In the course of cytogenetic studies on Alegoria castelnaui Fleutiaux & Sallé 1889 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae: Tenebrioninae: Ulomini) from Guadeloupe, a number of adult specimens were dissected. A larva was found in the abdomens of almost all of the females. The karyotype, 20,XX / 20,Xyp, and the presence of heterochromatin at multiple chromosomal locations, of the larvae and adults were similar, which excludes parasitism and indicates viviparous reproduction. The adverse habitat of the adults, i.e., putrid and fermenting pseudo-stems of banana trees rather than geo-climatic conditions, may explain the occurrence of viviparity in this species. This is the first example of (ovo-)viviparity in the Ulomini tribe and among New World Tenebrionidae. A. castelnaui is regularly collected on banana trees infested with the weevil Cosmopolites sordidus Germar, 1824, a major pest of banana trees around the word. The coexistence of these two species on banana trees may be coincidental but another Ulomini species, Eutochia pulla Erichson 1843, is described as an egg predator of C. sordidus in Africa and therefore, A. castelnaui could also be a predator of this pest.
The tenebrionid beetles on 25 circum-Sicilian islands were studied to determine the influence of island geographical and landscape features on three main intercorrelated biogeographical patterns: (1) species richness, studied using species-area and species environment relationships, (2) species assemblage composition, investigated using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA), and (3) inter-site faunal similarity, investigated using Canonical Correlation Analysis (CANCOR) applied to multidimensional scaling of inter-island faunal dissimilarities. Species richness was mostly influenced by island area and landscape heterogeneity (expressed using various indices of diversity based on land cover categories). When species identities were considered in the CCA, no substantial effect of landscape was detected. Current island isolation did not have a strong influence on species richness, but has a distinct effect in determining species assortments on the remotest islands. Historical influences of Pleistocene landbridge connections were not detectable in species richness relationships using geographical variables in species richness analyses or in assemblage gradients in the CCA, but emerged distinctly from inter-island similarities in the CANCOR. and Simone Fattorini.

Immature stages of a South African tenebrionid beetle, account is the first modern description of the egg and first and older larval instars of the genus Anomalipus and the subtribe Anomalipina. The significance of larval characters of Anomalipus and other relevant taxa for classification of the subfamily Opatrinae sensu Medvedev (1968) [= "opatrine lineage: Opatrini" sensu Doyen & Tschinkel (1982)] are discussed. A synopsis of Anomalipus plebejus plebejulus Endrödy-Younga, 1988, of the tribe Platynotini are described and illustrated. This Platynotini larvae is presented.
The red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, is a pest of stored products. It is also regarded as a model species for studying development, genetics, biology, physiology and biochemistry. Recently, it has become a model for use in RNA interference experiments. 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) is involved in insect metamorphosis and its role in organ development in T. castaneum are based on hormonal treatment in conjunction with RNAi. However, information on the biological, morphological and physiological effects of 20E on T. castaneum is still limited. This study reveals the responses of T. castaneum larvae to injections with various doses of 20E (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ng / insect). The results show that larvae injected with 20E reached the prepupal, pupal and adult stages earlier than the control group. Different degrees of morphological change were observed in nine traits, including the appearance of pupal prothetelic organs in the larvae. Moreover, an injection of a high dose of 20E reduced the body weights of the resulting insects at each stage, as well as the length and width of elytra. The enzymatic activity of α-amylase in the resulting adults also decreased significantly. This indicates that injection of 20E caused precocious metamorphosis in T. castaneum by inducing changes in morphology and α-amylase activity, and the optimal concentrations that induce such phenomena were in the range of 100-200 ng / insect. The tenebrionid fauna of the Tuscan Islands (Central Italy) is well known and is an ideal system for studying the role of current and historical factors in determining the biogeographical patterns in a complex archipelago. Cluster analyses, species-area relationships and Mantel tests were used to investigate the influence of current geography and Pleistocene connections with the mainland on the structure of insular communities. Current biogeographical similarity patterns fit both Pleistocene and Recent geography, but marked effects of Pleistocene geography appeared when the influence of Recent geography was removed. Thus, in contrast to more mobile insects, such as butterflies and chrysidids, tenebrionid colonization is likely to have occurred via land-bridges when the islands were connected to the mainland in the Pleistocene. The relict distributions of organisms with poor mobility should be of great concern to conservationists, because depletion of island populations cannot be balanced by new immigrations from mainland populations. The continued influence of man on the Tuscan Islands has adversely affected the natural environment, however, man made habitats may also be colonized and exploited by tenebrionids.
