Stále ještě neexistuje lepší vysvětlení než závěr, že lidé, kteří tyto odlišné postupy užívali, sami sebe nazývali Slovany. and The author presents the ideological system of the Old Slavs, which was used as the basis for comprehensive territorial units (župe), which gave the people their identity. The complex cooking system is also described. This appeared in the Balkans in the 7th and 8th centuries as a new system that was quite different from the previous system. There is still no better explanation for its appearance than that it was established by the people who named themselves Slavs.
Z politicko–správního hlediska je proto pravděpodobná jejich prvotní vazba na kouřimsko–kolínské „knížectví“. and THE EARLY MEDIEVAL KUTNÁ HORA REGION: THE CIMBURK AND SIÓN HILLFORTS. An overview of the evidence of Early Medieval settlement at two spur hill–forts on the Vrchlice river south of Kutná Hora. The first of these is Cimburk, a polycultural upland settlement occupied as early as the Eneolithic, where trenches dug in 1989–1990 revealed settlement features and fortifications (ditch and rampart) dated by ceramics to between the Early and beginning of the Late “Hill–fort” period. The second enclosure is that of Sión, on the site of the acropolis of which the Hussite Hetman Jan Roháč z Dubé built a castle, which was investigated in 1961–1964. The Early Medieval ceramics found here indicate long–term settlement from the Early to the Later and Final “Hill–fort” periods. The peripheral locations of the two sites in the Early Medieval ecumene, along with a certain remoteness from lines of long distance communication and the central places of the region, show that both probably fulfilled the role of refuges, alternating over time with short phases of stable settlement. Both lie on the western edge of the Čáslav region, which lay out of the Přemyslid demesne. From the politico–administrative perspective, it is thus likely that they were originally associated with the Kouřim/Kolín “principality”.
Tyto nově stanovené vývojové fáze hradby v prostoru u rotundy pak srovnávám s vývojem hradby ve Váňově řezu valem a předkládám zpřesněné chronologické schéma vývoje vnitřního budečského opevnění. Zároveň přibližuji keramický materiál, o nějž Váňa opřel datování vzniku první raně středověké hradby na Budči do přelomu 8./9. stol. a jejž nikdy nezveřejnil. and On the development of the inner defences at Budeč. The fortification of the inner area of the Budeč hillfort has been investigated independently by Z. Váňa and M. Šolle. Both authors place the development of the rampart at Budeč among those studies considering questions related to the Early Middle Ages. This contribution, then, demonstrates the differences in the evolution of the inner rampart apparent in the sections by Váňa and Šolle. The results are presented of a revision and reassessment of the Šolle’s investigation of the rampart at the Rotunda of SS Peter and Paul, which outlines a new interpretation of the development of the inner defences at Budeč. These newly established developmental phases in the area of the rotunda are then compared with the development of the defences in Váňa’s section through the rampart, and a more precise chronological scheme of the development of the inner defences is provided. In closing, the ceramic material on which Váňa based the dating of the first Early Medieval fortification at Budeč to the turn of the 8th/9th century, and which has not hitherto been published, is considered.
Výsledky probíhajících projektů a nedávných archeologických výzkumů vyvolaly nutnost aktualizovat dosud publikované poznatky o raně středověkém vývoji dnešní Malé Strany, území, kde se v raném středověku pod hradem přemyslovských knížat rozkládalo opevněné suburbium. Cílem příspěvku není vyčerpávající syntéza, ale stručná rekapitulace nynějšího stavu znalostí dějinných počátků této části historického jádra Prahy. Doplňuje ji bilance pramenné základny, přehled bádání a nástin používané metodiky terénní exkavace. and Participation in ongoing projects necessitated an update of information published to date on the Early Medieval development of Malá Strana [Lesser Town], an area below the Prague Castle of Přemyslid rulers where a fortified suburbium was located. The goal of this paper is to present a concise review of the latest knowledge regarding the historical beginnings of this micro-region of the historical centre of Prague. The review is supplemented by the source base, a summary of research and applied methodology for terrain excavations.
Zpracování rozsáhlého souboru keramiky přispělo k poznání produkce keramiky na jižní Moravě v období po zániku Velké Moravy až do sklonku raného středověku, zároveň se podařilo definovat základní vývojové fáze lokality. and The article provides a description and analysis of an assemblage of post-Great Moravian and Late Hillfort pottery from the Kostice – Zadní hrúd site in the lower Dyje region. The pottery assemblage was processed using the statistical analysis of data. The processing of the large pottery assemblage contributed to an understanding of pottery production in south Moravia in the period following the demise of Great Moravia up to the end of the Early Middle Ages; the basic development phases of the site were also defined.
