The calculated maximum net photosynthetic rate (PN) at saturation irradiance (I m) of 1 314.13 µmol m-2 s-1 was 25.49 µmol(CO2) m-2 s-1, and intrinsic quantum yield at zero irradiance was 0.103. The results fitted by nonrectangular hyperbolic model, rectangular hyperbolic method, binomial regression method, and the new model were compared. The maximum PN values calculated by nonrectangular hyperbolic model and rectangular hyperbolic model were higher than the measured values, and the I m calculated by nonrectangular hyperbolic model and rectangular hyperbolic model were less than measured values. Results fitted by new model showed that the response curve of PN to I was nonlinear at low I for Oryza sativa, PN increased nonlinearly with I below saturation value. Above this value, PN decreased nonlinearly with I.
Saturation (SI) and compensation (CI) irradiances [µmol(photon) m-2 s-1] were 383.00±18.40 and 12.95±0.42 for wild C. nitidissima (in mid-July) and 691.00±47.39 and 21.91±1.28 for wild C. sinensis, respectively. C. nitidissima is a shade tolerant species, whereas C. sinensis has a wide ecological range of adaptability to irradiance. Both wild and cultivated C. nitidissima demonstrated low maximum net photosynthetic rate, maximum carboxylation rate, maximum electron transfer rate, and SI, which indicated low photosynthesis ability of leaves that were unable to adapt to strong irradiance environment. Both C. nitidissima and C. sinensis demonstrated strong photosynthetic adaptabilty in new environments. Hence proper shading may raise photosynthetic efficiency of cultivated C. nitidissima and promote its growth. and X. Wei ... [et al.].
Two cultivars (Katy and Erhuacao) of apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) were evaluated under open-field and solar-heated greenhouse conditions in northwest China, to determine the effect of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), leaf temperature, and CO2 concentration on the net photosynthetic rate (PN). In greenhouse, Katy registered 28.3 µmol m-2 s-1 for compensation irradiance and 823 µmol m-2 s-1 for saturation irradiance, which were 73 and 117 % of those required by Erhuacao, respectively. The optimum temperatures for cvs. Katy and Erhuacao were 25 and 35 °C in open-field and 22 and 30 °C in greenhouse, respectively. At optimal temperatures, PN of the field-grown Katy was 16.5 µmol m-2 s-1, 21 % less than for a greenhouse-grown apricot. Both cultivars responded positively to CO2 concentrations below the CO2 saturation concentration, whereas Katy exhibited greater PN (18 %) and higher carboxylation efficiency (91 %) than Erhuacao at optimal CO2 concentration. Both cultivars exhibited greater photosynthesis in solar-heated greenhouses than in open-field, but Katy performed better than Erhuacao under greenhouse conditions. and F. L. Wang, H. Wang, G. Wang.
Photosynthetic water use efficiency (PWUE), stomatal conductance (gs), and water potential were measured at two different positions in the tree crown of two emergent tropical tree species (Shorea beccariana Burck, Dryobalanops aromatica Gaertn. f.). The trees were about 50 m high, in a tropical rain forest in Sarawak, East Malaysia. In both species, gs at the upper crown position at midday was lower than at the lower crown position, even though both positions were exposed to full sunlight; the difference was greater in S. beccariana. Hydraulic limitation occurs in the upper crown position in both species. A midday depression was observed in the photon saturated photosynthetic rate in both species, especially at the upper crown. However, PWUE was markedly higher in the upper crown than the lower crown at midday, even though no morphological adjustment was observed in the leaves; this difference was greater in S. beccariana. and Y.
