As a common tree species in northern China, Populus × euramericana "Neva" has an important practical value for the study of continuous cropping obstacles in poplar cultivation. Plant allelopathy is the main reason for continuous cropping obstacles, which are caused by allelochemicals, such as para-hydroxybenzoic acid (p-HB). The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of p-HB on the photosynthesis of poplar. Photosynthetic parameters of Populus × euramericana "Neva" poplar were determined in a pot culture experiment where five p-HB concentrations were used (0, 1, 2, 4, and 6 mmol L−1). Each seedling was treated with 4 L of p-HB solution every seven days, ten times in total. p-HB inhibited the photosynthesis of poplar significantly, as shown by a clear decline in the net photosynthetic rate. As a common waterfront and wet environment tree species, Salix babylonica shows a great potential for restoration of contaminated water or soil environments, such as phenol-polluted water. However, studies on such remediation effects have not been carried out yet. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of phenols on photosynthesis of S. babylonica. Photosynthetic and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of S. babylonica cuttings were determined in hydroponic experiment, where six phenol concentrations was used (0, 50, 100, 200, 400, and 800 mg L-1). Phenol presence inhibited photosynthesis of S. babylonica significantly, as the net photosynthetic rate (PN),
light-saturated net photosynthetic rate, apparent quantum yield, maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, and effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry declined significantly. The higher the concentration of phenol solution, the greater inhibition of photosynthesis occurred. Our data indicated that nonstomatal limitation was responsible for the reduction of PN. S. babylonica should be used to remediate phenol-contaminated water, when the concentration of phenol solution is lower than 200 mg L-1. Otherwise, the efficiency of photosynthesis of S. babylonica would decrease markedly. Atmospheric CO2 concentration continues to rise and is predicted to reach approximately 700 ppm by 2100. Some predictions suggest that the dry season in West Africa could be extended with climate change. This study examined the effects of elevated CO2 concentration and water deficit on growth and photosynthesis of juvenile cacao. Light-saturated photosynthesis (Pmax), quantum efficiency, and intrinsic water-use efficiency increased significantly in response to elevated CO2, as did a range of growth and development responses (e.g. leaf area and leaf number), but the magnitude of the increase was dependent on the water treatment. Stomatal index was significantly greater in the elevated CO2 treatment; an atypical response which may be a reflection of the environment in which cacao evolved. In this work, the injuries caused by clethodim herbicide application as well as the use of exogenous salicylic acid (SA) as a protective agent against clethodim in Zea mays leaves were examined. Although the target for clethodim is the inhibition of acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase) which is the key enzyme for fatty acid biosynthesis, it can indirectly affect the photosynthetic machinery, gaseous exchange and some biochemical parameters. Clethodim application caused chlorosis and yellowing of leaf-tip parts. Higher doses caused browning or reddening of leaves and sometimes dead parts of the leaf margins were observed. The rate of photosynthesis was significantly lowered and the pigments content was highly reduced as a response to clethodim spraying. Moreover, other gas-exchange properties were altered. Furthermore, accumulation of high amounts of carbohydrates, proteins and proline were detected. SA spraying three days prior clethodim application caused partially or totally disappearance of clethodim injuries and kept the leaves similar to those of control. Improved photosynthesis and enhanced pigments content were observed in leaves treated with SA. Other analyzed parameters showed values similar to those of the corresponding control. The aim of this work was to determine two types of photosynthetic water-use efficiency in order to examine their utility as selection criteria for tolerance of energy crops to soil water deficit. Furthermore, effects of crop cultivation on soil water content and storage were investigated. Seven energy crops were examined: miscanthus, prairie cordgrass, willow, thorn-free rose, Virginia mallow, Bohemian knotweed, and topinambour. The highest values of instantaneous (WUE) and intrinsic (WUEi) water-use efficiencies were found for miscanthus and prairie cordgrass. The reduction of WUE and/or WUEi was caused mainly by a rapid rise in the transpiration rate and a greater stomatal conductance, respectively. Principal component analysis showed that neither WUE nor WUEi could be recommended as universal selection criteria for the drought tolerance in different energy crops. The effects of various concentrations of bensulfuron-methyl residues (BSM, 0-500 μg kg-1) on the growth and photosynthesis of soybean and peanut were studied. Shoot length, root length, root-to-shoot ratio, and biomass of soybean and peanut seedlings declined with the increase of BSM residue concentrations. As the concentration of BSM increased, SPAD value, net photosynthetic rate, stomatal limitation, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate also declined with varying extent, but dark respiration rate