- Description:
- In a lecture given at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno as part of the "Days of Liechtenstein History in the Czech Republic" event, former Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the Czech Republic Ferdinand Trauttmannsdorff presented two projects by the Czech-Liechtenstein Commission of Historians. The first concerns the publication of „Fürstenhaus Liechtenstein – Böhmische Länder – Fürstentum Liechtenstein. Ad honorem Thomas Winkelbauer", which was published in the Studia Historica Brunensia journal. Authors from the Czech-Liechtenstein Commission of Historians have published a series of articles dealing with various aspects of the history of the Liechtenstein family and their ties to the Czech Lands, the history of the Principality of Liechtenstein, as well as with some more general topics from European history. The second topic presented was the publication of an English language version of the commission's "Summary Report of the Czech-Liechtenstein Commission of Historians", entitled "Czech-Liechtenstein Relations. Past and Present". The author of the lecture emphasized in particular the passages devoted to the places of Liechtenstein's memory and the construction of various historical stereotypes typical of Czech-Liechtenstein relations over the long run. He also emphasized some of the chances that, in his opinion, an improvement in Czech-Liechtenstein relations and the resolution of issues still considered as unresolved could bring in the future not only to both countries involved, but also to Europe as a whole.

43. Undermining the image of Austria-Hungary in the USA (1914–1915)
- Creator:
- Marcholeva, Krasimira
- Format:
- text/pdf
- Type:
- Article
- Subject:
- the USA, Austria-Hungary, wartime propaganda, the American periodical press, American public opinion, the Habsburg diplomacy, the Slav immigrants, diplomatic conflicts, Auxiliary Historical Sciences, and History
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- The paper explores the process of constructing the negative image of the Habsburg monarchy in the USA during the first year of WWI. My case study tackles an issue of transatlantic relations from the perspective of wartime propaganda. It is considered as one of the means of shaping the public opinion and influencing the policy decisions. In my presentation I will first evaluate the contribution of different actors involved in this process. Then I will assess the "response" of the Habsburg diplomacy to the propaganda campaign launched against the Danube monarchy. More precisely, I will explore not only the strategy their representatives developed, but will assess whether this strategy achieved its political ends or not. To put it simply, I will assess in what way the anti-Habsburg propaganda campaign in the USA influenced the relations between the USA and Austria-Hungary. In my paper I will rely mainly on the American periodical press, which, as contemporary Hungarian historiography points out, was an important factor in the American foreign policy.

44. When imagery is indispensable : illuminated charters in virtual space
- Creator:
- Gneiss, Markus and Zajic, Andreas H.
- Format:
- text/pdf
- Type:
- Article
- Subject:
- illuminated charters, art history, diplomatic, interdisciplinary studies, digital editing of charters, Auxiliary Historical Sciences, and History
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- While the study of medieval charters has an ample tradition in the big field of auxiliary sciences of history, the illumination contained in some of these sources has often been neglected. Also art-historians normally didn't take notice of the often prestigious combination of legal sources and artistic decoration. The present paper offers an interdisciplinary view on this widely ignored field of research and tries to distinguish between three large groups of illuminated charters that differ in their functions. Firstly, decorated charters – which are usually quite impressive due to their colorfulness and size – may contribute to the shaping of identity of a group of persons. Secondly, they can also serve as show pieces with the foremost aim of attracting the attention of beholders. Finally, the decoration can also help to increase the appeal and the value of the charter. The interdisciplinary project Illuminated Charters as "Gesamtkunstwerk", funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF (P26706-G21) and based in both Vienna and Graz, deals extensively with all three aforesaid types of illuminated charters and aims at providing an open access database within the framework of the virtual document archive monasterium.net, where several hundred charters should be introduced by way of a fully structured diplomatic and art historical description.
