Changes in chlorophyll (Chl) a+b and a/b, senescence patterns during Chl loss and changes in net photosynthetic rate (P^) of four leaf flushes in Quercus acutissima and Q. serrata were studied. Emergent current-year leaves were classified according to the order of shoot growth flushes (first to fourth flush groups). Senescence patterns showed that leaf fall started from the leaf cohorts of the first flush group (the "oldest" leaf cohorts) which cuhninated upwards to the fourth leaf flush group (the "yoímgest" leaf cohorts). Senescence during Chl loss was accompanied by a decline in Pf^. A strong influence by the leaf flushing phenomenon on senescence was found which limited leaf bearing period and duration of Having large total leaf area and moderately long duration, tiie third and second leaf flush groups reflected the highest photosynthetic potential. This may be a positive attribute since the duration by which these plants maximize the use of its assimilatory organs is an important factor for their carbon fixation.
Nondestructive methods to estimate individual leaf area (LA) accurately, by leaf length (L) and/or width (W), is helpful for the in situ and successive LA measurements. However, leaf shape and size may covary with environment and thus alter the coefficients of LA estimation models. To test such hypothesis, we carried out an experiment by measuring Saussurea stoliczkai C. B. Clarke leaves along an altitudinal transect in Damxung county, central Tibet. In July 2011, we selected seven sites at about every 150 m in altitude from 4,350 m to 5,250 m a.s.l. A total of 1,389 leaves (182 to 203 leaves for each site) were measured. For each site, models developed by two leaf dimensions [LA = a (L×W) + b] could estimate LA more accurately than those by single dimension. L, W, LA and leaf shape index (L:W ratio) all decreased with increasing altitude, leading to significant differences in coefficients of two-dimension model between almost every two sites. Accordingly, a common
two-dimension model is unlikely to occur for S. stoliczkai across the whole altitudinal transect, indicating that the varying leaf shape may alter the coefficient of LA estimation models., Z. Wang, L. Zhang., and Obsahuje bibliografii
Heteroblasty of sugar beet cultivar Rizor was studied under field conditions for three growing seasons (2003, 2005, 2006) in a Randomized Complete Block (RCB) design experiment. Eleven leaf samplings, from early June till the end of October, were conducted each year and leaf shape parameters [leaf area (LA), centroid X or Y (CX or CY), length (L), width (W), average radial (AR), elongation (EL), shape factor (SF)] were determined by an image analysis system. During samplings, Leaf Area Index (LAI) was measured non-destructively. Significant year and sampling effects were found for all traits determined. With the progress of the growing season, leaves became smaller (LA, L, W, and AR were decreased) and rounded. The largest leaves were sampled in 2006 when LAI was highest. LA was strongly correlated with L and W with simple functions (y = 0.1933 x2.2238, r 2 = 0.96, p<0.001, and y = 28.693 x - 192.33, r 2 = 0.97, p< 0.001, respectively), which could be used for non-destructive LA determination. Also, LAI was significantly related with LA and leaf dimensions (L, W) suggesting that an easy, non-destructive determination of LAI under field conditions is feasible for sugar beet cv. Rizor. and J. T. Tsialtas, N. Maslaris.
Genotypic variations were observed among 6 variants and an indigenous one as a control. An efficient genotype OCD(L) of Ocimum sanctum had the greatest content of chlorophylls [2.15 g kg-1(FM)], Chl a/b ratio of 1.86, net photosynthetic rate of 0.72 mg(CO2) m-2 s-1, and 1.56 % oil formation. Methyl chavicol formed 50.31 % of total oil in OSP-6 genotype, which had also maximum peroxidase activity [ΔOD 2.4 mg-1(protein)] and maximum production of eugenol (30.44 % of total oil). We found an oxido-reducible reaction of peroxidase and high bands of peroxidase isoenzymes in this OSP-6 genotype for the formation of monoterpene essential oil(s) and possibly the major constituents of eugenol through the high production of photosynthates. and A. Winter wheat plants were grown in open top chambers either at 365 µmol mol-1 (AC) or at 700 µmol mol-1 (EC) air CO2 concentrations. The photosynthetic response of flag leaves at the beginning of flowering and on four vertical leaf levels at the beginning of grain filling were measured. Net photosynthetic rates (PN) were higher at both developmental phases in plants grown at EC coupled with larger leaf area and photosynthetic pigment contents. The widely accepted Farquhar net photosynthesis model was parameterised and tested using several observed data. After parameterisation the test results corresponded satisfactorily with observed values under several environmental conditions. and N. Harnos, Z. Tuba, K. Szente.
