During a study on parasites of fish from cenotes (= sinkholes) in the Yucatan Peninsula, the following cestodes and acanthocephalans were found in 581 freshwater fish of 15 species: the cestodes Bothriocephalus acheilognathi Yamaguti, 1934, Bothriocephalus sp. (Bothriocephalidae), Nomimascolex sp. (Monticellidae), Proteocephalidea gen. sp. larv., Dendrouterina pa-pillifera (Fuhrmann, 1908) larv. and D. pilherodiae Mahon, 1956 larv. (Dilepididae), and the acanthocephalans Octospinifer-oides chandleri Bullock, 1957, Neoechinorhynchus golvani Salgado-Maldonado, 1978 (Neoechinorhynchidae), Polymorphus (syn. Arhythmorhynchus) brevis (Van Cleave, 1916) larv. (Polymorphidae), and an echinorhynchid larva. With the exception of B. acheilognathi, all tapeworms are found in Mexico for the first time; second-stage larvae of D. papillifera and D. pilherodiae from fish are reported for the first time.
Chimaerula bonai sp. n. is described from the small Intestine of Phimosus infuscatus (Lichtenstein) in Paraguay. The new species differs from the other two species of Chimaerula Bona, 1994, i.e., Chimaerula woodlandi (Prudhoe, 1960) and Chimaerula leonovi (Belogurov et Zueva, 1968), mainly by the intermediate number of rostellar hooks (30-34 compared to 42-46 in the former and 20-22 in the latter), longer rostellar hooks (31-34 pm versus 26 pm and 19-21 pm, respectively), shorter cirrus sac (58-82 pm versus 158-201 pm and 134-183 pm, respectively) and the absence of rosethorn spines in the cirrus armament. Modifications in the generic diagnosis of Chimaerula are proposed in order to conform it with some peculiarities of the new species (i.e., the relatively small and thin cirrus, the absence of rosethom spines in its armament and the small cirrus sac).
Dictyterina cholodkowskii (Skrjabin, 1914) is recorded from iMnius collurio L. in Bulgaria (new geographical record). The species is redescribed and figured. A full list of synonyms is presented; it includes, among the other synonyms, Deltokeras delachauxi Hsii, 1935 (new synonym), Biulerina passerina of Oshmarin (1963) and Paruterina parallelipipeda of Paspalev and Paspaleva (1972). A survey of published records characterizes D. cholodkowskii as limited to the Palaearctic in six species of the genus Lanius (Aves, Passeriformes, Laniidae).
Some digeneans and cestodes parasitic in a population of the white-faced ibis Plegadis chihi (Vieillot) from Buenos Aires province, Argentina, arc presented. The digeneans Dietziella egregia (Dietz, 1909), Patagifer bilobus (Rudolphi, 1819), Ascocotyle (Leighia) hadra Ostrowski de Núfiez, 1992 and Posthodiplostomum nanum Dubois, 1937 from the intestine; Prosthogonimus ovatus (Rudolphi, 1803) from the cloaca; Athesmia heterolecithodes (Braun, 1899) from the bile ducts and the cestode Hymenolepis megalops (Nilzsch in Crcplin, 1829) from the cloaca, were recorded. The discovery of D. egregia, P. ovatus, A. heterolecithodes and P. nanum constitute new host and/or new geographical records. Adults of A. (L.) hadra, previously described in experimental definitive hosts, are first reported from a naturally infected bird. Hymenolepis megalops, a cestode of Anseriformes is first reported from Ciconiiforines.
Four trypanorhynchs, Kotorella pronosoma (Stossich, 1901), Nybelinia cf. bisulcata (Linton, 1889), Nybelinia scoliodoni (Vijayalakshmi, Vijayalakshmi ct Gangadharam, 1996), and Dasyrhynchus pacificus Robinson, 1965 are reported for the first time from the Gulf, which is now known to harbour at least 34 different species. In addition to the range extension for the trypanorhynchs listed above, 21 new host records are reported involving 13 cestode species. Characters of the genus Kotorella Euzet et Radujkovic, 1989 are emended, Nybelinia narinari MaeCallum, 1917 is considered a junior synonym of Kotorella pronosoma (Stossich, 1901), and Heteronybelinia palliata (Linton, 1924) comb. n. is redescribed. The usefulness of the bulb ratio as a means to distinguish different tentaculariid species is discussed, and the importance of shallow water localities for the life cycle of trypanorhynch ccstodes is emphasised.
