2. Bear diet, seasonality and migration based on chemical multielemental teeth analysis

- Lase Induced Brakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) were utilized for microspatian nallyses of a fossil bear (Ursus arctos) tooth dentine. The distribution of selected trace elemnts (Sr, Ba, Fe) was measured on a 26 mm x 15 mm large and 3 mm thick transversal cross section of canine tooth, The Na and Mg content together with the distribution of matrix elemnts (Ca, P) was aslo monitored within this area. It is shown that LIBS, similarly to LA-ICP-MS can be successfully utilized for fast, spatially-resolved analysis of fossi teeth samples. Rate of Sr and Ca, Sr and Ba tracers were recognized and it is possible to say, thet these elemnts are changing its concentration in according to the seasonal increments of dentine. The concetration is lower in winter, when the bear is in his hibernation, contrary to summe, which is affuent for its substances. Secondly,concentration of Sr. shows us a seasonal migration between the place of hibernating and territory where bear searched for feed. From measurement of concentrations it is possible to claim, that the bear was hunted in his season of searching for feed, when he was ensuring his fat reserfe for winter. - Linear Band Pottery (LBK), Stroked Pottery (SPC), Moravian Painted Ware (MPWC) cultures developed in Moravia during the Neolithic period. Based on the currently available radiocarbon dates, this period lasted for 1800 years. The LBK lasted for 550 years and the MPWC for 1150 years. There is a 100 year hiatus between these cultures, when Moravia was inhabited by people practicing the SPC. With increasing knowledge and more radiocarbon dates, it has become apparent that the current ideas about the development of the Neolithic need revision due to discrepancies between the traditional scheme and new empirical data. - The Moravian-Silesian Prehistoric Branch of the Archaeological Institute AV ČR, Brno, v. v. i. has a long-term research interest in lithic chipped industries of the Late Stone Age and the Early Bronze Age in Moravia and Czech Silesia. Presently, a very important research focus is a lithic collection from the fortified Eneolithic hillfort Starý Zámek near Jevišovice. There are 474 knapped artifacts in the collection, including pieces collected from the surface and from excavations by J. Palliardi. One third of the artifacts are linked to cultural layers C, C2, C1 and B. Seventy pieces were published by Anna Medunová. At least 74 of the artifacts excavated by J. Palliardi have been recently identified in the collection deposited at the Moravian Museum. The assemblage includes a variety of endscrapers, blades, and borers as well as some cores. Tools of the Krummesser type from layer B and a bifacially retouched artifact (dagger or sickle fragment) from Bavarian tabular chert (Plattensilex) are of particular interest. Most artifacts were produced from local rocks (cherts of the Krumlovský les type and weathering products of serpentinite), although silicites from glacial sediments and chert of the Stránská skála type have also been identified. The presence of Bavarian Plattensilex (at least two artifacts) and rocks sourced from Poland (silicites from Cracow-Częstochowa Jurassic Upland and the spotted chert of the Świeciechów type). Two Palaeolithic artifacts are a surprising discovery. - The Moravian Painted Ware Culture settlement in Slavíkovice “Ostánce“ represents one of the most elaborately excavated sites in the peripheral area of western Moravia. The microregion is situated in the foothills of the Czech-Moravian Highlands at a relatively high altitude. More than forty MPW Culture sites have been recorded, mostly corresponding to its younger phase. The current study presents the results of recent surface surveys as well as minor detective and rescue probing. Apart from the large number of finds, a radiocarbon date has assisted in placing the site within the absolute chronology framework of the Moravian MPW Culture (Kuča et al. 2012). A detailed analysis of the archaeological findings allowed comparisons to other similarly dated sites in the area of interest and with the other peripheral regions in south-western Moravia (Bartík 2014a, 22, fig. 6).
