We have investigated amino acid concentrations and protein metabolism in musculus extensor digitorum longus (EDL, fasttwitch,
white muscle) and musculus soleus (SOL, slow-twitch, red muscle) of rats sacrificed in the fed state or after one day of starvation. Fractional protein synthesis rates (FRPS) were measured using the flooding dose method (L-[3,4,5-3H]phenylalanine). Activities of two major proteolytic systems in muscle (the ubiquitin-proteasome and lysosomal) were examined by measurement of chymotrypsin like activity of proteasome (CTLA), expression of ubiquitin ligases atrogin-1 and muscle-ring-finger-1 (MuRF-1), and cathepsin B and L activities. Intramuscular concentrations of the most of non-essential amino acids, FRPS, CTLA and cathepsin B and L activities were in
postprandial state higher in SOL when compared with EDL. The differences in atrogin-1 and MuRF-1 expression were insignificant. Starvation decreased concentrations of a number of amino acids and increased concentrations of valine, leucine, and isoleucine in blood plasma. Starvation also decreased intramuscular concentrations of a number of amino acids differently in EDL and SOL, decreased protein synthesis (by 31 % in SOL and 47 % in EDL), and increased expression of atrogin-1 and MuRF-1 in EDL. The effect of starvation on CTLA and cathepsin B and L activities was insignificant. It is concluded that slow-twitch (red) muscles have higher rates of protein turnover and may adapt better to brief starvation when compared to
fast-twitch (white) muscles. This phenomenon may play a role in more pronounced atrophy of white muscles in aging and muscle
wasting disorders.
Vimba, Vimba vimba (L.) juveniles (initial weight 0.323 g) were fed continuously two contrasting diets, or starved for 7 days, then re-fed. No mortality was observed throughout the experiment. Starved fish lost body weight. During the re-alimentation period compensatory growth occurred on both diets. Full compensation of body wet weight was exhibited only with fish fed natural food. Initial increase of the variability of wet weight was arrested during starvation on both diets. Variability of weight in fish on natural food continued to increase during re-feeding, while on the dry diet the variability stabilised. This can be explained by differences in food particle size distribution between the diets. The observed high value of the condition coefficient is indicative of a combination of high lipids and low mineral content in the body. The fish fed contrasting diets used different strategies in resource allocation during the compensatory phase. Vimba vimba fed natural food promoted growth in length, allocating consumed food to structural tissues and increasing water intake. Fish receiving formulated diet first restored energy reserves, then continued to create new structural mass.

Paper summarizes main aspects of starvation and deals with differences in area of experimental investigation of starved lubrication phenomena in comparison with fully flooded regime. The effects of serosally added 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT, 100 μM) on the short circuit-current (Isc) across jejunum and ileum taken from fed, starved and undernourished (Gerbillus cheesmani) were investigated. The effects of the neurotoxin, tetrodotoxin (TTX, 10 μM) on the basal Isc as well as on the maximum increase in Isc induced by 5-HT were also studied. There were regional variations in the basal Isc as well as in the way by which the small intestine responds to 5-HT. The basal Isc was greater in jejunum than in ileum and such differences were TTX-sensitive. The maximum increase in Isc, which results from addition of 5-HT, was higher in jejunum than in ileum under all three feeding conditions. TTX reduced the maximum increase in Isc induced by 5-HT across stripped and intact intestine of the two regions in the three nutritional states. The 5-HT-induced Isc in the jejunum of both starved and undernourished gerbils and in the ileum of starved animals was the function of both submucosal and myenteric plexus. In jejunum and ileum taken from starved and undernourished gerbils the 5-HT-induced Isc was both chloride- and bicarbonate-dependent. Thus the results indicated that both starvation and undernourishment increase that response and such increases were TTX-sensitive and both chloride- and bicarbonate-dependent., F. Y. Flea beetles are characterized by their tendency to jump. They can also fly. First, the effects of starvation on flight activity in the flea beetle, Phyllotreta nemorum L. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) were determined. After starving P. nemorum for five days a greater number of individuals of both sexes flew than when fed continuously for the same period. In addition, the effect of the mating status of females of P. nemorum on their movement was determined. Mated females were more active than virgin females. It is concluded that starvation stimulates the flight activity of both sexes and mating activates the movement of females of P. nemorum.