A new species of Nybelinia Poche, 1926, N. queenslandensis sp. n. (Cestoda: Trypanorhyncha) is described from sharks, Carcharhinus melanopterus (Quoy et Gaimard, 1824) from the coast of northeastern Queensland, Australia. Morphological features of the 46 known species of Nybelinia Poche, 1926 are tabulated and the new species is differentiated from all known taxa that are adequately described on the basis of having a homcomorphous armature, metabasal hooks 20-25 pm long, tentacles 0.07-0.09 mm in diameter, short bulbs (0.38-0.45 mm) and craspedote segments with the testes encircling the female genital complex. The fine structure of the scolex microtriches, frontal and rhynchodeal glands, tentacles and hooks, sheath and retractor muscle is described and compared with that of other trypanorhynchs.
Gangesia parasiluri Yamaguti, 1934 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) is redescribed on the basis of adults obtained from the intestine of Silurus asotus Linnaeus (Teleostei: Siluridae) from Lake Suwa, Nagano Prefecture, central Japan. Its life cycle was studied in the field and laboratory. Rostellar hooks of the adults showed a wide variation in number, ranging from 35 to up to 57. Plerocercoids were found in the rectum of Chaenogobius urotaenia (Hilgendorf) and Rhinogobius brunneus (Temminck et Schlegel) (Teleostei: Gobiidae) from the same lake. Procercoids were formed in the haemocoel of Mesocyclops leuckarti (Claus) (Copepoda: Cyclopidae) 7 days post infection at 21-25°C. They developed into plerocercoids in the intestine of Pseudorasbora puntila pumila Miyadi (Teleostei: Cyprinidae), R. brunneus and S. asotus. Plerocercoids from naturally and experimentally infected fishes were fed to S. asotus, from which immature worms were recovered. It is considered that the life cycle involves three hosts: a copepod as the intermediate host in which procercoids are formed, small fish as paratenic hosts which retain plerocercoids and transport them into S. asotus, and S. asotus as the definitive host in which adults develop. Rostellar hooks of the adults were much fewer, much larger and arranged in fewer circles than those of the plerocercoids. It is suggested that the former are newly formed and replace the latter in an early stage of development of plerocercoids into adults in 5. asotus.
The syntypes of Deltokeras omitheios Meggitt, 1927 (the type-species of Deltokeras Meggitt, 1927), a parasite of Urocissa erythrorhyncha (Passeriformes, Corvidae) in South Asia, are redescribed. Deltokeras is considered a monotypie genus. An amended generic diagnosis is presented.
Structural differences of microtriches and distal cytoplasm of the tegument in the apical and lateral suckers, scolex proper and neck of Proteocephalus macrocephalus (Creplin,1815) were studied. The microthrix border in the apical sucker is formed by filamentous microtriches only. The frontal and lateral parts of scolex bear mainly filamentous microtriches, but seldom short conoid types occur. The transitional zone between scolex and neck is covered mainly with short conoid microtriches. The neck bears blade-like microtriches. In the apical and lateral suckers, the basal plasma membrane of the distal cytoplasm adheres to the basal lamina at some points only, forming thus a lacunal system at the base of the sucker tegument. In the scolex proper and neck region, the basal plasma membrane of the tegument is connected continuously with the basal lamina. The distal cytoplasm is penetrated by two types of gland cell ducts and cibate sensory receptors. Possible functions of different parts of the microthrix border are discussed.
The proteocephalid tapeworm Proteocephalus torulosus (Batsch, 1786) exhibited a marked seasonality in its occurrence and maturation in barbel (Barbus harhus L.) from the Jihlava River, South Moravia, Czech Republic. Recruitment took place in winter and early spring, growth and maturation in spring and gravid worms left the fish hosts in May; during summer and autumn, the parasite was almost absent from the fish population. Parasite burden was related to fish size, with larger barbel being more heavily infected than smaller ones.
