Metaschistura cristata is a small nemacheilid loach species found at a few localities only in Turkmenistan and Iran. The present study reports, for the first time, data on its biology, based on 747 specimens collected from the River Zanglanlou in north-eastern Iran. Specimens were collected at monthly intervals over two reproductive seasons from February to June 2007 and 2008. Maximum age, based on opercula readings, was 4+ years for both sexes. Specimens ranged in size from 25 to 87 mm total length and weighed from 0.09 to 4.91 g. Length-weight relationships implied positive allometric growth for both sexes and the sex ratio was 1 : 1.2 in favour of females. The Gonadosomatic indicated that peak reproduction occurred during April and May, with highest average values of 1.473 ± 0.99 for males and 12.9 ± 7.14 for females in April. Oocyte diameter ranged from 0.53 to 1.46 mm, with a mean value of 0.943 mm. Absolute and relative fecundity ranged between 114-1246 eggs and 79.47-1285.71 eggs/g, respectively. Absolute fecundity and oocyte diameter to fish size (length and weight) were directly correlated, while the relationship between relative fecundity and fish size (length and weight) showed an inverse power function.
The age-dependent changes in baroreflex control of heart rate were studied in inbred Dahl rats. At the age of 8 weeks the baroreflex slope was significantly greater in salt-resistant (R/Jr) than in salt-sensitive (S/Jr) rats fed a low- salt diet. The reverse was true in 16-week-old animals. High salt intake (8 % NaCI diet for 4 weeks) suppressed baroreflex efficiency in both age groups of S/Jr animals whereas no effects occurred in R/Jr rats. Baroreflex slope was, however, significantly lower in young S/Jr rats with a severe form of salt hypertension than in adult salt-loaded S/Jr rats in which only a moderate blood pressure elevation was observed.
The aim of the study was to investigate age-related changes in postural responses to platform translation with 3 various velocities. We focused on the influence of linear velocity using the smoothed profile of platform acceleration (till 100 cm.s−2 ). Eleven healthy young (20-31 years) and eleven healthy elderly (65-76 years) subjects were examined. The subjects stood on the force platform with their eyes closed. Each trial (lasting for 8 sec) with different velocity (10, 15, 20 cm.s−1 ) of 20 cm backward platform translation was repeated 4 times. We have recorded displacements of the centre of pressure (CoP) and the EMG activity of gastrocnemius muscle (GS) and tibialis anterior muscle (TA). The results showed increased maximal values of CoP responses to the platform translation. There was also observed a scaling delay of CoP responses to platform translation with different velocities in elderly. The EMG activity of GS muscle during backward platform translation was of about similar shape in both groups during the slowest platform velocity, but it increased depending on rising velocity. EMG activity of TA was not related to the platform velocity. Early parts of postural responses showed significant co-activation of TA and GS muscles of elderly. Certain aspects of balance control change with age, resulting in a slight postural instability. We examined healthy subjects between 20-82 years of age during the quiet stance under static conditions: at stance on a firm surface and/or on a compliant surface with eyes either open or closed. Body sway was evaluated from centre of foot pressure (CoP) positions during a 50 sec interval. The seven CoP parameters were evaluated to assess quiet stance and were analyzed in three age groups: juniors, middle-aged and seniors. The regression analysis showed evident increase of body sway over 60 years of age. We found that CoP parameters were significantly different when comparing juniors and seniors in all static conditions. The most sensitive view on postural steadiness during quiet stance was provided by CoP amplitude and velocity in AP direction and root mean square (RMS) of statokinesigram. New physiological ranges of RMS parameter in each condition for each age group of healthy subjects were determined. Our results showed that CoP data from force platform in quiet stance may indicate small balance impairment due to age. The determined physiological ranges of RMS will be useful for better distinguishing between small postural instability due to aging in contrast to pathological processes in the human postural control., D. In cases of human malaria, children suffer very high rates of morbidity and mortality. To analyze the mechanisms involved in age-dependent protection against malaria, we investigated the characterization of immune responses to Plasmodium yoelii 17XNL (P.y 17XNL) in young (3 weeks) and middle-aged (8 months) C57BL/6 mice. In this study, we found that 100% of young mice succumbed to P.y 17XNL infection with higher parasitemia, while middle-aged mice were able to clear blood parasites and no mortality was observed. These observations suggested that the young C57BL/6 mice were susceptible to P.y 17XNL infection, whereas the middle-aged mice were resistant. Cellular analysis revealed that both the numbers of splenic myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs) as well as the expression of DC maturation markers were higher in middle-aged mice than those in young mice. The numbers of IgG1- or IgG2a-secreting B cells increased markedly in middle-aged mice after infection with P.y 17XNL. The dynamic change of the number of CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) in mice infected with P.y 17XNL was also different between the two groups. In addition, the levels of IFN-γ and NO increased in both groups during early parasite infection, while there was also an obvious increase in IL-4 production in the infected middle-aged mice. The change in IL-10 levels following infection was consistent with that of the change in the number of Tregs. The survival of middle-aged mice following P.y 17XNL infection was dependent upon the establishment of effective Th1 and Th2 responses and a successful switch between Th1 and Th2 responses, as well as appropriate functioning of Tregs.