Lipid and glycogen reserves were found to decrease when the adult Trichuris globulosa was to starve by incubation in vitro. Changes in acylglycerols (AG), non-csterified fatty acids (ΝΕΡΆ), cholesterol (Choi), phospholipids (PL) and glycogen were observed. Λ marginal depletion in phospholipids was observed while NEFA, AG, Choi and glycogen were rapidly depleted. Neutral glycolipids (cerebrosidcs) showed no significant change. The adult Trichuris globulosa was able to oxidize absorbed U- C-glucose, (Na)-l-t4C-acetate and (Na)-l-l4C-palmitate to CO2.
Parameters of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA; leucine, isoleucine and valine) and protein metabolism were evaluated using L-[1-14C]leucine and a-keto[1-14C]isocaproate (KIC) in the whole body and in isolated perfused liver (IPL) of rats fed ad libitum or starved for 3 days. Starvation caused a significant increase in plasma BCAA levels and a decrease in leucine appearance from proteolysis, leucine incorporation into body proteins, leucine oxidation, leucine-oxidized fraction, and leucine clearance. Protein synthesis decreased significantly in skeletal muscle and the liver. There were no significant differences in leucine and KIC oxidation by IPL. In starved animals, a significant increase in net release of BCAA and tyrosine by IPL was observed, while the effect on other amino acids was non-significant. We conclude that the protein-sparing phase of uncomplicated starvation is associated with decreased whole-body proteolysis, protein synthesis, branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) oxidation, and BCAA clearance. The increase in plasma BCAA levels in starved animals results in part from decreased BCAA catabolism, particularly in heart and skeletal muscles, and from a net release of BCAA by the hepatic tissue., M. We studied the development of the indirect flight muscles and reproductive organs in long-winged (macropterous) adults of the flightless bug Pyrrhocoris apterus (L.) and the factors involved in flight muscles histolysis by means of total protein analysis. Both the extirpation of the corpus allatum, an endocrine gland that is the sole source of juvenile hormone, and sham operation accelerated histolysis and decreased the level of the total protein content of the flight muscles to the same extent. Degeneration of flight muscles was not a result of allatectomy but rather a consequence of injury, followed by resumption of enhanced food intake, because it was stimulated also by the removal of wings. Transfer of penultimate instar larvae to a diapause-inducing short-day photoperiod did not prevent imaginal growth and histolysis of flight muscles, but inhibited growth of ovaries in females and maturation of accessory glands in adult males. Thus inactivation of the corpus allatum in diapausing macropters does not prevent imaginal growth of their flight muscles. Application of a high dose of methoprene to the surface of intact long-day macropterous adults induced precocious histolysis of flight muscles and growth of ovaries in females and accessory glands in males. Prolonged starvation of macropterous adults had only a small effect on the histolysis of their flight muscles. The results indicate that imaginal growth and histolysis of indirect flight muscles in macropterous individuals of P. apterus are largely juvenile hormone-independent processes that are programmed to occur spontaneously, but can be affected by various internal and external factors.
The physiological parameters mortality, mass, oxygen consumption and amylase activity, and microanatomical features of the digestive tract, mesenchym and reproductive organs were used to characterise starvation in Galumna elimata. The mites were reared in sterilised plastic vials containing moistened zeolite at 25°C and a 12:12 photoperiod. The control group was kept under the same conditions, but pieces of bark covered with the green bark alga, Desmococcus vulgaris (syn. Protococcus viridis), were added as food for the mites. The physiological parameters were recorded after 21 days, and the microanatomical after 21 and 42 days. The guts of the starved mites were empty or filled with mucoid substances, while the guts of control mites contained food boli formed from algal cells. The mortality was significantly higher in starved animals. The mortality after 42 days of starvation was higher in males than females. The fresh mass of starved individuals significantly decreased while the water proportion content of their body tissues increased. Oxygen consumption of the starved mites was lower. Starvation did not influence the activity of amylase. Glycogeneous granulae were characteristically absent, and mucoid substances present in the guts of mites starved for 21 days. The activity of mesenteral and caecal cells, proventricular glands and cells of salivary glands was reduced after 42 days of starvation. The cells of the seminal vesicles were reduced and contained no spermatic cells in males starved for 42 days. Starved females probably resorbed immature oocytes, but had eggs in their oviducts. Starvation induces ovovivipary or larvipary in Galumna elimata.
