Kniha popisuje dějiny dvou původních civilizačních okruhů na území Vietnamu, na severu vietského vyvíjejícího se pod vlivem Číny a na jihu okruhu austronéských hinduizovaných Čamů tvořících seskupení nezávislých lokálních center. Zatímco vývoj vietské státnosti vyvrcholil v 15. stol. vytvořením centralizované říše, nejednotní Čamové museli nadále ustupovat expanzi Vietů. Při chronologickém výkladu založeném na vietnamských a čínských kronikách jsou sledovány hlavní vývojové tendence: přechod od tisícileté čínské nadvlády, kdy byli Vietové přirozenou okrajovou součástí čínského politického okruhu i kosmopolitní synkretickou křižovatkou jihovýchodní Asie, k samostatnosti za dynastií Lý, Tran a Le či mocenské posuny od buddhistické sanghy k vojenským vládcům a neokonfuciánské civilní správě. ,The book introduces history of two civilisation areas in the present Vietnamese territory: one of the Viets in the north developing under direct influences of China and the other of Champa in the south formed by small independent indianized communities. While the growth of the Vietnamese statehood by the 15th century reached its height in the creation of a centralized Confucian realm, Champa in the same time suffered a far-reaching defeat resulting in the gradual regress in the following centuries. Behind the chronological narrative of Vietnamese chronicles, some general tendencies are highlighted: cosmopolitan and syncretic character of Vietnamese society under the millennium-long Chinese rule or shifts of power between Buddhist monkhood, military warlords and Neo-Confucian civil service.

Kniha popisuje moderní dějiny Vietnamu od 16. století do současnosti. Věnuje se rozvoji vietnamské státnosti v prekoloniálním období a svárům mezi dynastiemi Le a Mac a mocnými rody Trinh a Nguyen. Po sjednocení za povstání dynastie Tây Son se nakonec v roce 1802 se zahraniční asistencí chopili moci Nguyenové. Ti v druhé polovině 19. století podlehli tlaku Francie, která ve válce s Čínou získala nadvládu nad Vietnamem. Koloniální éra přinesla disproporční rozvoj, nárůst nespokojenosti a nacionalismu. Po 2. světové válce se Vietnam stal ohniskem válek o vliv západních států, SSSR a Číny. Obratnou politikou Vietnam obnovil lokální postavení a v citlivém poválečném období se modernizuje s důrazem na konzervativní konfuciánské hodnoty. ,The book describes the modern history of Vietnam from the 16th century till the present time. It covers the development of Vietnamese statehood before the colonial era and uder the dynasties Le, Mac and influential families of Trinh and Nguyen. After the Tây Son unification the rule was returned back to the hands of Nguyens with the help of French advisers. Later French took over the outer power in the war with China. Their colonial rule was not satisfactory for Vietnamese and it stimulated local nationalism. The war with Western countries in the second half of the 20th century has led to partial and formal friendship with its allies (China and Soviet Union). Post-war modernisation, own political authority and renewal of Confucian values are the main features of recent development.
