Selected populations of five closely related species of the genus Cicada L. were collected mainly on the Portuguese, Greek and Turkish mainland, as well as on several Aegean islands. Ten morphometric traits of external structures and seven of male genitalia were analysed and the results revealed patterns in morphometric variation for each species. Only C. lodosi was always completely discriminated by both character sets and C. barbara by the male genitalia analysis. For the remaining species there was great overlap between the clusters. Body length, of the external morphological structures, and measurements of the pygophore, of the male genitalia, were the best variables for identifying C. lodosi and C. barbara. The present morphometric analyses revealed that divergence in morphology is much less pronounced than the divergence in acoustic signals and DNA. Thus, the congruence between morphological divergence, namely at the level of the external structures, and both behavioural (acoustic) and genetic divergence is quite low.
The Pilsen-Senec Mesolithic station is situated on the left banks of the Berounka River, 14-16 meters above its current level, in an industinct saddle 326 m above sea level. The chipped stone industry form Pilse-Senec has a distinctly diverse material composition. The raw material are predominantly local and include different varieties of hornstone, lydite, slate, quartz, sandstone and limonite. Imported materials are represented by Nordic flint, differnet varieties of Bavarian hornstone and northwest Bohemian quartzite (Bečov, Skršín and Tušimeice types). The cipped stone industry from Pilsen-Senec is a relatively large collection of artifacts (2 069 pieces) with madny different raw materials. Trhe pridution part of the collection is absolutely predominat. The number of microliths and retouched artifats is very small. Hammerstones,anvils and heating stones are also presnet. Covetional typological analysis has differentiated between two groups of artifacts. The first group has characteristic Mesolithic microliths - such as Komornica type points, sements, a triangle, Borki type blade, and microblades. A tendecy toward microlithization is also indicated by several other tools such as end-scrapers, burins and awls. The second group consists of artifacts typical for the late Paleolithic period, for example a convexed backed point, chisels, awls,, bacek blades, lateral burigns and long blades. Coronary and carotid artery structure was studied in rats in order to analyze the processes in the cardiovascular system in NO-deficient hypertension model. Long-term inhibition of NO synthase was induced by L-nitro arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 50 mg/kg/day p.o.) for a period of 8 weeks. An increase in blood pressure and heart/body weight ratio confirmed the reliability of the model. The wall thickness as well as the calculated wall area of the coronary artery increased by 70 % and 50 %, respectively, in comparison to control vessels. The wall thickness and the calculated wall area of the carotid artery increased by 73 % and 70 %, respectively. Further analysis indicated that both the tunica intima and tunica media in the coronary and the carotid artery increased quantitatively in a similar manner. Remarkable differences were found in the contribution of cellular and noncellular components in the tunica media of the coronary and carotid arteries of experimental animals. The calculated extracellular area increased by 116 % in comparison to the control coronary artery and by 97 % in comparison to the control carotid artery. The increase in extracellular matrix of the tunica media of coronary and carotid arteries seems to be basic cause of the remodelling of the vessels studied.
A software system STESYS for interactive and flexible generation of stereological test systems is described. STESYS enables to implement many of the recent unbiased stereological methods applied to biomedical research and clinical diagnosis by using a simple personal computer. Advantages of the STESYS software are illustrated by several examples of stereological measurements for estimating the number, total and mean cross-sectional area, volume and surface area.
The goal of this study is to determine the validity of morpholineaments network that was inferred based on morphostructural analysis of digital elevation model (DEM), by crosschecking with documented faults. The test field has been spread over the exploitation areas in the Zlaté Hory ore district. Various morphometric analyses such as slope, aspect, first directional derivative, gradient operator, combination of altitude and shaded relief, were chosen as particular tools of the morphostructural analysis. The results of each analysis were compared with the results of structural-tectonic mapping. The inferred morpholineaments network was compared with mining maps of the scale 1:500, which provide detailed information about tectonic deformation of rock massif in the area of interest and were used to image fault traces on the surface. The validity of inferred morpholineaments network was determined by authorized software SROV_TEKT, developed by the authors.
