Stať rozvržená do obecné a případové studie se zabývá "naturalizujícími" koncepcemi jako možnou základnou studia náboženství. V první části "Biologie, sociologie a náboženství" jsou připomenuty dosavadní "naturalizující" teorie náboženství počínaje přirozeným náboženstvím osvícenství, přes etologii a sociobiologii až po současné zkoumání v kognitivních vědách, na jejichž pozadí formuloval Walter Burkert ve své nejnovější práci tezi o kulturních konstrukcích jako výtvorech vyrůstajících z "biologické krajiny". -- Oborovým polem, v němž byla podle autora koncepce kultury nejzřetelněji vypracována "nad" biologií, je sociologie. S odvoláním na W. Robertsona Smithe autor klade proti sobě společnosti budované na principu příbuzenství (kinship) a společnosti vyrůstající z konzolidace moci (kingship) jako dva ideální typy všech společenských formací, včetně reformací náboženských, vede ke studiu dějin, tj. ke studiu těchto formací v čase a v pojmech podmíněných prostorovou odlišností. Jinými slovy jde o teoretický posun od biologie, přes sociologii k historii, a to - v našem případě - k historii náboženství. -- V druhé části "Sociologie a studium náboženství: Případ helénistických náboženských komunit" se autor pokouší ilustrovat uvedenou tezi historicky, prostřednictvím tří typů religiozity, které vymezil ve své knize Hellenistic Religions. V protikladu k mocenským typům náboženství jako je náboženství oficiální, státní či říšské (kingship) vymezuje "pietistickou" zbožnost, která je nejnázornější příkladem náboženství založeného na principu příbuznosti (kinship), a gnostické tradice, které se otevřeně dovolávají principu příbuzenství se samotnými božstvy. Autor usiluje o prověření dokladů pro třetí a nejspornější příklad - helénistické mysterijní kulty, které se pokouší interpretovat jako fitkivní příbuzenská společenství odpovídající dobrovolným helénistickým sdružením.
V přednáškách, které jsem na Masarykově univerzitě proslovil na téma "helénistických náboženských komunit" (Religio 5/1, 1997, 21-35), jsem se pokusil doložit, že početní nárůst sociálních skupin, který charakterizuje helénistické období, by mohl být chápán jako rozšiřování a variace "královského" (kingship) typu sociální organizace. Poznamenal jsem též, že "království" (kingship) zakládalo druhý typ sociální organizace, protikladný "příbuzenství" (kinship). V této přednášce rozvíjím tento "královský" model a zmíněný typ sociální organizace ilustruji na příkladech z helénistického období. -- Od počátků helénistického období, které většina badatelů datuje od založení říše Alexandra Velikého, profiluje západní dějiny instituce království. Upevnění politické moci, jež je pro království charakteristické, byla doprovázeno konsolidací náboženské moci, nejprve v podobě helénistického panovnického kultu, podporujícího království, poté ve formě křesťanského monoteismu, vznikajícího jako alternativa království, a nakonec v podobě propojení Konstantinova impéria s křesťanskou církví. -- Model příbuzenství a království (kinship / kingship) jako ideálních typů sociálně-náboženské organizace, předložený v této i v předchozích přednáškách, nabízí východisko pro teoretické uchopení rozličných nábožensko-politických entit helénistického světa, pro pochopení jejich vztahů mezi sebou navzájem i vůči celému impériu.
In their new interpretation of "The Third Symbol of the Miles Grade on the Floor Mosaic of the Felicissimus Mithraeum in Ostia," Aleš Chalupa and Tomáš Glomb present a convincing argument that this symbol represents a bovine leg. Less satisfying is their conventional historiographical method by which the significance of a target problem is assumed to become clear when located in its historical context, in this case, an assumed but never explicated "symbolic world of the Mysteries of Mithras." As an alternative, I have suggested network theory as providing an empirically based possibility for tracking relationships between Mithraic cells and, thus, between similar imagery. Nevertheless, Chalupa and Glomb are to be commended for their credible identification of the ambiguous image associated with the grade of Miles in the Felicissimus Mithraeum and for reopening, thereby, a larger discussion about explanations for the diffusion of Mithraism and of its (supposedly) analogous Mithraic images throughout the Roman Empire.
The historical record shows that no undergraduate departments of Religious Studies have fully implemented a scientific program of study and research since such an approach was first advocated in the late nineteenth century – much less has there been any broad establishment of such a disciplinary field of study. And we argue – on cognitive- and neuro-scientific grounds – that such study is not ever likely to occur in that or any other setting. In our judgment, therefore, to entertain a hope that such a development is, pragmatically speaking, possible, is to be in the grip of a false and unshakeable delusion. And we "confess" that we ourselves have been so deluded.
Religionistika patří, resp. měla by patřit k těm oborům moderní univerzity, jež se na základě renesanční racionality vymezily vůči středověké epistemologické hegemonii teologie jako "humanitní vědy". Nicméně na amerických univerzitách religionistika stále vykazuje vlivy přetrvávající "kulturní teologie", o čemž svědčí jak převážně teologicky orientovaná příprava profesorskéoho sboru, tak teoreticky nevyvážené studijní programy. -- Pojetí náboženství, které je v USA nejrozšířenější a nejčastěji se také prosazuje, v podstatě vychází z protestantismu - profilovaného a šířeného americkou evangelikální tradicí duchovní obnovy (počínaje Jonathanem Edwardsem) a umocněného vlivy německého teologického romantismu (Schleiermacher, Otto). Toto reformní pojetí se opírá o názor, že všechny náboženské fenomény jsou založeny na individuálních náboženských zkušenostech, jejichž společným paradigmatem je mysticismus. Přes teoretické výhrady k oprávněnosti požadavku bezprostřední zkušenosti pronikl tento teologický pohled nejen do samotného studia, nýbrž ovlivnil i výstavbu a činnost největší profesionální společnosti zabývající se v USA studiem náboženství. ...
