The objective of this study was to investigate the relative salt tolerance of four eggplant cultivars (Solanum melongena L.) by studying chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters during the vegetative growth stage under increasing salinity levels. The plants were grown in pots filled with peat under controlled conditions and were subjected to the salt stress ranging from 0 (control), 20, 40, 80, and 160 mM NaCl for 25 days. The results showed that the increasing NaCl concentration affected hardly the maximum quantum yield of photosystem (PS) II. The quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII) decreased significantly in ‘Adriatica’ and ‘Black Beauty’ under the salt stress. The photochemical quenching decreased in ‘Black Beauty’ and nonphotochemical quenching increased in ‘Adriatica’ under the salt stress. The Chl fluorescence parameters did not change significantly under the salt stress in ‘Bonica’ and ‘Galine’, revealing their tolerance to salinity. After 25 days of the salt stress, the plant growth was reduced in all cultivars, however, this decline was more pronounced in ‘Adriatica’ and ‘Black Beauty’. Additionally, a significant correlation between the biomass and ΦPSII was observed in ‘Adriatica’ and ‘Black Beauty’. Hα filtergrams and GOES X-ray observations of four homologous flares of May 28, 1980 are analysed. The Hα data gave us information about the spatial structure of the flares. The X-ray data were used to determine the temperature of flare plasma and to investigate its time variations. We have found that the duration of the high plasma:temperature are approximalely equal for all the four analysed flares. The Hα-structure of these flares was complicated
nevertheless we have found only slight changes of the structure from flare to flare. These resulls suggest that a common reviving source of the energy release is responsible for all the four homologous flares. The individual flares are due to successive revivals of the energy source. The conditions of the energy flow along the magnetic field lines emerging from the energy source
determine which parts of the chromosphere are seen in the
Hα emission.
Dictyterina cholodkowskii (Skrjabin, 1914) is recorded from iMnius collurio L. in Bulgaria (new geographical record). The species is redescribed and figured. A full list of synonyms is presented; it includes, among the other synonyms, Deltokeras delachauxi Hsii, 1935 (new synonym), Biulerina passerina of Oshmarin (1963) and Paruterina parallelipipeda of Paspalev and Paspaleva (1972). A survey of published records characterizes D. cholodkowskii as limited to the Palaearctic in six species of the genus Lanius (Aves, Passeriformes, Laniidae).
Different aspects of star formatlon are discussed on the basis of new submm observations. In NGC2024 slx cold (T-16K) and dense (nH“lE8-lE9cm^-3) so far unknown condensations are found and interpreted as isothermal protostars. The density and temperature structure around massive early type stars which are deeply embedded in dense regions is discussed by means of thermai
emission from dust. A star formation efficiency of 8% is derived from 90 compact HII regions. A comparison with the star formation in normal spiral galaxles and active Markarlan objects leads to a
new deflnltion of actlvity. The L/M ratlo of active sytems is by a factor of 20 higher than the corresponding value in normal splrals and galactic HII regions.
The appearance of variations in the protein profile of Ostertagia ostertagi (Stiles, 1892) infective larvae (L3), which were induced by hypobiosis triggering factors, was evaluated by means of SDS-PAGE and densitometric analysts. Area integration analyses of their protein profiles was carried out between 66 and 77 kDa. Important quantitative variations were identified in the protein levels of the induced larvae, where a 5.25 fold increase compared to the control was observed. Two 75.4 and 70 kDa protein bands were found which exceeded the control profile by 4.5 and 44 fold, respectively. This fact suggests that the changes brought about in the process of hypobiosis induction are restricted. This work demonstrates changes at a molecular level corresponding with biological changes induced by conditions causing O. ostertagi hypobiosis.
Since 1951, the Silesian Land Museum in Opava has been publishing its own journal. Ethnographic studies have been part of the journal’s focus from the very beginning. The studies cover museum collections in the territory of Silesia and also field documentation and research carried out in Silesia by distinguished Czechoslovak ethnographers (Drahomíra Stránská, Zdena Vachová, Josef Vařeka, etc.). A bibliography of these contributions from the years 1951-2001 was made up by Eva Ševčíková. All in all, 125 articles and studies were included. They cover ethnography but also related disciplines which touch folk culture or widen our knowledge of its historical forms. These articles were supplemented by 73 selected reviews devoted mostly to regional literature.
The elongated encased spermatophores of the capsalid (entobdelline) monogeneans Neoentobdella diadema (Monticelli, 1902) Kearn et Whittington, 2005 and N. apiocolpos (Euzet et Maillard, 1967) Kearn et Whittington, 2005 have been found attached by their proximal ends to the region of the vaginal opening, with the bulk of the spermatophore projecting from the vagina and therefore lying outside the body. In spite of previous reports, no spermatophores were found projecting from the common genital opening and if spermatophore exchange is as rapid as it is in the related entobdelline Entobdella soleae, then the chances of finding a spermatophore in this location are small. In N. diadema and N. apiocolpos it is likely that sperm enters the vagina through the open proximal end of an attached spermatophore, after which the empty spermatophore case is probably discarded. There is no evidence for a previous proposal that the whole spermatophore is engulfed by the vagina followed by digestion of the case to release the sperm. Three specimens of N. diadema were found each with two spermatophore cases projecting from the vagina and a specimen of N. apiocolpos carried three cases. Assuming that each parasite is able to donate or receive only one spermatophore at each mating, then the presence of one spermatophore does not prevent a further mating and acceptance of a fresh spermatophore. In spite of differences between the spermatophores of E. soleae and N. diadema/N. apiocolpos, the events of spermatophore exchange may be similar.
