2. Cenotes (sinkholes) of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, as a habitat of adult trematodes of fish

- Examination of a total of 581 fish specimens of 15 species from 39 cenotes (sinkholes) in the Yucatan Peninsula, southeastern Mexico, revealed the presence of 10 species of adult trematodes. These were as follows: Saccocoelioides sogandaresi Lumsden, 1963, Saccocoelinides sp. (family Haploporidae), Cichlasotrema ujati Pineda et Andrade, 1989 (Angiodictyidae), Crassicutis cichlasomae Manter, 1936 (Homalometridae), Magnivitellinum simplex Kloss, 1966 (Macroderoididae), Stunkardiel-la minima (Stunkard, 1938) (Acanthostomidae), Oligogonotylus manieri Watson, 1976 (Cryptogonimidae), Genarchella tropica (Manter, 1936), G. astyanactis (Watson, 1976), and G. isabellae (Lamothe-Argumedo, 1977) (Derogenidae). Saccocoelioides sogandaresi is reported from Mexico for the first time. Poecilia velifera and P. latipunctata for S. sogandaresi, Cichlasoma octo-fasciatum for C. cichlasomae, Cichlasoma friedrichslahli and C. meeki for O. manieri, and C. meeki, C. octofasciatum and Go-hiomorus dormitor for C. isabellae represent new host records. - During a study on parasites of fish from cenotes (= sinkholes) in the Yucatan Peninsula, the following cestodes and acanthocephalans were found in 581 freshwater fish of 15 species: the cestodes Bothriocephalus acheilognathi Yamaguti, 1934, Bothriocephalus sp. (Bothriocephalidae), Nomimascolex sp. (Monticellidae), Proteocephalidea gen. sp. larv., Dendrouterina pa-pillifera (Fuhrmann, 1908) larv. and D. pilherodiae Mahon, 1956 larv. (Dilepididae), and the acanthocephalans Octospinifer-oides chandleri Bullock, 1957, Neoechinorhynchus golvani Salgado-Maldonado, 1978 (Neoechinorhynchidae), Polymorphus (syn. Arhythmorhynchus) brevis (Van Cleave, 1916) larv. (Polymorphidae), and an echinorhynchid larva. With the exception of B. acheilognathi, all tapeworms are found in Mexico for the first time; second-stage larvae of D. papillifera and D. pilherodiae from fish are reported for the first time.

4. Larval stages of trematodes from freshwater molluscs of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

- Examination of 4055 molluscs of 10 species from cenotes (= sinkholes) and other freshwater bodies in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico revealed the presence of-larval stages of 13 trematodes. The following species were found: Echinochasmus leopoldinae Scholz, Ditrich et Vargas-Vázquez, 1996, E. macrocaudatus Ditrich, Scholz et Vargas-Vázquez, 1996 (Echi-nostomatidae), Saccocoelioides sp. (? sogandaresi Lumsden, 1963) (Haploporidae), Crassicutis cichlasomae Manter, 1936, pleurolophocercous ophthalmocercaria sp. (Homalometridae), Ascocotyle (Ascocotyle) sp., Ascocotyle (Phagicola) nana Ransom, 1920 (Heterophyidae), Oligogonotylus manieri Watson, 1976 (Cryptogonimidae), Genarchella astyanactis (Watson, 1976) (Derogenidae), xiphidiocercariae sp. 1, 2 and 3 (Lecithodendriidae?), and furcocercaria gen. sp. (Fellodistomidae). The life-cycle of the derogenid Genarchella astyanactis was studied for the first time. It was found that it differs from that of G. genarchella: the first intermediate host, Pyrgophorus coronatus (Pfeiffer, 1839), released cystophorous furcocercariae of G. astyanactis that developed, after ingestion by the second intermediate host, copepods (experimentally Mesocyclops chaci Fiers, Reid, Ilife et Suárez-Morales, 1996), into metacercariae resembling by their morphology juvenile trematodes found in the stomach of Aslya-nax fasciatus. No progenetic cercariae (metacercariae) found in G. genarchella were observed in the life-cycle of G. astyanactis. Rediae and cystophorous furcocercariae were recovered from naturally infected snails and snails experimentally kept in contact with eggs from the uterus of G. astyanactis adults.

