Variables of gas exchange of flag leaves and grain yield potentials of five representative winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars varied greatly across different development stages under the same management and irrigation. The cultivars with high yield potential had higher net photosynthetic rate (PN), PPFD (photosynthetic photon flux density) saturated photosynthetic rate (Psat), stomatal conductance (gs), and maximum apparent quantum yield of CO2 fixation (Φm,app) than those with low grain yield, but their dark respiration rate (RD) and compensation irradiance (Ic) were remarkably lower. Compared with overall increase of yield potential of 71 % from low yield cultivars to high yield ones, PN, Psat, Φm,app, and gs were 13, 19, 57, and 32 % higher, respectively; but RD and Ic decreased by 19 and 76 %, respectively. Such difference was evidently large during anthesis stage (e.g., PN by 33 %), which indicated that this period could be the best for assisting further selection for better cultivars. However, transpiration rate (E) and water use efficiency (WUE) differed only little. At different development stages, especially at anthesis, PN and Psat were positively correlated with Φm,app, gs, and yield potential, and negatively correlated with RD and Ic. An open-top chamber experiment was carried out from April through October 2006 to examine the effects of elevated (80 nmol mol-1) atmospheric O3 on Ginkgo biloba (4-years-old) in urban area. The air with ambient O3 (AA, ≈ 45 nmol mol-1) was used as control. The leaf mass and size, leaf area index, net photosynthetic rate (PN), apparent quantum yield, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance were decreased by elevated O3 (EO) exposure. Visible foliar injury, which is light-brown flecks, was observed in the EO OTCs after 90 d of exposure. Carboxylation efficiency (ΦCO2) and photorespiration and dark respiration rates were enhanced by EO exposure in the first half of the season, but all of them turned to be lower than those of the AA control at the end of experiment. Stomata limitation of photosynthesis was significantly higher than control in the whole season (p<0.05). Chlorophyll (Chl) content was lower in EO variant than in the control and the difference became more and more apparent through the season. Hence the decrease in PN of G. biloba exposed to EO was the result of both stomatal and non-stomatal limitations. In the early season, the inhibition of photosynthesis was mainly caused by the stomatal limitation, and the earliest response was photoprotective down-regulation of photosynthesis but not photodamage. The objective of the present investigation was to examine the extent of variations in single leaf net photosynthetic rate (PN) and its relative dependence on stomatal conductance (gs) and the mesophyll capacity to fix carbon in 12 clones of the natural rubber plant. There were significant variations in PN measured at low and saturating photon flux density (PFD); the extent of variation was larger at low than at saturating PFD. The compensation irradiance (CI) and apparent quantum yield of CO2 assimilation (φc) calculated from the PN/PFD response curves showed significant variations among the clones. PN at low irradiance was positively correlated with φc. Thus a clone with large PN at low irradiance, high φc, and low CI may tolerate shade better and thus produce a high tree stand per hectare. A strong positive correlation existed between PN saturated with radiant energy (Psat) and carboxylation efficiency (CE) estimated from the response curves of PN on intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), but gs showed a poor correlation with Psat High CO2 compensation concentration (Γ) led to low CE in Hevea clones. A clone with large Psat, high CE, low gs, and low Γ is the one in which photosynthesis is more dependent on the mesophyll factors than stomata. Photosynthetic characteristics of two hybrid rice combinations, Peiai 64S/E32 and Shanyou 63, were compared at the panicle differentiation stage. As compared with Shanyou 63, the new combination Peiai 64S/E32 showed a significantly higher net photosynthetic rate (PN), apparent quantum yield of carbon assimilation (Φc), carboxylation efficiency (CE), and photorespiratory rate (RP) as well as leaf chlorophyll content, but a significantly lower dark respiration rate (RD) and compensation irradiance (Ic). It also showed a slightly higher photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm and ΔF/Fm') of photosystem 2, a lower non-photochemical quenching (qN), and a similar CO2 compensation concentration (Γ) as compared to Shanyou 63. and Hua Jiang ... Radiation quality was an important environmental cue to stimulate seed germination in Acacia mangium. The photo-synthetic CO2 assimilation rate, dark respiration rate, total biomass, and relative growth rate of seedlings grown under monochromatic radiation were significantly lower than those of seedlings grown under full spectrum radiation. Walnut (Juglans regia L.) plantlets were incubated during micropropagation in standard vessels (quasi confmed vessels) or in aerated vessels flushed with 360 or 20 000 cm^(C02) under irradiances of 70 (LI) and 250 (HI) pmol m"^ s'*. Plantlet morphology was strongly affected by the environment; leaf surface was increased, but shoot elongation and number of stems were reduced after increasing the irradiance of culture. Gross photosynthesis (Pq) capacity measured by using the •®02 isotope and mass-spectrometry techniques was increased by increasing photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) and CO2 concentration. Plantlets exhibited a potential for photorespiratory activity and Mehler-type reaction and a high rate of mitochondrial respiration in all vessel types and irradiances. When a long-term HI was applied, gas exchange rates (Pq and O2 uptake) were reduced in most of the vessel and PPF conditions, except in quasi confmed vessels. Under all the growth conditions, net photosynthetic rate (P^) was zero or slightly positive and the dry matter accumulation was very similar. Changes in O2 exchange, growth rate or enzyme activities linked to carbon fixation that were induced by changes in PFD and CO2 concentration showed that the photosynthetic characteristics of plantlets were typical for hetero-mixotrophic tissues.
Tropospheric ozone (O3) decreases photosynthesis, growth, and yield of crop plants, while elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) has the opposite effect. The net photosynthetic rate (PN), dark respiration rate (RD), and ascorbic acid content of rice leaves were examined under combinations of O3 (0, 0.1, or 0.3 cm3 m-3, expressed as O0, O0.1, O0.3, respectively) and CO2 (400 or 800 cm3 m-3, expressed as C400 or C800, respectively). The PN declined immediately after O3 fumigation, and was larger under O0.3 than under O0.1. When C800 was combined with the O3, PN was unaffected by O0.1 and there was an approximately 20 % decrease when the rice leaves were exposed to O0.3 for 3 h. The depression of stomatal conductance (g s) observed under O0.1 was accelerated by C800, and that under O0.3 did not change because the decline under O0.3 was too large. Excluding the stomatal effect, the mesophyll PN was suppressed only by O0.3, but was substantially ameliorated when C800 was combined. Ozone fumigation boosted the RD value, whereas C800 suppressed it. An appreciable reduction of ascorbic acid occurred when the leaves were fumigated with O0.3, but the reduction was partially ameliorated by C800. The degree of visible leaf symptoms coincided with the effect of the interaction between O3 and CO2 on PN. The amelioration of O3 injury by elevated CO2 was largely attributed to the restriction of O3 intake by the leaves with stomatal closure, and partly to the maintenance of the scavenge system for reactive oxygen species that entered the leaf mesophyll, as well as the promotion of the PN. and K. The long-term impact of elevated concentration of CO2 on assimilation activity of sun-exposed (E) versus shaded (S) foliage was investigated in a Norway spruce stand [Picea abies (L.) Karst, age 14 years] after three years of cultivation in two domes with adjustable windows (DAW). One DAW was supplied with ambient air [AC, ca. 350 µmol(CO2) mol-1) and the second with elevated CO2 concentration [EC = AC plus 350 µmol(CO2) mol-1]. The pronounced vertical profile of the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) led to the typical differentiation of the photosynthetic apparatus between the shaded and sun needles. Namely, photon-saturated values of maximal net photosynthetic rate (PNmax) and apparent quantum yield (α) were significantly higher/lower for E-needles as compared with the S-ones. The prolonged exposure to EC was responsible for the apparent assimilatory activity stimulation observed mainly in deeply shaded needles. The degree of this stimulation decreases in the order: S-needles dense part > S-needles sparse part > E-needles dense part > E-needles sparse part. In exposed needles some signals on a manifestation of the acclimation depression of the photosynthetic activity were found. The long-term effect of EC was responsible for the decrease of nitrogen content of needles and for its smoother gradient between E- and S-needles.
