In order to elucidate the drought resistance and high-yield mechanism of hybrid millet, we studied the influence of drought stress on the photosynthetic characteristics and dry matter accumulation. Our results revealed that drought stress caused lesser reduction in the net photosynthetic rate, maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, excitation energy capture efficiency of PSII reaction centers and in the yield of hybrid millet compared to normal millet. When drought stress occurred in the jointing stage, the percentage decrease of PN, Fv/Fm, Fv′/Fm′, and the yield of Zhangzagu3 cultivar compared to control were 27.9%, 2.6%, 25. 5%, and 1.9%, respectively, the percentage decrease of Zhangzagu5 were 37.6%, 3.9%, 28.3%, and 16.7%, respectively, the decrease percentage of Datong29 were 60.1%, 6.4%, 4%, and 23.4%, respectively. Hybrid millet showed the similar reduction in the parameters referred above, when drought stress occurred at the heading stage, but the percentage decrease was much higher than that at the jointing stage. We concluded that hybrid millet showed higher drought resistance than normal millet., H. B. Lu, Y. M. Qiao, X. C. Gong, H. Q. Li, Q. Zhang, Z. H. Zhao, L. L. Meng., and Obsahuje bibliografii
We have found that short-term statin treatment plus stem cell transplantation in acutely infarcted hearts improves cardiac function because statins promote the efficacy of cellular cardiomyoplasty. Autologous Sca-1+ LinCD45- (CXCR+ ) very small embryonic-like stem cell (VSEL) mobilization in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) correlates with the preservation of cardiac function. Whether short-term atorvastatin (Ator) can enhance the mobilization or recruitment of VSELs in AMI is still unclear. We divided mice into 4 groups: 1) sham; 2) AMI; 3) AMI+resveratrol (RSV) as a positive control; and 4) AMI+Ator. There was an increase in the circulating VSEL/full population of leukocytes (FPL) ratio 48 hours after AMI, and AMI+RSV increased it further. Ator administration did not increase the VSEL/FPL ratio. The cardiac stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) and SDF-1α levels were in agreement with the results of VSEL mobilization. One week after AMI, more Sca-1+ CXCR+ cells were recruited to the myocardium of AMI+RSV mice but not AMI+Ator mice. Short-term Ator administration failed to upregulate cardiac SDF-1 and could not enhance the recruitment of VSELs early after AMI., H. Wang ... [et al.]., and Obsahuje seznam literatury
Water-withholding for 5 to 7 weeks and subsequent re-watering were made on potted plants of two epiphytic (E) and two terrestrial (T) fern species, which were collected from a seasonal tropical rainforest and had been grown in a screenhouse with 5 % irradiance for 4 months. During the water stress, the two E species completely closed stomata when frond relative water content (RWC) reached about 70 % with fairly constant maximum photochemistry efficiency (Fv/Fm), while the two T species kept partial stomata opening until RWC reached 45 % and reduction in Fv/Fm at the late stage. Also, chlorophyll content as indicated by a spectral reflectance index was gradually reduced in three species. Physiological recovery was completed after 3-d re-watering for the E species, which was more rapid than for the T species. The gas exchange measurements and regression analyses indicated higher photosynthetic water use efficiency in the E species than in the T species. and Q. Zhang ... [et al.].
Low temperature (LT) is one of the major factors that limit crop production and reduce yield. To better understand the cold-tolerance mechanism in the plantains, a sensitive cultivar Williams (Musa acuminata AAA cv. Williams) and a tolerant cultivar Cachaco (Musa paradisiaca ABB cv. Dajiao) were used. LT resulted in increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content, elevated contents of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide radical (O2.-), and decreased photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) and net photosynthetic rate (PN), but cv. Cachaco showed better LT tolerance than cv. Williams. After LT treatment for 120 h, total scavenging capability (DPPH. scavenging capability) in Williams showed a significant decrease but no significant alternations was found in Cachaco. Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and peroxidase (POD) displayed a significant increase but superoxide dismutase (SOD) showed no significant alternations and catalase (CAT) showed a significant decrease in Cachaco after 120 h of LT treatment. All the four antioxidant enzymes above showed a significant decrease in Williams after 120 h of LT treatment. Our results suggest that higher activities of APX, POD, SOD, and DPPH. scavenging capability to a certain extent can be used to explain the higher cold tolerance in the plantain, which would provide a theoretical guidance for bananas production and screening cold-resistant variety. and Q.