- The paper presents a survey of the metacercariae of trematodes found in 581 fishes of 15 species from 39 cenotes (sinkholes) of the Yucatan Peninsula, southeastern Mexico. - This paper comprises a systematic survey of larval nematodes collected from fishes from cenotes (= sinkholes) of the Peninsula of Yucatan, southern Mexico, in 1993-1994. Larvae of the following nine species were recorded: Physocephalus sexa-lalus, Acuariidae gen. sp., Spiroxys sp., Falcausira sp., Hysterothylacium cenotae, Contracaecum sp. Type 1, Contracaecum sp. Type 2, Goezia sp., and Eustrongylides sp. Larvae of P. sexalatus are recorded from fishes (Rhamdia guatemalensis) for the first time. The larvae are briefly described and illustrated and problems concerning their morphology, taxonomy, hosts and geographical distribution are discussed. Adults of these larvae are parasitic in piscivorous fishes, reptiles, birds and mammals (definitive hosts). Fishes harbouring the larvae of these parasites serve as paratenic hosts, being mostly an important source of infection for the definitive hosts.

- The present paper comprises a systematic survey of adult nematodes collected from fishes from cenotes (= sinkholes) of the Peninsula of Yucatan, southeastern Mexico, in 1993-1994. Examinations of a total of 533 fishes (17 species) originating from 39 cenotes from the Mexican states of Yucatan and Quintana Roo revealed the presence of the following nine nematode species: Rhabdochona (Rhabdochona) kidderi, Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) rebecae, P. (S.) neacaballeroi, Philome-trnides caudata, Hysterothylacium cenotae, Pseudocapillaria yucatanensis, Paracapillaria rhamdiae, P. teixerafreitasi and Capillostrongyloides sp. (only females). Four species (R. kidderi, P. rebecae, P. neacaballeroi and Capillostrongyloides sp.) are briefly described and illustrated and some problems concerning their morphology, taxonomy, hosts and geographical distribution are discussed. Taxonomic changes include Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) neacaballeroi (Caballero-Deloya, 1977) comb. n. and Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) rebecae (Andrade-Salas, Pineda-López ct Garcfa-Magana, 1994) comb. n. The nematode fauna of fishes in cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula shows its appurtenance to the Neotropical fauna with close affinities with that of fish nematodes from South America, but with a considerable degree of endemism.

8. Philometroides caudata sp. n. (Nematoda: Philometridae) from Rhamdia guatemalensis (Pisces) in Yucatan, Mexico

- A new nematode species, Philometroides caudata sp.n., is described from the swimbladder (under the serosa cover) of the freshwater pimelodid catfish, Rhamdia guatemalensis, from cenotes (— sinkholes) in Yucatan, southeastern Mexico. It differs from all hitherto known members of the genus, except P. maplestoni (Travassos, Artigas et Pereira, 1928), in having the functional anus, the conical tail with a terminal knob-like structure and the oesophagus without an anterior inflation in female, and in the structure of the caudal end in male. It can be distinguished from P. maplestoni (described only from females) by the extent of embossed cuticle, the size of body and the host type. P. caudata, representing a Neotropical element, is the first Philometroides species reported from freshwater fishes in Mexico.

- A new nematode species, Pseudocapillaria yucatanensis sp. n., is described from the intestine of the freshwater pimelodid catfish Rhamdia guatemalensis (Günther) from cenotes (= sinkholes) in Yucatan, Mexico. It differs from other three related species parasitizing freshwater fishes mainly in possessing the spicule with a simple rim of its proximal end and a non-expanded distal end, in the length of the spicule (0.218-0.295 mm), and the size (0.050-0.060 x 0.025-0.030 mm), shape and structure of eggs, and also in the host types and geographical distribution. Pseudocapillaria yucatanensis is the first known autochtonous species of Pseudocapillaria parasitizing freshwater fishes in Mexico.

10. Some helminth parasites from Morelet's crocodile, Crocodylus moreletii, from Yucatan, Mexico

- An examination of three specimens of the Morelet's crocodile, Crocodylus moreletii Duméril et Bibron, from the Lagoon of Celestún, Yucatan, Mexico revealed the presence of the following eight helminth species: Acanthostomum americanum (Pérez Vigueras, 1956), Pelaezia loossi (Pérez Vigueras, 1956), Telorchis sp. juv., Pseudoneodiplostomum groschafti sp. n. (all trematodes), Dujardinascaris helicina (Molin, 1860), Contracaecum sp. Type 2 larvae, Micropleura sp. and Paratrichosoma recurvum (Solger, 1877) (all nematodes). Pseudoneodiplostomum groschafti sp. n. is established by indication based on the description of specimens from Crocodylus rhombifer from Cuba, given by Groschaft and Baruš (1970). Acanthostomum acuti Caballero et Brennes, 1959 is considered a synonym of A. americanum. A. americanum and D. helicina are recorded for the first time from Mexico and Micropleura sp. is the first American representative of the genus recorded outside South America. Findings of A. americanum, Telorchis sp., P. groschafti, D. helicina and Micropleura sp. in C. moreletii represent new host records. Some observations on the early development of D. helicina are provided. All species, except for P. recurvum, are briefly described and illustrated and some problems concerning their morphology, taxonomy and geographical distribution are discussed.
