Insect-infested (II) acorns germinated 3 d earlier than the healthy (H) ones. However, germination ratio of II-acorns was strongly decreased compared with H-acorns and there were great differences in activities of amylase. We found an apparently lower net photosynthetic rate and total chlorophyll contents of the first true leaf of II-acorns than of the H-ones. Maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2, Fv/Fm) decreased in seedlings germinated from II-acorns than from the H-ones. Infestation of insects, especially for weevil (Curculio spp.) had significantly negative effects on length of taproots, height of plants, dry mass (DM) of roots and the first fully expanded true leaf. Leaf area and total N content of the first true leaf declined due to limitation of resource reserves in cotyledons. Damage of cotyledons caused by weevil accounted much for poor development of seedlings germinated from II-acorns. Genotypic variations were observed among 6 variants and an indigenous one as a control. An efficient genotype OCD(L) of Ocimum sanctum had the greatest content of chlorophylls [2.15 g kg-1(FM)], Chl a/b ratio of 1.86, net photosynthetic rate of 0.72 mg(CO2) m-2 s-1, and 1.56 % oil formation. Methyl chavicol formed 50.31 % of total oil in OSP-6 genotype, which had also maximum peroxidase activity [ΔOD 2.4 mg-1(protein)] and maximum production of eugenol (30.44 % of total oil). Chlorophyll (Chl) content, photochemical activity of chloroplasts as well as photosynthetic and crop productivity were studied in different winter hexaploid Triticale (xTriticosecale Witt.) lines and their F1 hybrids. Heterosis enhanced Chl content, photosynthetic potential, photosynthetic productivity, and grain yield only in several F1 hybrids of Triticale. Indication in some genotypes of close correlations among morphological structure, Chl content, photochemical activity of chloroplasts, photosynthetic potential, and plant productivity may be used in breeding practice of Triticale. and S. In order to maximize yield, Spathiphyllum, an ornamental plant, was cultured in vitro in novel culture vessels termed Vitron. The best growth was obtained by culturing plantlets on sugar-free liquid medium under CO2 enrichment (3 000 µmol mol-1 24 h-1 d-1) at a low photon flux density (PPFD of 45 µmol m-2 s-1), suggesting that the novel Vitron culture system is suitable for the photoautotrophic micropropagation of Spathiphyllum. and J. Field experiments were conducted under rain-fed conditions to study the growth and photosynthetic efficiency of transgenic Bt cotton hybrids during 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons. Three Bt cotton hybrids (Bollgard 1) and their non-Bt (NBt) counterparts viz. MECH 12, MECH 162, and MECH 184 were grown along with a local hybrid NHH44. Growth parameters such as plant height, main-stem nodes, biomass accumulation, and physiological processes like stomatal conductance (gs), and rates of transpiration (E) and photosynthesis (PN) did not differ significantly between Bt and NBt hybrids up to 80 DAS (d after sowing). Squaring commenced at 50 DAS both in Bt and NBt. The loss of young fruiting forms by the entomological factors was three times less in Bt than NBt. As a consequence, Bt had more early formed bolls on the lower canopy which contributed to higher biomass and seed cotton yield. On the other hand, bolls distributed intermittently in NBt. Heavy boll load altered the growth and physiological processes, and as a result Bt had higher gs, E, and PN than NBt. Since developing bolls (sink) divert the saccharides and nutrients from other organs, Bt plants with heavy boll load senesced early and stopped the production of new squares and bolls. High abundance of cockspur (Echinochloa crus-galli) at the geothermal carbon dioxide spring area in Stavešinci indicates that this species is able to grow under widely varying CO2 concentrations. Living cockspur plants can even be found very close to gas-releasing vents where growth is significantly reduced. Plant height correlated well with CO2 exposure. The δ13C value of the CO2 spring air was -3.9 ‰ and δ13C values of high-, medium-, and low-CO2 plants were -10.14, -10.44, and -11.95 ‰, respectively. Stomatal response directly followed the prevailing CO2 concentrations, with the highest reduction of stomatal conductance in high CO2 concentration grown plants. Analysis of the curves relating net photosynthetic rate to intercellular CO2 concentration (PN-Ci curves) revealed higher CO2 compensation concentration in plants growing at higher CO2 concentration. This indicates adjustment of respiration and photosynthetic carbon assimilation according to the prevailing CO2 concentrations during germination and growth. Significant differences in net photosynthetic rate (PN) of leaves between two maize (Zea mays L.) strains (Shuang 105 and 40×44) grown in the field were observed. At several growth stages, PN of 40×44 was higher than that of Shuang 105 (from 10.3 to 32.5 %). Moreover, the strain 40×44 had a higher plant height, larger leaf area, lower chlorophyll content, and higher photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2) (Fv/Fm and ΔF/Fm') than strain Shuang 105. Shuang 105, which showed lower PN, had lower stomatal conductances (gs) but slightly higher intercellular CO2 concentrations (Ci) than those of 40×44. Hence the differences in

High salt concentration is a major abiotic stress limiting plant growth and productivity in many areas of the world. Elaeagnus angustifolia L. adapts to adverse environments and is widely planted in the western region of China as a windbreaker and for landscape and soil stabilization. High salt concentrations inhibited photosynthesis of E. angustifolia, but the mechanism is not known. In this paper, RNA-sequencing was used to investigate effects of salt stress on the photosynthetic characteristics of the species. In total, 584 genes were identified and involved in photosynthetic pathways. The downregulation of genes that encode key enzymes involved in photosynthesis and genes correlated to important structures in photosystem and light-harvesting complexes might be the main reason, particularly, the downregulation of the gene that encodes magnesium chelatase. This would decrease the activity of enzymes involved in chlorophyll synthesis and the downregulation of the key gene that encodes Rubisco, and thereby decreases enzyme activity and the protein content of Rubisco., J. Culturing geranium at different doses of Zn from 0-1.0 g m-3 (Zn0 to Zn1.000) revealed that Zn is an antioxidant promoter, apart from its micronutrient essentiality. Zn0.250 was the critical concentration for maximum content (0.21 %) of total essential monoterpene oil(s). At Zn0.005-Zn0.250, net photosynthetic rate, and contents of chlorophyll and essential monoterpene oil(s) were affected. The maximum peroxidase activity was obtained at Zn0.250, with the production of biomolecule geraniol.
