Photosynthetic traits of two-year-old Japanese larch seedlings (Larix kaempferi Carr.) grown at elevated CO2 concentrations were studied in relation to structural changes in the needles. Seedlings were grown at two CO2 concentrations, 360 (AC) and 720 (EC) μmol mol-1 at high and low nutrient supply rates, high N (HN) and low N (LN). The photosynthetic capacity fell significantly in EC+LN, but increased significantly in EC+HN. Since the mesophyll surface area exposed to intercellular space per unit leaf area (Ames/A) is correlated with the photosynthetic rate, we measured Ames/A for larch needles growing in EC. Changes of Ames/A in both EC+HN and EC+LN were very similar to the changes in photosynthetic capacity. This suggests that the changes of Ames/A in EC probably caused the changes in the photosynthetic capacity. The changes of Ames/A in EC were attributed to changes in the mesophyll cell size and mesophyll cell number. The photosynthetic capacity in EC can be explained by taking morphological and structural adaptations into account as well as biochemical factors. and N. Eguchi ... [et al.].
The effect of ectomycorrhizal Pisolithus tinctorius (Pt) infection was studied on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of Pinus densiflora seedlings grown at ambient (360 µmol mol-1, AC) and elevated (720 µmol mol-1, EC) CO2 concentrations. After 18 weeks, Pt inoculation had led to significantly increased dry mass and stem diameter of P. densiflora at both CO2 concentrations, relative to non-inoculated seedlings. Moreover, EC significantly increased the ectomycorrhizal development. The phosphate content in needles inoculated with Pt was about three times higher than without inoculation at both CO2 concentrations. The PAR saturated net photosynthetic rates (Psat) of P. densiflora inoculated with Pt were clearly higher than for control seedlings at both CO2 concentrations, and the maximum net photosynthetic rate (PN) at saturated CO2 concentration (Pmax) was higher than in controls. Moreover, the carboxylation efficiency (CE) and RuBP regeneration rate of the PN/Ci curve for P. densiflora inoculated with Pt were significantly higher than for non-inoculated seedlings at both CO2 concentrations, especially at EC. The water use efficiency (WUE) of seedlings inoculated with Pt grown at EC was significantly raised. Allocation of photosynthates to roots was greater in Pt inoculated pine seedlings, because of the enhanced activity of ectomycorrhiza associated with seedlings at EC. Moreover, PN of non-inoculated seedlings grown for 18 weeks at EC tended to be down regulated; in contrast, Pt inoculated seedlings showed no down-regulation at EC. The activity of ectomycorrhiza may therefore be enhanced physiological function related to water and phosphate absorption in P. densiflora seedlings at EC. and D. S. Choi ... [et al.].
The effects of four manganese (Mn) concentrations (1, 10, 50, and 100 g m-3 = Mn1, Mn10, Mn50, Mn100) in solution culture on growth variables were studied for seedlings of five deciduous broad-leaved trees with different successional characteristics and shoot development patterns in northern Japan. The five species were: Betula ermanii, Betula platyphylla var. japonica, and Alnus hirsuta (early-successional species with continuous leaf development), Ulmus davidiana var. japonica (mid-successional species with flush and continuous leaf development), and Acer mono (late-successional species with a flush type leaf development). In plants grown in the Mn environment for about 45 d, relative growth rate (RGR) decreased with increasing Mn supply. Between the 1 and 100 g(Mn) m-3, RGR decreased by 20 % for B. ermanii and B. platyphylla, by 40 % for A. hirsuta and A. mono, and by 80 % for U. davidiana. Specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf mass ratio (LMR) of all species were little affected by high Mn supply. In U. davidiana, however, there was a 67 % decrease in LMR in Mn100 plants. Leaf area ratio (LAR) was higher in early-successional species than in mid- and late-successional ones but differed little among Mn treatments within species, except for U. davidiana where LAR declined substantially with increased Mn supply. While LAR, which represents the relative size of assimilatory apparatus, was little affected, net photosynthetic rate (PN) saturated with radiant energy decreased with increasing Mn supply in all species. Thus PN was adversely affected by high accumulation of Mn in leaves, which resulted in an overall reduction in biomass production. However, the proportional allocation of photosynthates to the assimilatory apparatus was not affected by different Mn toxicity in hardwood tree seedlings. and M. Kitao, T. T. Lei, T. Koike.
