2. An attempt to identify places associated with trade and exchange in early medieval strongholds in the example of Ostrów Tumski in Wrocław

On the example of Ostrów Tumski in Wrocław (Silesia, Polish lands) an attempt of identification of places associated with trade and exchange in early medieval strongholds was made. The alleged marketplace existed in the stronghold from the end of the 11th century to the end of the 12th century. Its existence would be confirmed by the empty square between buildings, the accumulation of finds related to trade and exchange as well as spending free time. The connection of some buildings form Ostrów Tumski with commercial activities is also not excluded. On the basis of analogies from the main centers of the Piast state and selected sites from the Bohemian and Moravian territories, the potential location of the marketplaces was analyzed. Attention was drawn to the relationship between finds related to trade and exchange with other manifestations of economic activity (e.g. non-ferrous metallurgy). An attempt was also made to answer the question when and in what political and economic conditions such places could be created.

3. Ard marks and changes in land use at the beginning of the Early Middle Ages: A case study from the site of Miłosławice, north Silesia

In a forest near the present village of Miłosławice in Silesia, 34 mounds of various sizes were found that are the results of human activity. Research including excavations of two of them has not proved the original intention of the mound builders, and only one burnt human bone makes it impossible to interpret the whole area as barrow cemetery, but the plough marks found under a large mound are interesting. Both the stratigraphy and pollen data enable us to prove a change in land use, which took place between 6 and 8th centuries AD as 14C dating from the mounds revealed. The paper aims to present and discuss the ard furrows discovered recently under a large round mound at Miłosławice. The study is focused on the remains of the furrows and their stratigraphical relationship with the mounds. and V lese nedaleko dnešní vsi Miłosławice ve Slezsku bylo objeveno 34 mohyl různé velikosti, které jsou pozůstatkem lidské aktivity. Výzkum zahrnující odkryv dvou z nich neprokázal původní záměr stavitelů mohyl; jediná přepálená lidská kost neumožňuje interpretovat celou lokalitu jako mohylové pohřebiště, pozoruhodné jsou však stopy orby zjištěné pod jednou z velkých mohyl. Jak stratigrafická, tak palynologická data nám dovolují prokázat změnu využití půdy, která se odehrála mezi 6. a 8. stol. n. l., jak dokládá 14C datování vzorků z mohyl. Cílem článku je prezentovat a diskutovat orební brázdy nedávno objevené pod velkou okrouhlou mohylou. Studie se zaměřuje na stopy brázd a jejich stratigrafický vztah s mohylami.

The large compendium titled Die österreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild contains two volumes devoted to Bohemia (1894 and 1896) and one volume devoted to Moravia and Silesia (1897). Chapters on folk culture are accompanied by a plethora of pictures, a significant number of which depict rural residents wearing traditional dress. However, the informative value of illustrations depicting folk costumes from Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia as a source for ethnological research is limited. The unbalanced selection of examples from individual regions is problematic. Understandably, a great emphasis was placed on the German ethnic group, but even ethnographic regions inhabited by Czech population are not represented proportionally to the preservation of traditional culture, so the resulting visual perception does not even correspond to the reality in the late nineteenth century. Czech painters were addressed to illustrate two volumes about Bohemia, but the Moravia and Silesia volume was illustrated almost exclusively by artists with ties to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where they studied or taught, and to the imperial court. However, not only Viennese, but even all Czech painters had no direct experience with the folk culture in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. They worked according to supplied photographs, the availability of which eventually influenced the choice of illustrations. The successful level of both the drawing and painting templates and their xylographic treatments posed a positive aspect. And what is essential - the comparison with the traced model photographs confirms their basically faithful interpretation. Even so, the ethnologist cannot underestimate the critical insight into the documentary value of the illustrations accompanying the admirably monumental work Die österreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild, named Kronprinzenwerk after its initiator and partly co-author, Crown Prince Rudolf.

