a1_The aim of this work was to study the acclimation of photosynthesis in a boreal grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) grown in controlled environment chambers under elevated temperature (ambient + 3.5°C) and CO2 (700 μmol mol-1) with varying soil water regimes. (Psat), maximum rate of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activity (Vcmax) and potential rate of electron transport (Jmax) acclimatized to the changed environment. During the early growing period, we found a greater temperature-induced enhancement of Psat at higher measurement temperatures, which disappeared during the late stage. Under elevated growth temperature, Vcmax and Jmax at lower measurement temperatures (5-15°C) were lower than those under ambient growth temperature during the early period. When the measurements were done at 20-30°C, the situation was the opposite. During the late growing period, Vcmax and Jmax under elevated growth temperature were consistently lower across measurement temperatures. CO2 enrichment significantly increased Psat with higher intercellular CO2 compared to ambient CO2 treatment, however, elevated CO2 slightly decreased Vcmax and Jmax across measurement temperatures, probably due to down-regulation acclimation. For two growing periods, soil water availability affected the variation in photosynthesis and biochemical parameters much more than climatic treatment did. Over two growing periods, Vcmax and Jmax were on average 36.4 and 30.6%, respectively, lower with low water availability compared to high water availability across measurement temperatures. During the late growing period, elevated growth temperature further reduced the photosynthesis under low water availability., a2_Vcmax and Jmax declined along with the decrease in nitrogen content of leaves as growing period progressed, regardless of climatic treatment and water regime. Extremely low-frequency magnetic field (ELF-MF) has been suggested to influence the cognitive capability but this should be dynamically evaluated in a longitudinal study. Previous training can affect performance, but the influence under magnetic field is unclear. This study aims to evaluate the effects of previous training and ELF-MF exposure on learning and memory using the Morris water maze (MWM). Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to MWM training, ELF-MF exposure (50 Hz, 100 μT), or ELF-MF exposure combined with MWM training for 90 days. Normal rats were used as controls. The MWM was used to test. The data show that the rats exposed to training and ELF-MF with training performed better on spatial acquisition when re-tested. However, during the probe trial the rats showed no change between the training phase and the test phase. Compared with the control group, the ELF-MF group showed no significant differences. These results confirm that previous training can improve the learning and memory capabilities regarding spatial acquisition in the MWM and this effect can last for at least 90 days. However, this improvement in learning and memory capabilities was not observed during the probe trial. The invasion of Spartina alterniflora along the coasts of China has allowed this C4 grass to outcompete often much of the native, salt marsh vegetation, such as Phragmites australis (C3 grass), in the Yangtze Estuary. In this study, native grass, P. australis, and
non-native grass, S. alterniflora, were grown in fresh and saline water (moderate salinity of 15‰ and high salinity of 30‰) to compare the effects of salinity on photosynthetic and biochemical parameters in combination with measurement temperatures. The C4 grass, S. alterniflora, showed a greater CO2 assimilation rate than P. australis, across the tested temperatures. The net photosynthetic rate declined significantly with increasing salinity as a result of inhibited stomatal conductance together with a greater decrease in the maximum rate of electron transport (Jmax). In P. australis, salt treatments shifted the optimum temperatures for the maximum rate of carboxylation by Rubisco (Vcmax) and J max to lower temperatures. S. alterniflora showed a greater salt tolerance to moderate stress than that of the native grass, with lower sensitivity of V cmax, Jmax, and the maximum rate of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylation. Both moderate and high stress decreased significantly stomatal conductance of S. alterniflora; high salinity reduced significantly photosynthetic efficiency and Jmax. Our findings indicated that the combination of stomatal conductance, enzyme activity, and electron transport affected the photosynthetic performance of the plants in response to salt treatments. The success of S. alterniflora could be probably attributed to its C4 photosynthetic pathway and the tolerance to moderate salinity. The formation of economic yield and fruit quality of Roxburgh rose (Rosa roxburghii Tratt.) depends essentially on its source-sink interaction. Thus, a pruning experiment was conducted to assess the effects of source-sink regulation on photosynthetic physiology and fruit yield of Roxburgh rose, which was of great significance to production. Cutting off vegetative branches reduced physiological fruit loss and malformed fruits but increased single fruit quality and yield. Results revealed that the stomatal characteristics, the composition of mesophyll tissue, and photosynthesis of leaves on reproductive branches were significantly affected by the ratio of the vegetative and reproductive shoots. Our data indicated that the source-sink ratio could reflect the balance between vegetative growth and reproductive growth of the tree during the whole fruit period. Fruit tree pruning had guiding significance for improving the fruit yield of Roxburgh rose.
Glutamate is a well-characterized excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS). Recently, glutamate receptors (GluRs) were also found in peripheral tissues, including the heart. However, the function of GluRs in peripheral organs remains poorly understood. In the present study, we found that N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) could increase intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) level in a dose-dependent manner in cultured neonatal rat cardiomyocytes. NMDA at 10-4 M increased the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), cytosolic cytochrome c (cyto c), and 17-kDa caspase-3, but depolarized mitochondrial membrane potential, leading to cardiomyocyte apoptosis. In addition, NMDA treatment induced an increase in ba x mRNA but a decrease in bcl-2 mRNA expression in the cardiomyocytes. The above effects of NMDA were bloc ked by the NMDA receptor antagonist (+)-5-methyl- 10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-5,10-imine hydrogen maleate (MK-801), and by ROS scavengers glutathione (GSH) and N-acetylcystein (NAC). These results suggest that stimulation of NMDA receptor in the cardiomyocyte may lead to apoptosis via a Ca2+, ROS, and caspase-3 mediated pathway. To study the light intensity suitable for Bletilla ochracea Schltr., morphology, photosynthetic parameters, and polysaccharide content of seedlings were evaluated under different light intensities. All shade treatments promoted plant growth and net photosynthetic rate while having no significant effect on transpiration rate. The maximum photochemical efficiency and potential photochemical efficiency reached the lowest values under full sunlight. The electron transport rate and photochemical quenching under shade were significantly higher than those under full light, while nonphotochemical quenching was the highest under full light. This indicated that the shade alleviated photoinhibition in summer and improved the utilization of light. B. ochracea could adapt to different light intensities, enhancing photosynthetic efficiency under low light by improving the electron transport and the degree of opened PSⅡ reaction centers, and adapting to high light by increasing heat dissipation. Plant growth, photosynthesis, and polysaccharide accumulation of B. ochracea greatly increased under 76.4% shade.
Gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of PSII were analyzed in the bracts and leaves of cotton plants after anthesis. Photosynthetic activity and photorespiration were measured in the leaves and bracts of cotton grown under either normal or reduced water-saving drip irrigation. The photosynthetic performance, amount of chlorophyll and Rubisco, and net photosynthesis were greater in the bracts than that in the leaves under water stress. The actual photochemical efficiency of PSII decreased in both the bracts and leaves after anthesis under reduced irrigation. However, the decrease was smaller in the bracts than in the leaves, indicating that the bracts experienced less severe photoinhibition compared to the leaves. The greater drought tolerance of bracts could be related to differences in relative water content, instantaneous water-use efficiency, and photorespiration rate. The ratio of photorespiration to net photosynthesis was much higher in the bracts than in leaves. Furthermore, water deficiency (due to the water-saving drip irrigation) had no significant effect on that ratio in the bracts.