We investigated the responses of photon-saturated photosynthesis rate (Psat) and its simultaneous acclimation of anatomy and nitrogen use patterns of current needles of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) seedlings grown under factorial combinations of two nitrogen levels and irradiances. Although N supply resulted in a significant increase of N content in needles under both irradiances, the increase of P sat tended to be suppressed only in shade (S). The significant increase of P sat in full sunlight (O) was associated with the increase of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) and chlorophyll (Chl) contents. In contrast, small increase of Chl content and no increase of RuBPCO content were found in S (90 % cut of full irradiance), which would result in a small increase of Psat. This result suggests that extra N is stocked in needles under shade for the growth in next season. With N supply, a significant decrease of specific leaf area (SLA) was detected only in O. This decrease of SLA was due to the increase of density of needle. Furthermore, the increase of needle density was not due to the increased number and size of mesophyll cells, but the increased density of each mesophyll cell. Therefore, although SLA changed in O, the change did not involve anatomical adaptation to use increased N effectively, at least observable by light microscopy. Hence, even though the SLA would change, N deposition will improve the photosynthetic capacity of Korean pine seedlings, not through the development of needle anatomy but through improvement of the allocation of N in both irradiances. and K. In this study, we questioned whether ground-level ozone (O3) induces hormesis in Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) and its hybrid F1 (L. gmelinii var. japonica × L. kaempferi). In order to answer the question, we exposed seedlings of both taxa to four O3 treatments [ranging from ≈10 to 60 nmol(O3) mol-1] in open-top chambers for two consecutive growing seasons. We found a hormetic response in maximum photosynthetic rate (PNmax) at 1700 μmol(CO2) mol-1 and maximum rates of carboxylation (Vcmax) and electron transport (Jmax) in both larches. Stimulation of PNmax, Vcmax, and Jmax did not lead to suppressed plant productivity in Japanese larch, which followed a stress-tolerant strategy, but it did lead to suppressed plant productivity in hybrid larch which followed a competitive strategy. These findings are the first to suggest that stimulation of physiological functions by low O3 exposures may have negative consequences for larch reproduction., T. Sugai, D.-G. Kam, E. A stem-girdling experiment was carried out on an evergreen conifer, the Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc.), in mid summer in Northeast China. A 50 % higher respiration rate at the upper part of the stem was observed 3 d after stem girdling, and a stable higher rate (1.2-2.8 times) one week later. However, no higher soluble sugar or starch contents were found in the upper bark of the girdled stems in measurements over three weeks. These findings indicate that most of the newly-formed photosynthates were consumed by the high respiratory activity; this is also implied by the strong correlation between the photosynthetic photon flux over the canopy (PPF) and respiration at the upper parts of girdled stems. Moreover, the maximum PPF and cumulative PPF one day before measurement (PPFmax-Y and CPPF-Y, respectively) were closely correlated with the respiratory difference between the upper and the lower parts, but no such correlation was found with the instantaneous PPF (PPF-I) and cumulative PPF on the current day from sunrise to measured time point (CPPF-C). This shows that photosynthates newly formed by canopy needles need at least one day for transportation in order to increase the stem respiration at tree breast height. and W. J. Wang ... [et al.]
We studied the effects of applying 50 kg(N) ha-1 year-1 of nitrogen (N) on needle photosynthesis, N allocation and nutrient content in the sun- and shade crowns of the hybrid larch F1 (Larix gmelinii var. japonica × L. kaempferi). The light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (PNmax) was not significantly affected by N application or crown position, although the contents of N, P, K, and chlorophyll (Chl), and the maximum rates of carboxylation and electron transport were lower in needles of the shade crown than of the sun crown. This difference was mainly due to an increase in the intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) in the needles of the shade crown. Analysis of N allocation in photosynthetic systems revealed that more N was allocated to functions related to electron transport and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) regeneration in needles of the shade crown. N allocation in needles of the hybrid larch F1 was regulated mainly by the light conditions, rather than by N application., Q. Z. Mao ... [et al.]., and Obsahuje bibliografii
The photosynthetic rate of seed wings developed from sepals was compared with the leaf photosynthetic rate in nine dipterocarp tree species (Dipterocarpus pachyphyllus, Dryobalanops aromatica, Dryobalanops lanceolata, Shorea beccariana, Shorea ferruginea, Shorea macroptera ssp. bailonii, Shorea macroptera ssp. macropterifolia, Shorea pilosa, and Vatica spp.). The wings showed positive photosynthetic activity, but at much lower rates than in the leaves. The daily CO2 uptake of wings showed slightly negative values in diurnal gas exchange measurements, even in D. aromatica that showed the highest photosynthetic capacity of all nine species. This low photosynthetic rate in the wings may be the result of low nitrogen and chlorophyll contents in the wing compared with leaves. However, the wings had a higher C/N ratio than leaves, and were thicker. Hence, dipterocarp wings have physical strength and defence against herbivores as higher priorities than photosynthetic activity. and T. Kenzo ... [et al.].
The ecophysiological traits of acacia and eucalypt are important in assessing their suitability for afforestation. We measured the
gas-exchange rate, the leaf dry mass per area (LMA) and the leaf nitrogen content of two acacia and four eucalypt species. Relative to the eucalypts, the acacias had lower leaf net photosynthetic rate
(PN), lower photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency (PNUE), higher water-use efficiency (WUE), higher LMA and higher leaf nitrogen per unit area (N area). No clear differences were observed within or between genera in the maximum rate of carboxylation (Vcmax) or the maximum rate of electron transport (Jmax), although these parameters tended to be higher in eucalypts. PNUE and LMA were negatively correlated. We conclude that acacias with higher LMA do not allocate nitrogen efficiently to photosynthetic system, explaining why their PN and PNUE were lower than in eucalypts., E. Novriyanti ... Picea glehnii Masters can grow in strongly acidic volcanic ash soil (pH 3.6) in northern Japan. We compared needle longevity, photosynthetic rate, and concentrations of elements in needles, in mature trees of P. glehnii growing in volcanic ash soil and in brown forest soil (pH 5.4). P. glehnii growing in volcanic ash soil showed suppressed photosynthetic rate and growth by the deficiency in nitrogen compared with its growth in brown forest soil. However, the younger needles of P. glehnii growing in volcanic ash soil maintained a high photosynthetic rate, as a result of large amounts of remobilized nitrogen from senesced needles. Needles of P. glehnii growing in volcanic ash soil did not show deficiencies in Ca, Mg, or K. Moreover, Al was at low levels in the needles, suggesting that P. glehnii was able to avoid Al toxicity by Al exclusion. P. glehnii thus exhibits great ability to adapt to an acidic environment. and M. Kayama, F. Satoh, T. Koike.