7. Early medieval glazed objects from the Wrocław and Opole strongholds: function, origin and social significance

This study concerns glazed objects from two major centres in Silesia: Wrocław and Opole. All the glazed items from layers dated from the late 10th to the first half of the 13th century are appraised, i.e. ceramic and stone Easter eggs, knobbed rattles, ‘stars’ and pottery. Each category of artefacts is appraised separately as they differ from each other in terms of the production technique and presumably their provenance. Therefore, the locations of the workshops that produced these items is considered. Based on the collections from Wrocław and Opole, a different frequency of individual glazed items is observed, which is related to their specific distribution and most likely the different role of both centres. A separate issue is determining the value and social function of the glazed vessels, Easter eggs and rattles. In contrast, less emphasis is placed on their symbolic function, as this issue has been widely discussed by other researchers.

a1_A la base des explorations de terrain et du vaste matériel de chanson des environ de Těšín (dans la partie sud-est de la Silésia tchèque), les auteurs destinent des facteurs principaux, qui dominent une action de variation dans la chanson populaire et déterminent façons, mesure et types de changements, par lesquels la chanson populaire dans la présentation orale passe. On classe ces facteurs en trois cycles fondamentals. Il s'agit avant tout des facteurs de déclamation, d'interprétation, donné par les qualités et les aptitudes du chanteur et après par des situations de chant dans lesquelles la chanson est présentée. Une des grandes importances a la personne qui chante, sa mémoire, son goût, le talent verbal et musical et ses aptidudes créatrices. Des chanteurs excellents exercent comme facteur conservant la tradition populaire; il retient dans la mémoire l'expression des chansons la plus achevée, ils connaissent des chansons particulières et unitaires et ils savent les présenter dans le vestige du style authentique régional ou local. Mais simultanément ces chanteurs excellents mettent dans la tradition des chansons des impulsions nouvelles et font revivre le mouvement du développement. Ils s'avent avec prémeditation et par création modifier des chansons populaires et quelques uns d'eux forment aussi des propres chansons. Une analyse en détail de ces propres chansons montre, qu'elles s'appuient sur des modèles achevés de vers ou d'exemples musicaux traditionels, qu'elles continuent de se développer, ou bien qu'il s'agit de composition complètement indépendantes d'après des principes de la chanson populaire traditionnelle. A part le chanteur c'étaient encore certaines situations, pendant lesquelles on a réciter des chansons, qui ont influencé le processus de variation. Ainsi par exemple le chant collectif et commune de la chanson a limité des possibilités de variation et a éliminé en grande mesure des changements individuels, car les chanteurs étaient obligés de tenir relativement le son unitaire des mots et de la mélodie. Par contre pendant la récitation soliste s'ouvrent des possibilités de changements de variation les plus différents, à partir des petites modifications verbales, des contamination des strophes, jusqu'à des improvisations indépendantes (par exemple à des mélodies de bergerie ou à des chansons lyriques d'amour, que des chanteuses chantaient pour la plupart intimement "pour elles")., a2_Comme second cycle des facteurs de variation des auteurs analysent des facteurs "intérieurs", qui consistent dans la seule base de chanson, dans sa composition et dans ses qualités. Le contenu de toute la base locale de chanson a joué ici un grand rôle. Chaque chanson vit dans la mémoire du chanteur communément avec des autres chansons et cela donne des suppositions pou leurs actions et le croisement mutuel. D'autant plus riche est la base du chant d'un certain chanteur et d'une certain région, d'autant plus sont données des possibilités pour une influence mutuelle et pour la variation. Il dépend du caractère du genres singulièrs de chanson, quelques genres de chansons (par exemples des chansons épiques ou cérémonielles) succombent moins à une variation et retiennent relativement et stabilement leur caractère, des autre groupe de chanson (par exemple des chansons d'amour ou des mélodies de bergerie) se changent expressivement sans cesse dans la tradition, ses strophes particulières s'alient en nouvelles et nouvelles mosaiques, qui se disloquent bientot et dont se forme en des nouvelles libres chaines de strophes. Après il consiste la structure de chaque chanson particulière; par exp. aussi parmi des chansons d'amour, dans lesquelles domine une forte dynamique de variation se trouvent quelques chansons qui ne se changent qu'un peu et retiennent dans la tradition relativement un caractère stabile; ce sont par exemple des chansons, dont les strophes s'attachent continument et chaque omission de la strophe ou de la contamination corromperait tout la structure de la chanson. Comme troisième cycle des facteurs les auteurs sont fixé des facteurs écologiques, c'est a dire des facteurs géographiques et historiques de sociétés. Des variantes de chansons des villages voicinnants se distinguent entre eux moins que des variantes des villages éloignés, parceque la chanson pendant son pélerinage de place en place succomb toujours aux facteurs nouveaux et aux changements pénétrants. Quelque fois le facteur géographique devient le porteur de la specification différente régionale, eventuellement aussi le porteur des différentes influences ethniques. Cela se manifeste expressivement avant tout à cette époque la, s'il s'agit de territoire contacte ou transitoire, ou se touchent et se percent différents traits régionaux ou ethniques. Ceux-ci enrichissent la tradition populaire par des impulsions nouvelles et donnent une base plus riche pour la variation des chansons - pour des contaminations, des adaptations, des changements de style etc., a3_De même des successives métamorphoses économiques, sociales et culturelles influencent de développement de chant populaire et forment une nouvelle situation pour la variation des chansons. Par exemple: à partir du revierement du 19ième jusqu'au 20ième siècle pénétraient dans le chant de la région de Těšín des chansons et des coupletes mercantiles, demi-populaires, sentimentales, des chansons des livres des chansons et des chansons scolaires et elles changeaient successivement le goût populaire et ses influences et ses éléments percaient aussi dans des chansons traditionnelles, avant tout en un facteur de melodie. Ces trois cycles des éléments (d'interprétation, "intérieurs" et écologiues) se rattachent non seulement réciproquement, mais aussi ils s'influencent; par exemple des conditions géographiges et le developpement de bergeries dans la région de Těšín (sembable comme partout dans les Carpates) ont méné à la naissance des chansons de bergerie et de pâturages et au chant dans la nature libre avec son style personnel d'inteprétation. Entre ces facteurs il est possible de fixer une autre hierarchie: des facteurs écologiques présentent un élément fondamental dont se forment des facteurs "intérieurs" et d'interprétation. Aussi entre des facteurs "intérieurs" et des facterus d'interprétation se présent une dependance hierarchique; des facteurs "intérieurs", c'est à dire la base du chant, le système du genre, et des principes de style se realisent uniquement par l'intermédiaire du chanteur et la récitation concrète de la chanson. Les auteurs suivent l'efficacité des facteurs de variation à un élément des chansons de la mélodie et du texte et ils tâchent de saisir des légalités générales à une complète base régionale de chant, meme si l'autre matériel des autres régions compléterait ou corrigerait leur conclusions en maintes choses., and Článek zahrnuje poznámkový aparát