The ageing trajectory (trend in ageing) and reproduction-longevity trade-off in both sexes of the ladybird Propylea dissecta were studied. The ageing trajectories of both sexes were investigated in terms of reproductive performance, using initial oviposition (egg laying within 24 h of mating) acting as an indicator of the effect of female age and initial viability (percentage of eggs laid within 24 h of mating that hatched) of the effect of male age. Ageing trends were sex dependent, with reproductive performance declining later in females than in males. Initial oviposition of females was largely age dependent and the initial viability of males was age dependent but less so than for females. There is a strong trade-off between number of matings and longevity. Statistical analyses reveal that this trade-off results from an early onset of mortality rather than an increase in mortality rate. A minimum lifespan was observed in this ladybird beyond which the longevity did not further decline.
Concentrations of numerous hormones decrease with age. Some authors imply that a syndrome of partial endocrine deficiency may occur in the aging men. Among many lifestyle factors that influence hormonal status is physical activity. Especially interesting are relations between physical activity and the androgenic/estrogenic status of men. The aim of this study was to evaluate age-related changes of serum androgens, estradiol and SHBG in men presenting different levels of physical activity. Hormonal parameters were measured in a cohort of 387 healthy Caucasian men (aged from 24 to 72 years) from one administrative region of Poland. Their level of physical activity was determined by means of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). We have found that contrary to SHBG concentration, total testosterone, free testosterone, bioavailable testosterone, calculated free testosterone and estradiol were negatively associated with age in the investigated subjects. Apart from estradiol, physical activity did not influence concentrations of the studied parameters. In younger (24-48 years), physically active males estradiol was significantly higher than in subjects characterized by a low level of physical activity. The situation was opposite in older males (48-72 years). In this age group low level of physical activity was associated with lower concentration of estradiol. The relationship between possible alterations in the volume or distribution of extracellular fluid and the development of salt hypertension was studied in inbred salt-sensitive (SS/Jr) and salt-resistant (SR/Jr) Dahl rats. Blood pressure, cardiac and renal hypertrophy as well as body fluid volumes were determined in young and adult SS/Jr and SR/Jr rats of both sexes that were subjected to low, normal or high salt intake for various periods of time. Salt hypertension in young salt-sensitive rats fed a 4 % NaCl diet was not accompanied by any substantial intravascular or interstitial expansion as compared to salt-resistant rats that remained normotensive. There was no sex difference in the response of blood pressure or body fluids to high salt intake. Major expansion of plasma and blood volume, which was elicited by 8 % NaCl diet feeding from prepuberty, was not accompanied by a further blood pressure rise (compared to salt hypertensive SS/Jr rats fed 4 % NaCl diet). In conclusions, salt hypertension can occur in Dahl salt-sensitive rats without major salt and water retention. The degree of intravascular expansion is not directly related to blood pressure levels in salt-loaded Dahl rats. A high salt intake seems to exert its hypertensive effects in Dahl rats preferentially by influencing the balance of vasoconstrictor and vasodilator systems rather than by increasing the haemodynamically active intravascular volume.
We assessed the concentration of calcium, magnesium and creatinine in 2715 samples of the first morning urine. The investigation comprised the following age groups: children one, two, four, six, ten and thirteen years old, and groups of adults aged 18-35, 36-49, 50-65, 66-75, 76-85 and 86-93 years. The choice was made by random selection of participants of both sexes from diverse regions of the Czech Republic. We found the age to have a marked influence on the value of calcium, magnesium and creatinine, including urinary concentration ratios of calcium/creatinine and magnesium/crcatinine. The urinary calcium concentration was low both in the early and advanced age groups, while it reached peak values in subjects 18-35 years old. The urinary magnesium concentration was also age-dependent, with a maximum in children aged 4 years, and a subsequent decline with advancing age. The value of the ratio urinary calcium/creatinine and urinary magnesium/creatinine was highest in the youngest age group (1-4 years).
Quercetin, a polyphenolic compound present in various types of food, has been shown to exert beneficial effects in different cardiac as well as non-cardiac ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) models in adult animals. However, there is no evidence about the effects of quercetin on I/R injury in non-mature animals, despite the fact that efficiency of some interventions against I/R is agedependent. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of chronic quercetin treatment on I/R injury in juvenile and adult rat hearts. Juvenile (4-week-old) as well as adult (12-week-old) rats were treated with quercetin (20 mg/kg/day) for 4 weeks, hearts were excised and exposed to 25-min global ischemia followed by 40-min reperfusion. Functional parameters of hearts and occurrence of reperfusion arrhythmias were registered to assess the cardiac function. Our results have shown that quercetin improved post-ischemic recovery of LVDP, as well as recovery of markers of contraction and relaxation, +(dP/dt)max and -(dP/dt)max, respectively, in juvenile hearts, but not in adult hearts. Quercetin had no impact on incidence as well as duration of reperfusion arrhythmias in animals of both ages. We conclude that the age of rats plays an important role in heart response to quercetin treatment in the particular dose and duration of the treatment. Therefore, the age of the treated subjects should be taken into consideration when choosing the dose of quercetin and duration of its application in prevention and/or treatment of cardiovascular diseases., M.
