The development of the nematode Syncuaria squamata (Linstow, 1883), a gizzard parasite of cormorants, was experimentally studied in the ostracod Notodromas monacha. After the eggs of this nematode have been swallowed by the ostracod, the toothed first-stage larvae of the parasite are released and penetrate through the intestinal wall into the haemocoel of the crustacean. Before attaining the infective third stage, the larvae moult twice in the body of the intermediate host (9-11 and 13-15 days after infection at water temperatures of 20-22° C). The fishes Alhumaides hipunctatus, Noemacheilus barbatulus, Oncor-hynchus mykiss and Poecilia reticulata were for the first time recorded as suitable experimental paratenic hosts of S. squamata third-stage larvae in which a slight growth of larvae may occur. The first recorded natural paratenic host of this nematode was tench, Tinca tinea, originating from a South-Bohemian pond where cormorants occur. Paratenic hosts are apparently the main source of S. squamata infection for cormorants.
Olfactory bulbectomy in rodents is considered a putative model of
depression. Depression is often associated with drug addiction. Our previous studies demonstrated that methamphetamine (MA) administration to rat mothers affects both, mothers and their pups. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of bulbectomy, as a model of depression, and MA administration on behavior of rat mothers and postnatal development of their pups. Adult female Wistar rats were randomly divided into two groups: bulbectomized (OBX) and sham-operated (SH). A period of 20 days was allowed for the development of the depressive-like phenotype. Animals were tested in the motor activity test and 2 % sucrose preference for anhedonia and hyperactive locomotor response to a novel environment, respectively. After then females were impregnated. Pregnant females were exposed to daily subcutaneous (s.c.) injection of MA (5 mg/kg) or saline (SA) during the entire gestation period. Postnatally, maternal behavior and pup development was examined. The effect of a challenge dose of MA (1 mg/kg, s.c.) on behavior was further examined in adult male offspring. Our results showed no differences in the maternal behavior as a matter of bulbectomy, only OBX rats slept more than all the SH controls. Pups from OBX mothers were born with lower birthweight and gained less weight during the postnatal development than pups from SH controls. Both, bulbectomy and MA administration, delayed the eyes opening. As a matter of functional development of the pups, maternal OBX procedure impaired the performance in the Bar-holding test, but only in saline group. OBX/SA group was the worst in the Bar-holding test relative to all the other groups. In addition, pups
from OBX mothers dropped more boluses during the Bar-holding test, suggesting that they were more stressed. In adult male offspring, bulbectomy increased immobility only in the SA/SA group. Prenatal MA exposure increased locomotion, while decreasing immobility. In addition, challenge dose of MA in adulthood increased distance traveled, locomotion, rearing, and average and maximal velocity, while decreasing immobility and grooming. In conclusion, our results suggest that depressive-like phenotype of rat mothers induces impairment in somatic and functional development of their male offspring.
Empirical protocols for assessing the suitability of prey for aphidophagous coccinellids are examined and a modified scheme of categorization is presented. It is argued that prey suitability should be assessed independently for larval development and adult reproduction because of potentially divergent nutritional requirements between these life stages. A scheme is proposed for assessing prey suitability for larval development using conspecific eggs as a reference diet against which diets of various prey types can be compared both within and among coccinellid species. Among suitable prey (those that support ca. 100% survival of larvae to the adult stage), those that promote faster development and yield larger adults relative to a conspecific egg diet are considered "optimal" for larvae. Prey that yield viable adults with similar or reduced adult weight after a similar or extended period of development relative to a diet of conspecific eggs are classified as "adequate". Prey are "marginal" if they support the survival of some larvae, but significantly less than 100%. Supplementary water should be provided with any non-aphid diet (e.g. pollen and alternative sources of animal protein) given the potential for food-specific diet-drought stress interactions. For adults, suitable prey are classified as "adequate" if they support the production of viable eggs when fed as a monotypic diet, or "marginal" if they merely prolong adult life relative to a water source. Prey that comprise an optimal or adequate diet for both larval development and adult reproduction are termed "complete" and these can be indexed for relative suitability according to derived estimates of rm. Potential sources of error in diet evaluation studies are identified and discussed.
The developmental stages and life cycle of the nematode Camallanus anabantis Pcarse, 1933 an intestinal parasite of Anabas testudineus (Bloch) arc described. The copepod Mesocyclops leuckarti (Claus) was used as experimental intermediate host. After being ingested by the copepods the nematode first-stage larvae enter its haemocoel, where they moult twice, 4 d.p.i. and 11 d.p.i., at 21-26°C, respectively to become the infective third-stage larvae. The definitive fish hosts become infected when feeding on copcpods harbouring infective larvae. In the fish host’s intestine the larvae undergo two more moults, the third on day 15 p.i. The fourth moult of “male” larvae occurred on day 68 p.i. and that of “female” larvae on day 86 pi. at water temperatures 24-36°C- A female with eggs and few larvae in the uteri was first observed on day 187 p.i.
