This article analyzes and evaluates the book Language Management in Contact Situations: Perspectives from Three Continents (Nekvapil - Sherman, 2009a). The first section summarizes the basic features of Language Management Theory (LMT) itself. The second section reviews a selection of the individual chapters, devoted to, for example, internet discussions between native English speakers concerning the problems of acquiring and using Czech or meetings between Japanese students and various non-native speakers of Japanese. In the discussion section, the author observes that there are differences between the authors working with LMT, above all regarding whether they define the norms guiding speakers in individual interactions, as well as the degree to which they analyze the (linguistic) behavior of speakers as bound to specific interactions. The book is evaluated as thought-provoking given its emphasis of on the inseparability of linguistic behavior and behavior-toward-language and on the processual character of language management, and can thus serve as inspiration for research on the Czech language situation as a multilingual one., Jiří Homoláč., and Obsahuje seznam literatury
The treatise deals with the language of the earliest redaction of the Old Bohemian Annals written in Czech, which were issued i.a. through the merit of the author of this article. The focus of attention are six texts from the middle of the fifteenth century; the objective of the treatise is to verify from the position of a linguist the validity of the conclusions on the filial relations between the individual annals, which were formulated by the historian P. Čornej, to date the texts more precisely and formulate the specific language features of the individual annals. The article discusses the linguistic phenomena typical, or on the other hand exceptional, for the annals and the period of their origin, namely from all of the linguistic levels (ortography and phonetics, morphology, syntax, stylistics, lexis). Through the analysis, it was proved that the annals capture many times a distinctly archaic form of the Czech language, predominantly on the lower levels. On the other hand, progress is recorded in the lexis, which reacts to the social development most flexibly. The opinion of filial relations between the manuscripts is in agreement with the opinion of the historian. and Alena M. Černá.
The paper aims to integrate the results of several studies on the representation of masculine generics in German into a theoretical framework. Although the results are consistent in showing the male bias of masculine generics, they are based on different experimental procedures and stimulus variations, and that makes the cognitive processes involved hard to compare. Assuming that reading results in the construction of situation models and that gender ‑related memory content is activated through a fast, undirected resonance process it is possible to determine a common cognitive basis. Possible causes of gender ‑related resonance are identified and their influence on situation models is discussed. The theoretical base allows the formulation of general statements on how gender ‑related information influences language processing. Furthermore, it has practical implications for how to implement a gender ‑fair language., Lisa Irmen, Ute Linner ; přeložila Barbora Schnelle., Přeloženo z němčiny, Obsahuje bibliografii, and Anglické resumé
