- Analysis of benchmark height changes along national 1st order precise levelling lines crossing the Middle Odra Fault Zone in the Wroclaw area has been presented in this paper. The zone separates Fore-Sudetic Block from the Fore-Sudetic Monocline and is one of the main geological structures in Lower Silesia. Five national precise levelling lines cross the research area: Ząbkowice Śląskie - Wrocław, Syców - Wrocław, Karczów - Wrocław, Kawice - Wrocław oraz Krotoszyn - Wrocław. These levelling lines were measured in 1956-58, 1975-80 and 1999. Changes of benchmark heights have been presented in comparison with geological cross-sections made along the levelling lines. - Receptor pro konečné produkty pokročilé glykace hraje významnou roli v rozvoji chronických diabetických komplikací. Ukazuje se, že zasahuje více či méně do všech typů diabetické angiopatie. Hlavním jeho ligandem jsou samotné konečné produkty pokročilé glykace (AGEs), které se ve vyšší míře u diabetiků akumulují, ale v posledním desetiletí jsou známy i silnější aktivátory tohoto receptoru, tzv. alarminy. Ty se jinak uplatňují v rozvoji zánětlivé reakce organizmu. Aktivovaný RAGE spouští kaskádu dějů vedoucích k dalšímu hromadění AGEs a kyslíkových radikálů, a navíc je cestou NF-κB iniciována chronická zánětlivá odpověď organizmu. Centrální úloha RAGE v patogenezi cévních změn dělá z tohoto receptoru slibné místo možného budoucího terapeutického či preventivního zásahu. It is supposed to be involved in the development of all kinds of diabetic angiopathy. Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) excessively accumulated in diabetes belong to the most important ligands of RAGE, however there are more potent activators of this receptor – especially alarmins, often involved in inflammatory reactions. Activated RAGE triggers pathways leading to excessive accumulation of AGEs, reactive oxygen species and sustained inflammatory reactions via NF-κB. Central role of RAGE in the pathogenesis of vascular changes in diabetes represents suitable target for new therapeutic or preventive approach. - Melanom vulvy je druhým nejčastějším zhoubným nádorem zevních rodidel. Oproti kožnímu melanomu je jeho záchyt pozdější a prognóza horší. V managementu časných stadií melanomu vulvy je rozhodující adekvátní chirurgický výkon na vulvě i spádových lymfatických uzlinách, u pozdních stadií je léčba často paliativní, léčebné režimy je nutno stanovit individuálně. It is usually diagnosed later and it’s prognosis is worse compared to skin melanoma. Adequate surgical procedure both at the vulva and regional lymphatic nodes is essential in early stages of vulvar melanoma whereas individual regimen with palliative intent is common in late stages. - Tranzitorní globální amnézie (TGA) je charakterizována náhlým vznikem těžké anterográdní amnézie a absencí dalších fokálních neurologických příznaků. I když je TGA většinou považována za monofázické onemocnění, recidivující průběh není raritní. Etiopatogeneze recidivujících případů nebyla většinou systematicky hodnocena. Cílem naší práce je posouzení výskytu a možných etiopatogenetických faktorů recidivující TGA. V průběhu pěti let bylo na naší klinice hospitalizováno 55 pacientů s TGA, z toho u čtyř (7,3 %) šlo o recidivující formu onemocnění. Jednotlivé případy prezentujeme formou kazuistik. Naše práce poukazuje na skutečnost, že výskyt recidivující TGA není vzácný a v našem souboru (7,3 %) odpovídá literárním údajům. Recidivy se mohou vyvinout v období několika měsíců až let od první ataky. Etiopatogeneze se zřejmě neliší od nerecidivujících forem TGA. Prokázali jsme možnou souvislost s migrénou a vaskulární příčinou kardioembolické geneze. U žádného z pacientů nebyla prokázána souvislost s epilepsií, anamnéza nepodporovala familiární výskyt., Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterized by sudden onset of severe anterograde amnesia and absence of other focal neurological deficits. Although TGA is usually considered as monophasic disease, recurrence is not rare. Etiopathogenesis of recurrent cases has not yet been systematically evaluated. The aim of our study is to evaluate occurrence and pathophysiological factors of recurrent TGA. Within five years, 55 patients with TGA were admitted to our clinic, four of which (7.3%) presented with the recurrent form. All recurrent cases are presented as case reports. Our series showed that the incidence of recurrent TGA is not rare and, in our group (7.3%), corresponds to the reported data. Relapses can develop within several months up to several years after the first attack. Etiopathogenesis is probably the same as in non-recurrent forms of TGA. We considered possible association with migraine and vascular cardiac embolic origin. We did not find any association with epilepsy and the patient histories did not support familial occurrence. - Výskyt recidiv gynekologických maligních nádorů závisí na mnoha faktorech, jako je rozsah primárního nádoru, jeho biologické vlastnosti a radikalita provedené