- Language:

- Description:
- The text sums up the conclusions of the author’s sociolinguistic investigations conducted (particularly in the form of questionnaires) in years 1996-2001 and published in the monograph Sprachverhalten und ethnische Identität. Sorbische Schüler an der Jahr tausendwende (Language Attitudes and Ethnic Identity. Sorbian Students at the Turn of the Millennium) in 2005. Investigations were carried out at many Sorbian schools in Upper Lusatia and were aimed at ethnic awareness of the students, their choice/use of Sorbian or German, attitude to both languages, and reception of culture among young Sorbs aged 11-19. The author mainly focused on the Sorbian Grammar School in Bautzen (Budyšin in Sorbian). In order to make the generalisation of the acquired outcomes possible, analogical surveys were also conducted at lower secondary schools in the villages of Crostwitz/Chrósćicy, Ralbitz/Ralbicy, Panschwitz-Kuckau/Pančicy-Kukow, Räckelwitz/Worklecy, Radibor/ Radwor, and in the municipality of Bautzen/Budyšin. The findings presented, analyzed and interpreted in the páper can, to a great degree, be in general applied to the present-day young Sorbian population as a whole. Simultaneously, they yield data for possible comparisons with the situation of other minority ethnic groups in Europe (e.g. the Welsh, the Romansh, Breton...).

- Groundwater quality, irrigation, GIS, Bangladesh, kvalita podzemných vôd, závlahy, and Bangladeš
- Language:

- Description:
- About 75% of water for irrigation in Bangladesh comes from groundwater. As the crop yield is directly related to quality of water used for irrigation, an assessment of groundwater suitability for irrigation is essential for the growth of food production and poverty eradication. An attempt has been made in this paper to study the suitability of groundwater for irrigation in Bangladesh. Geographic information system (GIS) is used for the processing of groundwater quality data collected from 113 locations sporadically distributed over the country and the preparation of groundwater quality maps. The result shows that groundwater of the southwestern part of Bangladesh, which comprises 22.5% area of the country, is highly affected by salinity and sodium hazards. Groundwater in 10.54% area of the country is also contaminated by Arsenic above the permissible level recommended for irrigation. and Okolo 75 % vody pre závlahy v Bangladeši pochádza z podzemných vôd.

- Subject:
- cross-over channel, steam turbine, partial admission, and blade cascade
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- The document deals with the research of flow in the cross-over channel of the high-pressure stage with partial admission of first stage. In the opening part there is a description of the experimental model and the method of measuring flow fields with high velocity gradient using the stereo PIV principle. The second part describes the design of the model inlet part. The third chapter deals with measuring in the cross-over channel outlet slot with no influence of the stator blade cascade of the flollowing stage. The stator blade cascade feedback is described in the fourth part. During all the measurements we observe the influence of the shaft revoluton on the flow field at the cross-over channel outlet. and Obsahuje seznam literatury

- Description:
- Application of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) into cultivation medium of potato and tobacco plantlets caused changes in their growth, morphology and photosynthetic parameters in dependence on the plant species and the concentration ušed. The stimulating effect of BAP added to the cultivation medium was found only at very low BAP concentrations (up to 0.01 g m'^ in tobacco and 0.1 g m'^ in potato plantlets). BAP induced only a very slight tendency to increasing chlorophyll (Chl) a+b content and the ratios Chl alb, ChLcarotenoids and net photosynthetic rate/dark respiration rate {P^íIRd) in both plant species. Also the increase of the photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 as indicated by the ratio of variable to maximal fluorescence (FyT^) and was not statistically significant and was found only in potato plantlets. The stomatal transpiration rate {E^ in tobacco plantlets increased with increasing BAP concentrations up to 0.1 g m'^. However, this was a rather negative effect as it increased a danger of plantlet wilting. In both plant species the BAP concentration of 1.0 g m-^ inhibited growth of plantlet roots; their shoots had altered morphology, their P^, light respiration rate {R\), E^, P^IRy, ratio, Chl contents and parameters of in vivo fluorescence (Fy/Fn,, qp, Rfd) decreased and CO2 compensation concentration increased. This negative effect of BAP was more pronounced in tobacco than in potato plantlets. The above mentioned changes in photosynthetic parameters in plantlets treated with BAP corresponded to the changes in photosynthetic parameters in transgenic plants of the same species with T-DNA carrying gene 4 and resulting from increased level of endogenous cytokinins. However, the application of BAP lead to a decrease in endogenous cytokinins level and thus the effects described are probably due to the action of BAP itself

