This article concentrates on development of the mutual relations between ethics of technology (taken as a philosophical discipline) and so called technology assessment (as a branch dealing with multi- and transdisciplinary socio-scientific issues). It shows both identical and different signs of the interactions on examples taken from Germany and from the Czech Republic. Discussion on technology in Germany is noted for its strong moral charge - we can find here both enthusiasm for technology as well as very clean cut anti-technology attitudes. As for the Czech environment, there comes to mutual mixing of various attitudes - we can trace here inspiration taken from other countries - for example from France. The original contribution of the Czech way of thinking in the field of philosophy on technology in relation to ethics represents also so called conception of laboretism. Globally said, it appears that disputes over technology have their cause in various ethical attitudes of interested stakeholders. But different conceptions of what is and/or what is not ethical can be and should be analysed by rational means. Various practical objectives of the social technology assessment should not displace ethics in technology as a methodology of discursive management of technology conflicts. Scientific consultancy has to comprise both its descriptive and prescriptive aspects. It gives a new sense to interdisciplinary co-operation among various scientific disciplines and science and technology ethics. and Petr Machleidt.

5. Reliability verification of industrial heritage buildings

A number of factories, warehouses, power plants and other industrial buildings have been recognized as industrial culture heritage. At present considerable effort of architects and civil engineers is aimed at re-use of these structures in order to preserve their cultural and heritage value and to avoid wasting energy. However, heritage structures usually do not fulfil requirements of present codes of practice. Simplified conservative procedures of design of new structures given in present codes may lead to expensive repairs and losses of the cultural and heritage value when applied to existing structures. In accordance with EN 1990 and ISO 13822 a probabilistic procedure is proposed to improve the reliability assessment of industrial heritage buildings. The annual Villa Lanna Meetings of Science, or Else? are organized by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and the Collegium Helveticum, an Institute supported by both the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) and the University of Zurich. They bring together scientists from different fields of research to discuss general aspects of science, the position of science in society and its consequences to humanity. This year, now the 10th meeting was held in Prague from 11-13 January, its topic was Reproducibility - Arts, Science and Living Nature. Činorodý zemědělec, který se denně pohybuje na poli a v lese, přesně ví, jaké druhy kamení se válejí v okolí jeho domku. Zkušenost generací mu napověděla, z čeho je vhodné stavět zídku, z čeho základ domu, jaká hlína byla dobrá na vymazání trámů na povalu nebo kachlů v kamnech a z čeho se pálily cihly a vápno. V lomu za vsí, odkud pochází kámen na podezdívku a který byl zatopen vodou po průvalu, se jako dítě koupal. Současné městské prostředí, které koncentruje stále větší počet obyvatel, takovou přímou zkušenost se skalami, kameny a půdou odepřelo již několikáté generaci lidí, která vnímá umělé prostředí s dominanntním asfaltem a betonem. Ojediněle použitý přírodní dekorační kámen ve formě plastiky či obkladu na zdi je už dovezený, nemá svůj přirozený tvar a postrádá kontinuitu svého geologického okolí in situ, tedy na místě svého vzniku. and Veronika Štědrá.
