The photosynthetic pathway of plant species collected at Menyuan, Henan, and Maduo sites, east of Tibetan Plateau, China, during the growing season were studied using stable carbon isotopes in leaves. The 232 samples leaves analyzed belonged to 161 species, 30 families, and 94 genera. The δ13C values (from -24.6 to -29.2 ‰) indicated that all the considered species had a photosynthetic C3 pathway. The absence of plant species with C4 photosynthetic pathway might be due to the extremely low air temperature characterizing the Tibetan Plateau. The average δ13C value was significantly (p<0.05) different between annuals and perennials at the three considered study sites. Hence the longer-lived species had greater water-use efficiency (WUE) than shorter-lived species, that is, longer-lived species are better adapted to the extreme environmental conditions of the Tibetan Plateau. and M. Insect-infested (II) acorns germinated 3 d earlier than the healthy (H) ones. However, germination ratio of II-acorns was strongly decreased compared with H-acorns and there were great differences in activities of amylase. We found an apparently lower net photosynthetic rate and total chlorophyll contents of the first true leaf of II-acorns than of the H-ones. Maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2, Fv/Fm) decreased in seedlings germinated from II-acorns than from the H-ones. Infestation of insects, especially for weevil (Curculio spp.) had significantly negative effects on length of taproots, height of plants, dry mass (DM) of roots and the first fully expanded true leaf. Leaf area and total N content of the first true leaf declined due to limitation of resource reserves in cotyledons. Damage of cotyledons caused by weevil accounted much for poor development of seedlings germinated from II-acorns. A mutual relationship between seedling establishment and seed-infesting insects may exist due to high predation on H-acorns by small rodents. and X. F. Yi, Z. B. Zhang
Net photosynthetic rate of yellow upper leaves (UL) of Ligustrum vicaryi was slightly, but not significantly higher than that of green lower leaves (LL). Diurnally, maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2, PS2 (Fv/Fm) of LL did not significantly decline but the UL showed fairly great daily variations. Yield of PS2 of UL showed an enantiomorphous variation to the photosynthetically active radiation and was significantly lower than in the LL. Unlike Fv/Fm, the efficiency of energy conversion in PS2 and both non-photosynthetic and photosynthetic quenching did not differ in UL and LL. Significant differences between UL and LL were found in contents of chlorophyll (Chl) a, b, and carotenoids (Car) and ratios of Chl a/b, Chl b/Chl (a+b), and Car/Chl (a+b). Leaf colour dichotocarpism in L. vicaryi was mainly caused by different photon utilization; sunflecks affected the LL. and Y. Q. Yang, X. F. Yi, P. Prasad.
