Mimořádně významné jsou nálezy mincí, skládacích vážek, kupeckých závaží a pozdně nomádských třmenů. and The article presents the results of the archaeological excavation of the Kostice – Zadní hrúd site, conducted in 2009–2011. The investigated site, 1.5 km from the heart of the nearby Great Moravian centre at Pohansko, lies at the edge of the Dyje (Thaya) River floodplain on a nondescript sand dune. A total of 160 sunken features and two graves from various periods were investigated over the excavated area of 2,405 m2. The majority of finds were from the Early Middle Ages, with the peak of settlement falling between the tenth and twelfth centuries. In the ninth century, the local settlement was part of the subsistence base for the vast Great Moravian agglomeration at Pohansko; following the demise of Pohansko, the Kostice – Zadní hrúd settlement was transformed into a craft-agrarian and trade centre of the second level. Finds of coins, balance scales, merchants’ weights and late nomadic stirrups are of extraordinary importance.
The article discusses the methodology employed in the excavation of the outer fortified area of the Early Medieval stronghold at Budeč. This methodology made it possible to establish in the stronghold’s western part, at the “Na kašně” location (field excavation in 1981–1986 and in 1989), the stratigraphic succession of anthropogenic activities, which helped to clarify the character, interconnection and dating of development forms of the outer fortifications and settlement in the studied part of the Budeč foregrounds. and Článek seznamuje s metodikou výzkumu vnějšího opevněného areálu raně středověkého hradiště Budeč, která umožnila v jeho západní části, v poloze Na kašně (terénní výzkum v letech 1981–86, 1989) stanovit stratigrafickou posloupnost antropogenních aktivit, a vedla tak k objasnění charakteru, provázanosti a datování vývojových forem vnějšího opevnění a osídlení ve zkoumané části budečského předhradí.
Velké Moravy – raně středověké „říše“, jež v době svého největšího rozkvětu politicky a kulturně ovládala nejen dnešní Moravu a Slovensko, ale významně ovlivňovala celou středovýchodní Evropu. The article presents a comprehensive archaeological-historical interpretation of the results of interdisciplinary research conducted in the lower Dyje (Thaya) River region in the Czech Republic in 2007–2012. In the ninth century this area belonged to the core of Great Moravia, an early medieval “empire” which at its peak not only enjoyed political and cultural control over today’s Moravia and Slovakia, but also significantly influenced the whole of central eastern Europe. Great Moravia collapsed suddenly at the beginning of the tenth century. The article attempts to clarify whether this collapse was as fatal as has been thought, how broad classes of the population reacted to this catastrophe, how development influenced the settlement structure and when the regeneration of society occurred.
Analýzy dále přinesly zjištění, že je nelze považovat za raně středověké, nýbrž za novověké až recentní výrobky patrně mimoevropského původu (Afrika?), nejspíš turistické suvenýry. and The subject of the investigation is a pair of bracelets from Nový Knín in the Příbram district, the first of which appeared in 1965, the second in 2014. In the past, the first bracelet was characterised as silver, with analogies in Scandinavian ring ornaments of the 10th–11th century AD. But when this bracelet was subjected to an elemental analysis XRF in 2008, it was found to be composed of an alloy of brass with an admixture of silver. Following the surprising discovery of the second bracelet, a series of scientific and archaeological-culturally anthropological analyses were conducted, the results of which led to a chronological and material re-evaluation of previously published data, including their ‘find’ contexts. The analyses indicate that the two ornaments are virtually identical and also reveal that they cannot be regarded as early medieval artefacts but rather as Modern to recent products that were likely made outside of Europe (Africa?), probably of a tourist souvenir
The study focuses on the early medieval large glass beads from the area of Poland, i.e. specimens whose diameter equals at least 1.5 cm but usually ca. 2 cm or more. The main aim of this study is to define their function, considering precise context of discovery of particular specimens, metric data and microscopic analyses. Another important task of the study is to determine whether large beads were local products or imports, and from which region and in what social circumstances they reached the studied area. Alongside macroscopic and stylistic features, chemical composition of glass that was used for production of the beads can be conclusive in this situation. In our opinion, it is a special category of finds that appeared in this part of Europe during the time of cultural and political transformation in the 11th–13th centuries. and Předmětem studie jsou polské nálezy raně středověkých velkých skleněných korálů, tj. exemplářů, jejichž průměr činí nejméně 1,5 cm, ale obvykle kolem 2 cm či více.
