Publikace vychází u příležitosti stého výročí založení Filozofické fakulty Masarykovy univerzity v Brně, jejíž nedílnou součástí byl od samých počátků seminář pro klasická studia. První část přináší pohled na dějiny klasických studií v Brně v širším kontextu historie fakulty a společenského dění vůbec, a to zejména prostřednictvím přímého svědectví archivních pramenů a vzpomínek pamětníků. Druhou část publikace tvoří reedice studie Františka Novotného, prvního ředitele semináře, Gymnasion aneb úvahy o řecké kultuře. Tato studie byla tiskem vydána naposledy v roce 1922. Odbornou i laickou veřejnost seznamuje s pojmy, na nichž, aniž si to uvědomujeme, stojí celá naše civilizace. ,This book is to be published on the occasion of 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno, of which the Seminary for Classical Studies has been an integral part from the very beginning. The first part of this book offers an overview of the history of the seminary in the wider historical context of whole the faculty and of Czechoslovak society, above all by means of the direct testimony of archive sources and the memories of witnesses. The second part of the book contains a re-edition of an important study by František Novotný, the first head of the seminary, entitled Gymnasion aneb úvahy o řecké kultuře (Gymnasium or Reflections on Greek Culture). This study, last published in 1922, acquaints scholars and laymen with ideas which, although we often do not realize it, form the basis of our civilisation.

Nová překladová publikace přináší další české překlady latinských spisů Jana Husa a navazuje tak na předchozí svazek (M. Jan Hus v polemice a za katedrou, 2015). Přináší české znění dvou dalších polemických spisů českého reformátora a drobné spisky, které Hus sepsal v kostnickém vězení; dva z nich byly převedeny do raně novověké češtiny, i tyto starší překlady podává kniha v podobě čtenářské edice. Dále je zde kritický traktát (Husovo autorství je nejisté) proti vícehlasu v církevním zpěvu, svazek uzavírají překlady básnických skladeb k Husově poctě ze 16. století. ,The new translation monograph offers several Czech translations of Latin treatises of Jan Hus. As a continuation of an earlier volume (Master Jan Hus in polemicising and lecturing, 2015) it brings Czech translations of two polemical writings of the Czech reformer as well as other minor treatises that Hus wrote while he was imprisoned in Constance. Two of these were already translated into early modern Czech and the book presents these older translations in a form of readers' edition. Moreover, the volume contains a critical tract against polyphony in church music (where Hus's authorship is doubtful) and translations of poems written in Hus’s honour in the 16th century.

Mistr Jan Hus je v této knize představen svými latinskými texty především jako polemik a univerzitní učitel. Z polemických spisů byl pro překlad zvolen projev proti Angličanu Johnu Stokesovi a tři traktáty proti prodeji odpustků. Z univerzitního působení Mistra Jana vzešlo několik promočních promluv, jsou zde podány ty, které dosud do češtiny překládány nebyly. Jsou zajímavé tím, že osobnost českého reformátora ukazují jinak, než jak o něm obvykle uvažujeme, a také svým svěžím jazykem a stylem. Vedle obou témat, která prozrazuje titul knížky, jsou zde dva texty teologického obsahu, ovšem s tehdy aktuálním společenským dosahem: kázání Jděte i vy na mou vinici a kvestie O třech pochybnostech. Texty jsou (s jedinou nepatrnou výjimkou) do češtiny přeloženy po prvé. ,We introduce Jan Hus through his Latin texts primarily as a polemicist and as a university teacher in this book. From the polemical writings, we chose his address against the Englishman John Stokes and also three treatises against the sale of indulgences. University activities of Master Jan are represented by several graduation speeches; here we chose those not yet translated into Czech. They are interesting not only for depicting the personality of the Czech reformer in a different way than we usually view him but also for their fresh language and style. In addition to the two topics revealed in the title of book, two other texts were selected as well. These are the texts of theological kind which however had a very topical dimension back then: the preaching 'Go ye also into the vineyard' and the discourse 'On three doubts'. All texts included (with just one minor exception) are translated into Czech for the first time.