The proposal for a scientific study of religions (Religionswissenschaft) was born of the scientific impulse that swept Europe from the mid-nineteenth century and that gave birth to the study of history itself as a scientific and autonomous discipline. Increasingly, however, historians of religion abandoned historical methods altogether and the study of religion became associated with an a historical approach in which "history of religions" became a synonym for assembling a phenomenological corpus of truncated and decontextualized cultural data, the temporality of which was disregarded in favor of claims to their being manifestations of a sui generis sacrality. A history of religions, informed by the insights of the new cognitive sciences, can draw upon well-founded theory that can supplement and provide correctives to traditional historiographical tools. Nevertheless, the weight of the 150 history of the study of religion suggests that the future of the study of religion will inevitably differ little from that of its past.
Explorations by cognitive scientists into the panhuman biases of and constraints upon the processing and transmission of perceptual as well as conceptual information by human brains promises historians a scientifically-based set of theories with which to reconstruct past scenarios with greater confidence than previous methods have allowed. This article exemplifies this promise by employing one cognitively based theory, based upon two distinct systems of human memory, for a preliminary study of the Roman Cult of Mithras. Historians have previously understood Mithraism as a cultic tradition with a more or less common cultic myth which historians – despite any textual evidence for the cult – might decode from its abundant material remains. The transmission of such a widely shared myth would have depended upon an encoding of such information into the semantic memory of initiates. The encoding of shared information into semantic memory requires, however, repetition and members of Mithraic groups were initiated but once into their respective initiatory grades. The emotional arousal associated with these rites suggests an encoding of the initiatory experience into episodic memory, recall from which results in solidarity – and even shared knowledge – among a particular group of initiates but argues against any Mithriac myth held in common by all Mithraic groups. and Výzkumy kognitivních vědců ohledně všelidských tendencí a omezení, které ovlivňují zpracování a přenos symslových a také pojmových informací lidským mozkem, slibují poskytnout historikům vědecky ukotvené teorie, s jejichž pomocí bude možné rekonstruovat minulé děje s větší mírou důvěryhodnosti, než jakou dovolovaly předchozí metody. Tento článek je názornou demonstrací těchto možností, neboť využívá jedné z kognitivních teorií, založené na dvou distinktivních typech lidské paměti, k předběžnému studiu římského kultu boha Mithry. Badatelé dříve chápali mithraismus jako tradici s více či méně široce sdíleným kultovním mýtem, který by jimi mohl být - navzdory neexistenci jakýchkoli literárních zdrojů - rozluštěn na základě bohatých pozůstatků hmotné kultury. Přenos široce sdíleného mýtu tohoto druhu by ale závisel na "zápisu" těchto informací do sémantické paměti zasvěcence. "Zápis" sdílených informací do sémantické paměti nicméně vyžaduje opakování. Členové mithristických komunit však podstoupili zasvěcení do svých příslušných iniciačních stupňů pouze jednou. Emoční vzrušení spojené s těmito rituály poukazuje spíše na "zápis" iniciační zkušenosti do paměti epizodické. Vzpomínky na události v ní uložené vedou k solidaritě - a dokonce sdílené znalosti - uvnitř konkrétní skupiny zasvěcenců, hovoří však proti představě mithraistického mýtu sdíleného v rámci všech mithraistických komunit.
A deity with the name of Mithra (Mitra, Mithras) is attested from second millennium BC Indian Vedas to the first four centuries of the Roman Empire. Despite scholarly attempts to trace a line of influence from earlier manifestations of this deity, especially from the Persian Mithra to the Roman Mithras, recent research suggests that the character of Mithraic cults, even those of the Roman Mithras, remains primarily local. Might, however, the recent renewal of interest by historians in network theory – especially, network theory as it has been recast from sociological to chaos theory, to a "complexity-network theory" – show a relationship among the Mithraic cults, especially, among those of the Roman Empire? This possibility is supported by a recent network mapping of the cults of Jupiter Dolichenus in the Roman world. Despite the cults of Jupiter Dolichenus and those of the Roman Mithras both being transmitted (largely) by their embeddedness in the Roman military, there remain significant differences between the two religions that question the emergence of a network of Roman Mithraists. Rather, the approach of the cognitive science of religion, which seeks to identify the pan-human neurocognitive dynamics and attractors that underlie culturally contingent representations, and which has now also been employed by a few scholars of the Roman cults of Mithras, remains the most viable approach for understanding the relationship of diverse practices and cultural expressions of the disparate Mithraic groups.
This paper is a response to the responses to our paper "Religious Studies as a Scientific Discipline: The Persistence of a Delusion" by Hans Gerald Hödl, Hubert Seiwert, Radek Kundt, Tomáš Bubík, and Kocku von Stuckrad, published in this same issue of Religio: Revue pro religionistiku. Some of the respondents actually overstate our position. We have claimed, and still now claim, that a fully scientific program of "Religious Studies", even if possible, is highly unlikely to ever be achieved.