The graves of the Merovingian period in Central Europe show typical grave inventories which allow us to determine the sex (and not only the gender) of the buried persons with high accuracy. In the year 2000 a skeleton of the Alamannic cemetery of Niederstotzingen (Germany), which was equipped with weapons as a male component of the grave goods, was identified as female by DNA-analysis. This surprising result gave us a reason to investigate some skeletons of the Bavarian region, which seemed to be female by the morphology of the bones but also had weapons. We found no further ‘female warriors’, and recent investigations of the skeleton from Niederstotzingen carried out by other scholars have shown that it also belongs to a man. So we have no archaeological traces of women in the Early Middle Ages who filled the role as a warrior in life. This is also the case in view of the written sources. Surprisingly, in our Bavarian sample we found two persons with a male genotyp and beads from a necklace. These finds have to be interpreted with caution and we cannot be sure to find a proof of ‘cross-dressing’ in the Merovingian period. and Výbava hrobů merovejského období ve střední Evropě se vyznačuje charakteristickou kombinací předmětů, umožňující s vysokou pravděpodobností určit biologické pohlaví zesnulého.
Nález ukazuje na strategický význam širšího prostoru Moravské brány. and A luxurious equestrian bit with decorated bronze sidepieces and an iron centre part from the middle of the 10th century or slightly later was found near the early medieval stronghold near Stavenice in the Šumperk district. While this is the northernmost find of Hungarian origin in the Czech Republic, similar finds have been found as far away as in Polish Silesia. The find indicates the strategic importance of the broader area of the “Moravian Gate”.
Článek hodnotí výsledky systematických prospekcí s pomocí detektorů kovů z pomezí východních Čech a severozápadní Moravy za posledních patnáct let, doplněné o geofyzikální prospekci hradiště u Mařína. Dosavadní výzkum přinesl importy byzantského i karolínského původu (nákončí, průvlečka, hrot kopí) 7.–9. stol., nejpočetnější jsou lité ozdoby pozdně avarského typu z 8. století. Prostorová distribuce raně středověkých artefaktů mimo tradiční sídelní oblast vykazuje vazby na zaniklé komunikace, dochované v podobě úvozů. and The article evaluates the results of systematic metal detector surveys from the borderland between east Bohemia and northwest Moravia over the past fifteen years, supplemented with a geophysical survey of early medieval hillfort near Mařín (Svitavy district). The conducted surveys have produced imports of Byzantine and Carolingian origin (strap ends, loops, spear tip) from the 7th to 9th century, with cast ornaments of the Late Avar type from the 8th century occurring in the greatest numbers. The spatial distribution of early medieval artefacts outside the traditional settlement territory shows ties to defunct roads preserved in the form of sunken lanes.
This contribution is focused on the typological, material and technological study of a set of fifty five S-shaped temple rings found in the excavations of an early medieval cemetery in Vrbno (distr. Mělník). The goals of the study were to identify the different types of S-shaped temple rings present in the set, and to highlight the different techniques used in their manufacture. The temple rings were characterized by observation under optical stereomicroscope and scanning electron miscroscope (SEM), supplemented by the results of non-destructive analyses by X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and electron microanalysis (EDX). The results have shown that most of the temple rings were made of copper with small amounts of tin, lead and zinc although some were made of almost pure copper and a few of low zinc brass with some arsenic. Investigation also revealed that some temple rings were plated with tin, silver or gold. and Příspěvek je zaměřen na morfologické, materiálové a technologické studium souboru 55 záušnic nalezených na raně středověkém pohřebišti ve Vrbnu, okr. Techniky výroby byly určeny za pomoci optické steromikroskopie, elektronové rastrovací mikroskopie (SEM), složení kovů pak nedestruktivní rentgenofluorescenční analýzou (XRF) a elektronovou mikroanalýzou (EDX).
Aplikovány byly dvě hlavní metody EDX a hydrostatické stanovení hustoty kovu. Zjištěné výsledky jsou interpretovány v rámci současného numismatického diskursu. Stranou nezůstala ani diskuse o technických omezeních použitých metod a jejich věrohodnosti. and The article involves a material analysis of a unique assemblage of coins from the second half of the tenth century from the Kostice – Zadní hrúd site in the Czech Republic. The two main methods of EDX and hydrostatic weighing were employed, and the results are interpreted within the contemporary numismatic discourse. The credibility and technical limitations of the employed methods are likewise discussed.