An ontogenetic study of ecto-ATPase activity and the content of enzyme proteins was assessed in the caudate nucleus and hippocampal synaptic plasma membranes isolated from rats at various ages (15, 30, 90, 180 and 365 days). The ontogenetic profile revealed that the enzyme activities in both brain areas were the highest on day 30 and 365, while the ecto-ATPase protein abundance was the highest on day 15 after birth. Possible explanation for obtained ontogenetic profile and the discrepancy between activity and abundance may reside in the fact that ecto-ATPase during development could exert additional roles other than those related to metabolism of ATP. a1_The modern concept of causality of diseases emphasizes the study of natural defense functions of the organism and possibilities of influencing them, which will lead to effective prevention of these diseases. A great deal of information has been obtained on the system growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I, which is of quite fundamental importance for the integrity of the organism. A dysbalance of the system may be the cause of diseases of the neonatal period, as well as diseases associated with aging. In old age, the synthesis of the crucial peptide system, IGF-I, declines as well as the sensitivity of tissues to this hormone. At the same time the changes in the expression of IGF-binding proteins (IGFBP) occur. Systemic growth factors are present in measurable concentrations in the circulation, they are, however, taken up or synthesized by some tissues, where they act as local cellular regulators. IGF-I is produced by many tissues, including bones under the control of estrogens, growth hormone and the parathyroid hormone. A decline of bone IGF-I in the cortical portion of bones is one of the many mechanisms leading to the development of involutional osteoporosis. Correlation studies, which have provided evidence of a relationship between the IGF system and the building of peak bone mass and its subsequent loss contributed to the understanding of the pathogenesis of this disease. It may be foreseen that the results of intervention studies focused on the effects of the recombinant IGF-I will also influence therapeutic and preventive approaches. Modern antiresorption pharmacotherapy stabilizes or enhances bone density and reduces the risk of fractures. Penyamun is a central figure of rumors of public construction sacriface rumors and head-hunting rumors that have been recorded in Southeastern Asia since beginning of the 20th century. The aim of the present article is to analyze the present-day form of such rumors on the island of Sumba in eastern Indonesia. All rumors discussed herein focus on the figure of penyamun, a foreigner yearning for body parts or blood of the inhabitants of Sumba.
he eight Millennium Development Goals agreed upon at the UN Millennium Summit in 2000 approached their deadline in 2015. They focused on reducing extreme poverty and hunger in the world as well as building foundations for social development by providing primary education, basic health care or employment to the global poor. Although they provided some tools to combat human suffering, the MDGs were also criticized for being disembedded from local activities and lacking strong objectives and analytical power. These shortcomings were to be overcome in the new post-2015 development agenda of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs were adopted in September 2015 at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit. The SDGs are ambitious goals to eliminate extreme poverty and hunger altogether, providing everyone with quality education, health care, clean water, decent work and access to sustainable energy. They also focus on gender equality and reducing global inequalities among countries. Moreover, they also endorse the commitment to sustainable development by changing industry, production and consumption patterns, combating climate change and deterioration of life in oceans, desertification and deforestation, and promoting world peace and global partnership. How these goals will be implemented is another challenge. Despite their ambition, concrete results are to be measured by fragmented and controversial indicators. Another contestation centres on the power of the private sector which was inscribed into the very logic of the SDGs.
In March 2014 we talked with women representatives of women’s and anti-poverty organisations in Lusaka, Zambia, about the contemporary development cooperation framework, the previous era of the MDGs as well as the upcoming challenges. Zambia is a country rich in resources and yet there is a lot of poverty, a country with progressive past and uncertain future in today’s unjust global economic and political arrangement.
We tested the effect of perinatal (one week prenatal and one week postnatal) normobaric hypoxia on the immune response of rats in their 9th week of life. We found that perinatally hypoxic rats produced less serum antibodies after sequential immunization with ovalbumin and sheep red blood cells. Also phagocytosis of HEMA microparticles by neutrophil leukocytes from perinatally hypoxic rats was depressed as well as the oxidative burst of their peritoneal macrophages and neutrophils. These results demonstrate that perinatal hypoxia has an important effect on the immune system of the rat.
The effects of photoperiod on pre-imaginal development and reproductive maturation of adult females of the multicolored Asian lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), were investigated at 20°C and at photoperiods from 10L : 14D to 18L : 6D. Experiments were conducted on a laboratory strain that originated from the Russian Far East. Larvae and adults were fed on the green peach aphid Myzus persicae. Under short day conditions the pre-imaginal development was faster than under long day conditions. The acceleration of pre-imaginal development occurred when day length was shorter than 16 h and the threshold day length was ca 14 h. The rate of reproductive maturation of adult females, in contrast, was twice as high under long day conditions, with the threshold between 14L : 10D and 12L : 12D, although even under short day conditions ca 10% of the females show a tendency to mature more quickly.