Habitat use of Bolitophagus reticulatus (L.) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), living in the basidiocarps of Fomes fomentarius (L.) Kickx, was investigated in three forest areas in south-eastern Norway: (1) a continuous, coniferous forest, (2) an agricultural area with mostly deciduous forest islands in a matrix of cultivated land and (3) a homogeneous, old deciduous forest stand. B. reticulatus was almost exclusively found inside dead basidiocarps. The size of the basidiocarp was the most important variable for predicting the probability of B. reticulatus presence in the basidiocarps from all three study areas. Drier basidiocarps had a higher probability of beetle presence than the wetter ones. Basidiocarps situated above the ground level had a higher probability of beetle presence than those close to or on the ground level. In the first study area, the presence of Cisidae was found to reduce the probability of B. reticulatus presence perhaps as a result of competition. The disappearance of beetles from previously inhabited basidiocarps seemed to be due to depletion of resources.
Haemolymph levels of amino acids, sugars and glycerol were investigated in the tenebrionid Physadesmia globosa during dehydration and rehydration. The absolute amount of amino acid decreases during dehydration and increases during rehydration, indicating active regulation of this solute (the osmolal contribution of amino acids is large - approx. 25%). Changes in the amino acid content of the haemolymph during dehydration are not the result of interchange with soluble protein; the possibility exists during rehydration (between 1 h and 48 h). Trehalose and glucose are the only sugars found in appreciable quantity in the haemolymph of this species. Their osmolal contributions (total sugar: 2.6%), and contributions to osmoregulation, are not great. Glycerol is a minor osmolar effector in the haemolymph of Physadesmia, and changes in its levels do not contribute importantly to the regulation of haemolymph osmotic pressure.
We analyzed the abundance, distribution and niche overlap of species (Pianka's Ojk index) in tenebrionid beetle communities inhabiting different biotopes in Tyrrhenian and Adriatic sand dunes. The rank abundance distribution of the different species has the form of a geometric series in both communities as predicted by the niche preemption hypothesis for communities in harsh environments. Mean niche overlap values did not deviate significantly from null expectations, which indicates random interspecific interactions. These results, coupled with evidence of species habitat preferences, led us to conclude that the community organization of tenebrionid species inhabiting coastal dunes is determined more by habitat preferences than interspecific competition., Simone Fattorini, Davide Bergamaschi, Cristina Mantoni, Alicia T. Gender-specific reproductive roles are important factors determining sexual dimorphism. Here, we investigate the effects of sex-based differences and reproductive status on the defence of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst, 1797) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) against infection by Steinernema feltiae (Filipjev, 1934) (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae). Female and male beetles, either virgin or post-copulation, were exposed individually to nematodes. Individuals were then sampled every 12 h, dissected, and checked for the presence of nematodes; we also measured their phenoloxidase (PO) activity. Reproductive status affected resistance to nematodes and PO activity as infected virgin individuals had a higher PO activity and lower mortality than reproducing individuals, with no differences between sexes. Mortality also increased with time, while PO activity did not change. Parasite load was related to reproductive status and sex, with reproducing females with the highest parasite loads in all treatments, and virgin males with more nematodes than sexually active males. Our results indicate that the costs of reproduction impair the immunological system of T. castaneum similarly in both sexes.
