery periods (first recovery and second recovery). Increases in blood lactate (ΔLa) were 11.17±2.57 mM from rest to 5.5 min during first recovery and 2.07±1.23 mM from the start of the second SCS to 5.5 min during second recovery. CO2 output (V.co2) was significantly higher than O2 uptake (V.o2) during both recovery periods. This difference was defined as V.co2excess. V.co2excess was significantly higher during first recovery than during second recovery. V.co2excess was added from rest to the end of first recovery and from the start of the second SCS to the end of second recovery (CO2excess). ΔLa was significantly related to CO2excess (r=0.845). However, ventilation during first recovery was the same as that during second recovery. End-tidal CO2 pressure (PETco2) significantly decreased from the resting level during the recovery periods, indicating hyperventilation. PETco2 during first recovery was significantly higher than that during second recovery. It is concluded that V.co2excess is not simply determined by ventilation during recovery from repeated cycle sprints., T. Yano ... [et al.]., and Obsahuje seznam literatury