To pochopitelně vyvolává úvahy o jeho funkci a historickém významu. and The early medieval stronghold in Libušín (district of Kladno, Central Bohemia) is an important archaeological site for a number of reasons, foremost of which is the stronghold’s position in the centre of Bohemia – a territory that is connected with the beginnings of the Přemyslid reign and therefore the origins of the Czech state. Large-scale excavations have also made Libušín one of the best investigated early medieval strongholds in Bohemia. Furthermore, Libušín is remarkable for the ingenious combination of several types of walls in the stronghold’s fortifications. As such, the site has traditionally attracted a great deal of professional interest. This article offers a new interpretation of key find situations and assemblages of artefacts, one that differs from earlier conclusions published at the beginning of the 1970s. Among other things, the author attempts to show that the stronghold in Libušín was not built at the turn of the 10th century as previously believed, but probably during the second third of the 10th century, at the earliest. This dating naturally raises new questions about the stronghold’s function and, hence, its historical importance.
Závěrem jsou porovnávány jednotlivé komponenty aglomerace – hrad, opevněné předhradí, jižní neopevněné předhradí a podhradí. and The current knowledge regarding Žatec in the Early Middle Ages. The submitted work provides a spatial demarcation of the early medieval Žatec agglomeration and addresses the development of this location. Due to the fact that the overwhelming majority of research has not yet been processed, the work approaches the subject in more general terms. The work likewise presents a chronology of early medieval ceramics at the site. Production pyrotechnical devices and archaeological minting artefacts from the 11th century are discussed in detail. The conclusion of the work offers a comparison of individual components of the agglomeration such as the castle, fortified bailey, the unfortified southern bailey, and the settlements below the castle.
This paper discusses the pottery finds from the 2003–2005 excavation of the settlement at Pellendorf/Gaweinstal in the central eastern area of the Weinviertel district in Lower Austria. The early medieval settlement was occupied from the 7th to the 10th centuries. The pottery finds from the 9th/10th century are characterised by shapes typical of the Mikulčice and Blučina pottery groups and of the March pottery in southern Moravia, and thus revealing intensive contact to the Great Moravian centres on the River March in that period. The paper also mentions further sites with the same pottery in northern Lower Austria, which, taken as a whole, indicate that in the 9th century the area was culturally, economically, and thus presumably also politically, closely connected to the Moravian Empire. and Výzkum sídlištní lokality Pellendorf/Gaweinstal ležící ve středu východní části oblasti Weinviertel (Dolní Rakousko) poskytl v letech 2003–2005 keramický materiál, který je diskutován v předložené studii. V celkovém pohledu tento nálezový inventář svědčí o úzkém kulturním, ekonomickém, a patrně i politickém propojení příslušných oblastí Dolního Rakouska s Velkou Moravou v 9. století.
Rámcové datování do 9.–10. stol. vyplývá z charakteru hrobových a sídlištních nálezů, přičemž významnou roli hraje keramika. In the years 1968 and 1976, the archaeological excavations at the site of Žabník, situated app. 500 m to the south of the perimeter wall of the central part of the Great Moravian castle of Mikulčice, revealed remains of an early medieval burial ground and settlement. According to vertical stratigraphy, the burial ground consisted of two phases and the settlement of just one. The approximate dating to 9th-10th century results from the nature of the grave and settlement finds. An important role is played by pottery. While the grave vessels bear witness of Great Moravian provenience, the settlement pottery is represented by typologically more advanced products of post-Great Moravian nature. Moreover, the settlement pottery represents a distinctive ceramic type with specific morphological and technological features that has not yet been documented within the Mikulčice agglomeration in a more numerous representation – that is why it has been preliminarily designated as the Žabník pottery type.
Sledovány jsou podíly značené keramiky, dále identické značky, jejich distribuce na lokalitě a konečně technologické vlastnosti výrobků, které pocházejí z téže dílny. and Maker’s marks on the bases of ceramic vessels from Stará Boleslav. The aim of this text is to make available a specific category of archaeological resource (ceramic maker’s marks) and to draw attention to the opportunities for the use of this resource in studying the history of pottery and the distribution of ceramics. One of the largest available assemblages is presented, that which was brought together in the Early Medieval castle at Stará Boleslav. The article considers the proportion of marked ceramics, as well as identity markers, their distribution over the site and lastly the technological properties of those products that came from these workshops.