and intercellular CO2 concentration increased gradually. PSII maximum quantum yield, actual quantum yield, and electron transport rate were significantly reduced by the BSM residues in soil, and the reduction was mostly attributed to the decrease in photochemical quenching coefficient. The results showed that photosynthesis in both crops was limited by nonstomatal factors. Cadmium is often detected in areas contaminated by heavy metals and the incidence of this element in dangerous concentrations has been increasing due to anthropogenic activities. The aim of this research was to determine Cd concentrations in tissues, quantify compounds, pigments and enzymes, and to evaluate the gas exchange. Our aim was also to identify components that can modify and contribute to tolerance of Cassia alata against Cd toxicity. We used five Cd concentrations (0, 22, 44, 88, and 132 μM) to validate our hypothesis. The Cd concentrations in tissues of C. alata plants increased significantly, compared with the control treatment, in the following graduated sequence: root > leaf > stem. Progressive enhancement in glutathione (GSH) was verified in plants treated with all Cd concentrations used, when compared with treatment without Cd. Antioxidant enzyme activities presented similar patterns with progressive enhancements, being a desirable characteristic for plants with a potential to hyperaccumulate Cd. Our results suggest that C. alata plants can be used for phytoremediation programs. Their defense mechanism is based on Cd accumulation in roots, coupled with increase in GSH and the efficient activity of antioxidant enzymes that contribute to minimize the oxidative stress and consequently improve the protection of the metabolic machinery., J. Increase in salinity is predicted to affect plant growth and survival in most arid and semiarid regions worldwide. Mitragyna parvifolia (Roxb.) Korth. is an important medicinal tree species distributed throughout the semiarid regions of India; however, it is facing a threat of its extinction in its natural habitat. We examined the effects of increasing NaCl salinity on two-month-old M. parvifolia seedlings grown in an environment-controlled chamber and exposed to soils of different electrical conductivity (EC) caused by NaCl [0-5 (control), 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, and 20-25 dS m-1)] for 85 days. Seedlings transferred to soil of EC >15 dS m-¹ did not survive beyond 1 week. Increase in the Na+ concentration negatively correlated with their height and positively correlated with their water-use efficiency (WUE). However, leaf area, net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate showed varying correlations and an overall decrease in these parameters compared with the control. At EC of 10-15 dS m-1, the seedling height was reduced by 37% and PN was lowered by 50% compared with those of the control. An increase in the Na+/K+ ratio was observed with increasing salinity. The maximum quantum efficiency of PSII significantly decreased with increasing salinity compared with the control. Our results suggest that the increase in salinity reduced the overall performance of the M. parvifolia seedlings. Intercropping is a sustainable agricultural practice used worldwide for highly efficient utilization of resources. However, short crops often grow under the shade of the canopy of tall crops in intercropping systems. Plants evolved two main strategies to deal with shade: avoidance and tolerance. Soybean (Glycine max), a legume crop, is often planted in intercropping. But little is known about a strategy that soybean may employ to deal with shade at seedling stage. Therefore, we determined morphological and physiological traits related to shade tolerance and shade avoidance in seedlings of two varieties. Generally, both varieties showed similar shade tolerance traits, such as increased specific leaf area and chlorophyll (Chl) content, and reduced photosynthetic capacity and the Chl a/b ratio. The light-limiting environment eliminated the benefits of shade tolerance traits for the carbon gain, which led to similar real-time photosynthesis and biomass in intercropping. By contrast, two varieties expressed different changes in shade avoidance traits. The variety Guixia 3 exhibited clear preference of shade avoidance that resulted in a high main stem, hypocotyl elongation, and biomass allocation towards the stem. The variety Gongxuan 1 showed those traits less. We suggested that the genetic variation occurs within soybean, thus the shade avoidance related traits might be important for variety selection for intercropping. Adults of Colorado potato beetle Leptinotarsa decemlineata are very active at room temperature, and their almost continuous struggling in the respirometer prevents the measurements of the patterns of gas exchange, body movements and heartbeat. The tonic immobility of beetles was evoked by light flashes and by shaking as external stimuli. The immediate reaction to these stimuli was the reflexive closing of the spiracles and the cessation of CO2 release for some minutes, which was followed by a large burst of this gas. The state of the evoked tonic immobility did not influence heartbeat and abdominal pulsations, but the periodically -occurring abdominal-thoracic pumping movements stopped for 2-5 minutes. During the periods of pumping ventilation the metabolic rate was increased about two times.The state of tonic immobility evoked by light flashes lasted 2-6 minutes, but when shaking was applied as a stimulus complete immobility was about two times longer.