terapie. Jejich léčba je vždy složitější a možnost kurability závisí nejen na velikosti recidivy, jejím uložení, celkovém stavu pacientky, ale zejména na předchozí prodělané terapii. U každé pacientky je třeba stanovit individuální léčebný plán, v němž se uplatňuje chirurgie, radioterapie, chemoterapie a velmi často kombinace těchto metod. Poměrně vysoké procento recidiv gynekologických malignit je vyléčitelné., Malignant gyneacological tumors recurrence rate depends on many factors. Most significant ones are primary tumor volume, its biological properties, and radicality of performed therapy. Relapses treatment is always more and more difficult and possibility of recovery depends not only on size of local relapse, its deposition, and patient‘s condition, but especially on previously performed therapy. Treatment plan has to be created for every patient individually, in which surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and most frequently a combination of all these methods are considered. - Sepsis is a life threatening condition that arises when the body's response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs. Sepsis can lead to shock, multiple organ failure and death especially if not recognized early and treated promptly. Molecular mechanisms underlying the systemic inflammatory response syndrome associated with sepsis are still not completely defined and most therapies developed to target the acute inflammatory component of the disease are insufficient. In this s tudy we investigated a possibility of combating sepsis in a mouse model by intravenous treatment with recombinant human tissue non - specific alkaline phosphatase (rhTNAP) derived from transgenic rabbit milk. We induced sepsis in mice by intraperitoneal inje ction of LPS and three hours later treated experimental group of mice by intravenous injection with rhTNAP derived from transgenic rabbits. Such treatment was proved to be physiologically effective in this model, as administration of recombinant rhTNAP suc cessfully combated the decrease in body temperature and resulted in increased survival of mice (80 % vs. 30 % in a control group). In a control experiment, also the administration of bovine intestinal alkaline phosphatase by intravenous injection proved to be effective in increasing survival of mice treated with LPS. Altogether, present work demonstrates the redeeming effect of the recombinant tissue non -specific AP derived from milk of genetically modified rabbits in combating sepsis induced by LPS., B. 3818. Reconstructing a 55-million-year-old butterfly (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae)

- The oldest butterfly fossil known, which was formed about 55 Ma in what is now Denmark, is described. The fragments of its forewing venation indicates it belongs to the Hesperiidae. Further reconstruction indicates that it fits in the Coeliadinae and is close to the extant genera Hasora and Burara. It is here described as Protocoeliades kristenseni gen. et sp. n. It is the first butterfly fossil found on a continent (Europe) where its closest relatives do not currently occur. - The effect of antigenic bacterial lysate IRS-19 on the recovery of blood cells was studied in mice injured by a single dose of 7 Gy irradiation. The preirradiation administration of IRS-19 accelerated the recovery of leukocytes, reticulocytes and platelets in peripheral blood. - Red palm oil (RPO) is a rich natural source of antioxidant vitamins, namely carotenes, tocopherols and tocotrienols. However, it contains approximately 50 % saturated fatty acids the regular consumption of which could negatively modify lipid profile. The aim of our study was to test whether 7 weeks of RPO supplementation (1 g/kg body weight/day) would affect blood glucose and lipid metabolism in adult male Wistar rats with altered thyroid status. We induced hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism in rats by oral administration of either methimazole or mixture of thyroid hormones. Different thyroid status (EU - euthyroid, HY - hypothyroid and HT - hyperthyroid) was characterized by different serum thyroid hormones levels (total and free thyroxine and triiodothyronine), changes in the activity of a marker enzyme of thyroid status - liver mitochondrial glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, and altered absolute and relative heart weights. Fasting blood glucose levels were higher in HT rats in comparison with EU and HY rats, but the changes caused by RPO supplementation were not significant. The achievement of the HY status significantly increased serum levels of total cholesterol, as well as with high-density lipoproteincholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol: 2.43±0.15, 1.48±0.09, 0.89±0.08 mmol/l, compared to EU: 1.14±0.06, 0.77±0.06, 0.34±0.05 mmol/l and HT: 1.01±0.06, 0.69±0.04, 0.20±0.03 mmol/l, respectively. RPO supplementation did not increase significantly levels of blood lipids but tended to increase glutathione levels in the liver.