10. K otázce redistribučních center štípané industrie kultury s lineární keramikou: Litický inventář stupně IIb z Pustějova v Oderské bráně

Všechny osady lidu LnK v poněkud marginálním regionu Oderské brány se vyznačují rozvinutou výrobou štípané industrie. Ta je vyrobena hlavně ze silicitu z krakovsko-čenstochovské jury, jehož zdroje jsou vzdáleny asi 150 km. Téměř na třetině artefaktů lze přesto zjistit zbytky kůry, úštěpy převládají nad čepelemi a jádra jsou stejně početná jako retušované nástroje. Vzhledem ke značné vzdálenosti od zdroje bývají stanoviště s takovou skladbou industrie považovány za sekundární výrobní centra. V diskusi je poukázáno na to, že zbytky kůry mohou být na artefaktech ponechávány záměrně, protože svědčí o jeho původu (geografickém, ale třeba i podzemním). Intenzita a způsob práce se silicity je kromě vzdálenosti od zdroje určována řadou dalších faktorů, jako je např. relaxace nebo soutěživost mezi štípači. Obliba této činnosti v odlehlé hornooderské enklávě LnK, s doklady rybolovu, může souviset i s mezolitickými tradicemi. Druhotná výrobní centra mohla vzniknout jen jako důsledek zvýšené poptávky po štípané industrii, a ta byla právě na sídlištích LnK často velmi nízká. and All sites in the “Oderská brána” Gate, Czech Silesia and North Moravia, a somewhat marginal region from the viewpoint of LBK occupation, are linked by an abundant occurrence of chipped industry, produced mainly from the chert of the Cracowian-Częstochowa Jurassic formation, the outcrops of which are 150 km distant. In spite of this remnants of cortex were ascertained on nearly one third of artefacts and cores are as numerous as formal tools. Because of a considerable distance from the source the sites with such composition of industry are usually considered to be secondary production centres. The discussion makes a reference to the fact that remnants of cortex could be left on the artefacts intentionally, since they testify to the provenance of the stone (either geographical or perhaps even below-ground). In addition to the distance from the source, intensity and manner of working with flint is determined by a number of other factors, for instance relaxation or competitiveness among knappers. The special liking for this activity in the remote Upper Oder enclave and evidence of fishing can be related to the Mesolithic traditions. Secondary production centres could only come into existence as a consequence of an increased demand for chipped industry; however this demand was often very low exactly in the settlements with the LBK.