- Description:
- Academic excellence is allegedly a universal and gender neutral standard of merit. This article examines exactly what is constructed as academic excellence at the micro-level, how evaluators operationalize this construct in the criteria they apply in academic evaluation, and how gender inequalities are imbued in the construction and evaluation of excellence. We challenge the view that the academic world is governed by the normative principle of meritocracy in its allocation of rewards and resources. Based on an empirical study of professorial appointments in the Netherlands, we argue that academic excellence is an evasive social construct that is inherently gendered. We show how gender is practiced in the evaluation of professorial candidates, resulting in disadvantages for women and privileges for men that accumulate to produce substantial inequalities in the construction of excellence., Marieke van den Brink, Yvonne Benschop., and Obsahuje bibliografii

9. Lectins in snail-trematode immune interactions: a review

- lectin, agglutinin, carbohydrate, trematode, schistosome, snail, immunity, and haemocyte
- Language:
- English
- Description:
- Lectins as carbohydrate recognition proteins other than enzymes or immunoglobulins play important roles in living systems, e.g., in celi celi recognition. They are considered to be involved in snail-trematode immune interactions, i.e., in a system where antibodies are lacking and lectins might at least partially substitute immunoglobulin functions. From the snail side, lectins can be located on haemocyte surfaces as receptors for foreignness and they can be found freely in plasma. The latter can function as agglutinins/opsonins helping in the recognition of parasites by haemocytes. They may also link immune cells and pathogens by recognition of surface carbohydrates on both. Lectins of parasite origin could also be involved in snail-trematode interactions. They might function as trematode surface receptors for snail glycoconjugates in parasite masking strategies. Functions other than the involvement in the snail's immune response or the parasite’s evasion strategies might be fulfilled by lectins as well. Among these may be host-finding, penetration, orientation in the host, nutrition. It cannot be omitted that lectin-saccharide reactions represent only a part of the snail-trematode interactions and thus, results obtained from lectin experiments are a rough simplification of the actual, very complicated situation. An array of immune and other reactions comprised of yet unknown bioactive molecules certainly exists in snails and, on the other hand, trematode mechanisms to escape or otherwise interact with these, might be involved at the same time. But we can certainly conclude that a more complete view of the complex snail-trematode interactions also necessitates a more profound knowledge of the identity and functioning of lectins and their ligands, in host and parasite.

10. Modelling of ground water flow in nonhomogeneous media using an integral equation method

- model:article and TEXT
- Subject:
- ground water flow, numerical model, integral equations, proudění podzemní vody, numerický model, and integrální rovnice
- Language:
- Slovak
- Description:
- The paper presents the basic assumptions and relations for underlying the solution of ground water flow using an integral equations method. The basic laws of physics used for this solution are briefly introduced. The mathematical model describes the flow in a saturated domain both for the spatial and the plane problems. The principal parts of the numeric solution of the problem are treated in more detail. To provide an example of an application, a simple model of a dike is presented. For a homogeneous, isotropic dike the solution describes the development of the flow with time and the corresponding changes to the free surface of ground water. The resulting steady-state flow through the dike is compared with the published results (Polubarina-Kočina, 1952). Another example describes the flow through an nonhomogeneous, isotropic dike if a variable hydraulic conductivity depends on the geometric height. Singularities distributed within the domain are used for an iterative solution of the nonlinear partial differential equation describing the ground water flow. and Příspěvek uvádí základní předpoklady a vztahy pro řešení proudění podzemní vody metodou integrálních rovnic.
