Light trapping is the most widely used tool for determining the diversity of nocturnal Lepidoptera, but UV LEDs have yet to be used as light sources for the large-scale monitoring of Lepidoptera. We assessed the efficiency of this novel light source for sampling moths using a Heath type moth equipped with a strip of 150 high brightness UV LEDs (emission peak 398 nm, ~ 15 W) powered by a 12 V battery. We compared the number of individuals, the number of species and the Geometridae / Noctuidae ratio recorded for the samples collected using UV LED traps with those collected in two monitoring programs carried out in the same geographic region using two different light sources: a 200 W incandescent lamp (Rothamsted trap) and a 160 W mercury vapour lamp (manual catch). The total catch consisted of 61,120 individuals belonging to 699 species. The species richness rarefaction curves revealed that the Rothamsted trap collected fewer species and individuals than UV LED traps. Furthermore, the median numbers of species and individuals caught by UV LED traps fell within the range of those caught by mercury vapour lamp traps. In addition, the community composition recorded using incandescent lamps and UV LEDs was similar. The data obtained using UV LED traps, in absolute terms and in comparison with the other light sources and different sampling methods, clearly reveal that this light source is suitable for sampling macro-moth communities. The tenebrionid beetles on 25 circum-Sicilian islands were studied to determine the influence of island geographical and landscape features on three main intercorrelated biogeographical patterns: (1) species richness, studied using species-area and species environment relationships, (2) species assemblage composition, investigated using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA), and (3) inter-site faunal similarity, investigated using Canonical Correlation Analysis (CANCOR) applied to multidimensional scaling of inter-island faunal dissimilarities. Species richness was mostly influenced by island area and landscape heterogeneity (expressed using various indices of diversity based on land cover categories). When species identities were considered in the CCA, no substantial effect of landscape was detected. Current island isolation did not have a strong influence on species richness, but has a distinct effect in determining species assortments on the remotest islands. Historical influences of Pleistocene landbridge connections were not detectable in species richness relationships using geographical variables in species richness analyses or in assemblage gradients in the CCA, but emerged distinctly from inter-island similarities in the CANCOR. and Simone Fattorini.
In Mediterranean habitats, the specialist butterfly Euphydryas aurinia oviposits on Lonicera implexa. Previous work has shown that ovipositing females select and lay a higher number of egg clusters on certain plants. In this paper the results of a field study aimed at assessing whether females use plant size and/or plant or leaf greenness (i.e., chlorophyll concentrations) as cues for oviposition are described. Size of plants did not appear to be an important factor in determining host plant selection, probably because even small plants provide enough resources for the young larvae to reach the diapausing stage and because last instar larvae, the most likely to face resource depletion, can move great distances in search of food. Measurements of both spectral reflectance and chlorophyll concentration of plants failed to reveal differences between host and non-host plants. On the other hand, reflectance and chlorophyll concentration of leaves were found to be important in oviposition choice as egg clusters were generally located on the greenest leaves with the highest chlorophyll contents. This suggests that females use visual cues to select the leaves that will provide optimal growth opportunities for newly hatched larvae. Although there was some indication that plants receiving a greater number of egg clusters also had more leaves of high chlorophyll content, multiple egg batches on single plants could also be a consequence of females being attracted by the presence of conspecific egg clusters.
This article presents Christian Kyrill Schneider OFM, a significant yet not widely known Franciscan missionary who lived in the second half of the 18th century and worked in Egypt and surrounding Middle East Area. His autography that is only available as a manuscript and has never been presented before is fully described here. An excerpt of one chapter offers an insight into a catching egodocument from the beginning of the 19th century. This study is set in the context of Franciscan missions with an important focus on the activity of brothers from the Czech lands in the Middle East. Southern-African Longitarsus capensis species-group, which is closely related to the Mediterranean anchusae species-group is revised. L. capensis species-group includes 15 species, 8 of which are new to science: Longitarsus capensis Baly, 1877, L. cedarbergensis Biondi, 1999, L. luctuosus Biondi, 1999, L. lugubris Biondi, 1999, L. melanicus Biondi, 1999, L. neseri Biondi, 1999, L. transvaalensis Biondi, 1999, L. afromeridionalis sp.n., L. debiasei sp.n., L. grobbelaariae sp.n., L. hexrivierbergensis sp.n., L. malherbei sp.n., L. piketbergensis sp.n., L. rouxi sp.n., and L. sudafricanus sp.n. A key to all the species is presented as well as line drawings of male and female genitalia, scanning electron micrographs of some diagnostic morphological characters, and auto-ecological and zoogeographical data. Relationships within the capensis-group, and between the anchusae and capensis-group are better defined and hypotheses explaining the separate distributions of Mediterranean and south African anchusae and capensis species-groups proposed. Finally, the host-plant shift from native Lobostemon spp. to the introduced plant Echium plantagineum L. shown by some species of the capensis group is also discussed.
We studied the photosynthetic performance of sterile and fertile sporophytes in a natural population of the fern Dryopteris affinis growing within a riparian forest (Central Italy) using chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence transients, the OJIP phase, where O is for the minimum fluorescence, P is for the peak (the maximum), and J and I are inflections. The “vitality” of the samples was assessed by the maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry obtained indirectly from the fluorescence data (Fv/Fm); in the same way, the so-called performance index (PIABS) was obtained from fluorescence data. The photosynthetic performance (inferred from PIABS) of D. affinis changed significantly with the seasonal development of the fronds. The highest photosynthetic performance was recorded in the summer, corresponding to the period of spore release. The photosynthetic performance decreased in the winter, down to the minimal values of senescent fronds reached at the end of the seasonal cycle (May-June). On the whole, during the seasonal development, sterile and fertile fronds had a similar photosynthetic behaviour, as inferred from fluorescence data. At the end of spore maturation and dispersal (September-October), the fertile fronds showed somewhat lower photosynthetic performance than the sterile fronds, as revealed by PIABS. Being a long-lived fern, confined to humid and undisturbed sites in the Mediterranean, D. affinis deserves to be further investigated as a potential indicator of ecological continuity in Mediterranean riparian forests., L.
