The influence of acute diabetes (8 days), induced by streptozotocin (45 mg.kg'1 body weight) on myocardial and renal antioxidative conditions was investigated. The animals were given subtherapeutical doses of insulin (Interdep 6 (J. kg'1 body weight, s.c.). Considerably increased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), as well as of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity were found in the myocardium of diabetic animals. The oxidized glutathione (GSSG) level and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) activity remained unchanged. The reduced glutathione (GSH) level as well as the activity of glutathione S-transferase (GST) were significantly lower. The activity of GSH-PX in the kidneys of diabetic rats increased by 60 % and that of GST by 105 %, respectively. CAT and SOD activity values were unchanged.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) plantlets were propagated in vitro and acclimated under different photosynthetic photon flux densities (60 and 250 µmol m-2 s-1 = LI and HI, respectively). Increases in chlorophyll (Chl) content and Chl a/b ratio were found under both irradiances. In vitro plantlets (day 0) exhibited a low photosynthesis, but chloroplasts from in vitro leaves contained well developed grana and osmiophillic globules. Photoinhibition in leaves formed in vitro was characterized by decrease of photochemical efficiency and quantum efficiency of photosystem 2 photochemistry in HI treatment during acclimation. The new leaves formed during acclimation in both treatments showed a higher photosynthetic capacity than the leaves formed in vitro. Also activities of antioxidant enzymes of micropropagated ginger plantlets changed during acclimation. and Q. Z. Guan ... [et al.].
Salt stress is one of the most critical factors hindering the growth and development of plants. Paclobutrazol (PBZ) is widely used to minimize this problem in agriculture because it can induce salt stress tolerance in plants. This study investigated the effects of PBZ on salt tolerance of seedlings from two Chinese bayberry cultivars (i.e., Wangdao and Shenhong). Plants were treated with three salt concentrations (0, 0.2, and 0.4 % NaCl) and two PBZ concentrations (0 and 2.0 μmol L-1). Application of PBZ increased a relative water content, proline content, chlorophyll (a+b) content, and antioxidant enzyme activities in both cultivars, resulting in a better acclimation to salt stress and an increase in dry matter production. We concluded that PBZ ameliorated the negative effects of salt stress in Chinese bayberry seedlings., Y. Hu, W. Yu, T. Liu, M. Shafi, L. Song, X. Du, X. Huang, Y. Yue, J. We investigated net photosynthetic rate and antioxidative enzyme activities in Erythrina orientalis grown in three different sites: Makati and Quezon (cities with high levels of air pollution, HP) and La Mesa (a non-polluted area, NP). Photosynthetic activity of E. orientalis was significantly reduced in the HP cities. In contrast, activities of the antioxidative enzymes ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase were significantly higher in HP cities than in the NP area. and S. Y. Woo, D. K. Lee, Y. K. Lee.
Six genotypes of taro (Colocasia esculenta L. Schott) were evaluated under in vitro and in vivo polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000)-mediated osmotic stress conditions. A significant variation in growth response was observed among the taro genotypes under in vitro-induced stress conditions. In vivo results indicated a significant effect of osmotic stress on photosynthetic parameters, such as net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, stomatal resistance, internal CO2 concentration, carboxylation efficiency, and transpiration efficiency on the tested genotypes at the tuberization stage. Lesser variations in photosynthesis and higher accumulation of proline, phenols, and antioxidative enzymes, namely, superoxide dismutase and guaiacol peroxidase, were associated with yield maintenance under osmotic stress conditions. The genotypes DP-89, IGCOL-4, and Ramhipur showed a higher degree of tolerance towards osmotic stress with a minimum variation in the studied parameters. These genotypes could be lines of interest for intensification of breeding strategies to develop drought-tolerant plants., M. R. Sahoo, M. Dasgupta, P. C. Kole, A. Low temperature during the vegetative stage affects rice (Oryza sativa L.) seed-setting rate in Heilongjiang province at Northeast China. However, little is known about changes of the photosynthetic rate and physiological response in contrasting rice cultivars during chilling periods. In this study, two rice cultivars with different chilling tolerance were treated with 15°C from June 27 to July 7. The chilling-susceptive cultivar, Longjing11 (LJ11), showed a significant decrease in a ripening rate and seed-setting rate after being treated for four days, whilst chilling-tolerant cultivar, Kongyu131 (KY131), was only slightly affected after 4-d treatment. The photosynthetic activities, chlorophyll contents, and antioxidative enzyme activities in LJ11 decreased significantly along with the chilling treatment. The decrease in ß-carotene contents might play a role as it could cause direct photooxidation of chlorophylls and lead to the inhibition of the photosynthetic apparatus. In the meantime, no significant damage was found in leaves of KY131 from June 27 to July 11. In conclusion, the chilling-tolerance mechanism of rice is tightly related to the photosynthetic rate, metabolism of reactive oxygen species, and scavenging system in the vegetative stage., L.-Z.