In a two-year experiment (2002-2003), five N application rates [0, 60, 120, 180, and 240 kg(N) ha-1, marked N0, N60, N120, N180, and N240, respectively] were applied to sugar beet cv. Rizor arranged in a Randomized Complete Block design with six replications. Leaf shape parameters [leaf area (LA), maximum length (L), maximum width (W), average radial (AR), elongation (EL), and shape factor (SF)] were determined using an image analysis system, and leaf area index (LAI) was non-destructively measured every two weeks, from early August till mid-September (four times). Years, samplings, and their interaction had significant effects on the determined parameters. Fertilization at the highest dose (N240) increased L and sampling×fertilization interaction had significant effects on LA, L, W, and SF. For this interaction, W was the best-correlated parameter with LA and LAI meaning that W is a good predictor of these parameters. Two proposed models for LA estimation were tested. The model based on both leaf dimensions [LA = 0.5083 (L×W) + 31.928] predicted LA better than that using only W (LA = 21.686 W - 112.88). Instrumentally measured LAI was highly correlated with predicted LAI values derived from a quadratic function [LAI = -0.00001 (LA)2 + 0.0327 LA - 2.0413]. Thus, both LA and LAI can be reliably predicted non-destructively by using easily applied functions based on leaf dimensions (L, W) and LA estimations, respectively. and J. T. Tsialtas, N. Maslaris.
Chlorophyll (Chl) content, photochemical activity of chloroplasts as well as photosynthetic and crop productivity were studied in different winter hexaploid Triticale (xTriticosecale Witt.) lines and their F1 hybrids. Heterosis enhanced Chl content, photosynthetic potential, photosynthetic productivity, and grain yield only in several F1 hybrids of Triticale. Indication in some genotypes of close correlations among morphological structure, Chl content, photochemical activity of chloroplasts, photosynthetic potential, and plant productivity may be used in breeding practice of Triticale. and S. Our experiment was conducted in order to find out effects of paclobutrazol (PBZ; 30 μl l-1) on morphology, photosynthetic process, and stress markers under water surplus and deficit conditions in several wheat genotypes. Study revealed that relative water content (RWC), photosynthetic rate, and maximal quantum yield of PSII (FV/FM) was improved after a PBZ application both under irrigation and water deficit across the genotypes, while the stomatal conductance was reduced. Further, the application of PBZ led to reduced leaf area in wheat genotypes. Moreover, a proline content was higher in the wheat genotypes under water stress as compared to the irrigated plants. The application of PBZ led to downregulation of the proline content under water deficit, while there was no significant change in the content and activity under irrigation with or without the PBZ treatment. These findings indicated that due to the application of PBZ the wheat genotypes might sense a lower stress level (indicated by the proline content) and better drought tolerance (according to RWC and photosynthetic characteristics)., S. Net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gS), transpiration rate (E), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), leaf water potential (Ψw), leaf area, chlorophyll (Chl) content, and the activities of photosynthetic carbon reduction cycle (PCR) enzymes in two mulberry (Morus alba L.) cultivars (drought tolerant Anantha and drought sensitive M-5) were studied during water stress and recovery. During water stress, PN, gS, and E declined whereas Ci increased. PN, gS, and E were less affected in Anantha than in M-5, which indicates tolerance nature of Anantha over M-5. Activities of ribulose-5-phosphate kinase, NAD- and NADP-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenases, and 3-phosphoglycerate kinase decreased with increasing stress in both the cultivars. The enzyme activities less affected in tolerant (Anantha) than in sensitive cultivar (M-5) were restored after re-watering to almost initial values in both the cultivars. Re-watering of the plants led to an almost complete recovery of PN, E, and gS, indicating that a short-term stress brings about reversible effect in these two cultivars of mulberry. and S. Thimmanaik ... [et al.].
Three-month-old mulberry (Morus alba L.) cultivars (salt tolerant cv. S1 and salt sensitive cv. ATP) were subjected to different concentrations of NaCl for 12 d. Leaf area, dry mass accumulation, total chlorophyll (Chl) content, net CO2 assimilation rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E) declined, and intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) increased. The changes in these parameters were dependent on stress severity and duration, and differed between the two cultivars. The tolerant cultivar showed a lesser reduction in PN and gs coupled with a better Ci and water use efficiency (WUE) than the sensitive cultivar. and S. Giridara Kumar ... [et al.].
