There is increasing recognition of the occurrence of non-native species that are invasive and potentially contribute to biodiversity loss. A two-year camera trap survey was undertaken on Mountain Mosor, Croatia to determine the daily and seasonal activity patterns of recently introduced non-native aoudad (Ammotragus lervia). Aoudad were most active in open rocky habitats and least active in forest habitats. The effect of habitat on the recorded number of aoudad was significant, while the effects of month and the interaction month × habitat were not. The results showed a typical bimodal activity pattern of aoudad, with a modest peak in activity between 5:00 and 9:00 a.m., and a second, more pronounced activity peak between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. Since the native habitat of aoudad is similar to that in the Mediterranean region, the inferred range of daily and seasonal activities show that the species is well adapted to the new habitat.
The habitat choice of foraging bats depends on the local food supply as well as on vegetation structures that may enable the animals to orientate by echolocation. We examined the associations of bats with different types of landscape elements. Effects of the local insect occurrence, of the canopy structure and of linear vegetation elements on the presence of bats were compared. Bat activity increased with the insect abundance (p = 0.025). Furthermore, regression analysis revealed that bat activity was positively correlated (p = 0.004) with the relative area of open canopy type (clearances, still waters), and vise versa was negatively associated with the area of closed canopy (p = 0.0005). Bat species that predominantly forage in different vertical strata (above or below the canopy), differed in the activity at the various habitat types. Pipistrelle bats and Myotis species favoured open canopy areas (p = 0.007; p= 0.029), whereas Nyctalus species were not significantly more active at this patch type, compared to closed canopy areas (p = 0.0712). Linear characteristics of the vegetation (edges, paths) in general did not regulate the local preferences of bats (p = 0.154), but they corresponded to bat activity in complex structured areas (e.g. clearances with trees; p = 0.008).
One of the most compelling challenges for conservation biologists is the preservation of species with restricted ranges. Carabus olympiae Sella, 1855, a ground beetle species inhabiting two small areas in the western Italian Alps, is an example of a steno-endemic and endangered insect species. Despite the fact that this species is historically well known to professional and amateur entomologists, its autecology is virtually unknown. In the present study we used pitfall traps to study habitat selection and phenology, and radiotelemetry to measure differences in movement parameters between sexes, habitats and periods. Data from pitfall trapping suggested that C. olympiae actively selects both shrubberies (alpen rose Rhododendron ferrugineum and bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus) and beech forests and avoids pastures, and that population size peaks in July. All radio-tagged individuals (n = 21) moved without a preferred direction, and were more active at night than by day. Males covered greater distances and had more tortuous trajectories than females. Distances covered in forests and alpen rose shrubberies were not significantly different, but paths in beech forests were more convoluted than in shrubberies. The movement pattern observed fits the requirements of a typical "olfactory-tactile" insect predator that looks for prey by systematically exploring its territory. Movement parameters suggested that both beech forests and alpen rose shrubberies are suitable for this species and indicated that the spatial distribution of shrubs in shrubberies can constrain trajectories. The implications for conservation are: (i) any human intervention which results in enlargement of the present coverage of pastures should be controlled; (ii) forest management may be tolerated, with the condition that alpen rose shrubberies remain or develop after tree-cutting; (iii) once a shrubbery has established, it should be preserved through appropriate management.
Habitat use of Bolitophagus reticulatus (L.) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), living in the basidiocarps of Fomes fomentarius (L.) Kickx, was investigated in three forest areas in south-eastern Norway: (1) a continuous, coniferous forest, (2) an agricultural area with mostly deciduous forest islands in a matrix of cultivated land and (3) a homogeneous, old deciduous forest stand. B. reticulatus was almost exclusively found inside dead basidiocarps. The size of the basidiocarp was the most important variable for predicting the probability of B. reticulatus presence in the basidiocarps from all three study areas. Drier basidiocarps had a higher probability of beetle presence than the wetter ones. Basidiocarps situated above the ground level had a higher probability of beetle presence than those close to or on the ground level. In the first study area, the presence of Cisidae was found to reduce the probability of B. reticulatus presence perhaps as a result of competition. The disappearance of beetles from previously inhabited basidiocarps seemed to be due to depletion of resources.
Movements, home-range size and habitat use of the European wolf (Canis lupus) are described in the Slovak Carpathians. The study was carried out in 1994–2002 in two national parks of central Slovakia. In the Tatry National Park we monitored for 11 months an adult male associated with a pack of 7. In the Nízke Tatry National Park we radio-tracked an adult female for 82 months (1995–2002). Over the course of the study the pack size in the Nízke Tatry ranged from 2 to 7 members. In this park the most intensive telemetry was conducted from 1996 to 1997 when the radio-tagged female reared her offspring. Home – ranges of radio-collared wolves calculated for the whole period of radio – tracking (MCP with 100 % of observations) were 146 km2 (male) and 191 km2 (female), respectively. Extraterritorial forays were not observed. Core areas of the home – ranges estimated by the Kernel method (50 % of locations), were small (21 km2: male; 28 km2: female) and overlapped mainly with the forest habitats heavily used by red deer (Cervus elaphus). The size of territory used in summer was 24 % – 49 % smaller than in winter.
The Scarce Large Blue (Maculinea teleius) is an endangered butterfly throughout Europe due to its special life-cycle and habitat loss. Our aims were to describe the microhabitats available to this butterfly, to test what factors influence the presence and density of M. teleius adults and to investigate the relationship between host ant species and M. teleius. The vicinities of eight fens were sampled, where there are four types of microhabitats available for this butterfly: Narrowleaf Cattail (Typha angustifolia), Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), Marsh Woundwort (Stachys palustris) and Purple Moorgrass (Molinia coerulea) dominated vegetation. In five transects (50 × 5 m) around each fen (running from the edge of the fen into the meadows) the number of imagos was counted twice a day during the flight period. Along the transects, the following parameters were measured or assessed: number of flowerheads of foodplant (Sanguisorba officinalis), microhabitat type, grazing intensity, soil humidity, vegetation height and host ant presence. The four microhabitat types differed significantly in soil humidity, vegetation height, foodplant density and distance from a fen. Generally the Typha microhabitat, situated closest to fens, had the highest soil humidity and vegetation height, followed by the Lythrum, Stachys and finally the Molinia microhabitat along a gradient decreasing soil humidity and vegetation height. The foodplant was most abundant in the Lythrum and Stachys microhabitats. Using linear mixed models and forward stepwise manual selection we found that microhabitat type was the most important factor determining the presence of M. teleius. The local grazing intensity had no direct effect but flowerheads of the foodplant had a positive effect on the abundance of butterflies. The number of butterflies was significantly higher in quadrats where the host ant (Myrmica scabrinodis) was present compared to those where they were absent. Our results suggest that grazing should be continued in order to maintain the current distribution of microhabitats and survival of the butterflies.
