2. Effect of repeated infestations of BALB/c mice with Ixodes ricinus nymphs on tick-borne encephalitis virus infection

- The effect of repeated infestations of BALB/c mice with Ixodes ricinus (L.) nymphs on tick borne encephalitis (TBE) virus infection was studied. Enhancement of nymphal feeding, occurring in noninfected mice during the quaternary infestations, was less apparent or absent in female nymphs engorged on TBE virus infected mice. The mice infected with TBE virus during quaternary tick infestation survived significantly longer (P < 0.01) than mice infected with TBE virus during the primary tick infestation. The mean titre of virus in murine blood (determined by plaque assay) was significantly lower (P < 0.01) and the number of nymphs acquiring virus was reduced (P < 0.05) when feeding on hosts infected during the quaternary infestation. The results indicate that repeated infestations of I. ricinus nymphs on BALB/c mice, although enhancing tick feeding, reduced infection with TBE virus when inoculated intraperitoneally.

- The article describes the measurement of spectrum of a luminescent diode by means of interference spectroscopy. The form of the spectral density is determined from the measured autocorrelation function. The autocorrelation function is measured by means of Michelson interferometer. Basic relations for the calculation of spectral density from the measured autocorrelation function are derived. The focus of the article is concentrated on the correct setting of sampling parameters of the interference spectrometer.

- The paper describes the results achieved by electron beam lithography when using an electron beam writer BS 600. The impacts of interference that are common in industrial areas are discussed. Electromagnetic field in the critical place i.e. along an electron beam axis is considered to be the predominant source of disturbances. An installation of a magnetic field cancelling system is described. The best resolution achievable in both cases (the magnetic field cancelling system being on or off) are presented. It is supposed that the results and experience described herein would be helpful when new laboratories and operations for nanotechnologies will be designed and built. and Příspěvek se zabývá výsledky dosaženými při litografických operacích s využitím elektronového litografu BS 600. Článek diskutuje zejména vliv rušení v běžném průmyslovém prostředí na parametry dosažitelné při tomto způsobu litografie. Za převažující rušivý projev je považováno proměnlivé elektromagnetické pole v kritické oblasti, tedy podél osy elektronového svazku zapisovacího zařízení. Prezentovány jsou mezní parametry realizovaných struktur ve dvou případech, jednak při dosavadním běžném uspořádání a jednak při využití systému pro aktivní kompenzaci magnetického pole. Autoři se domnívají, že zkušenosti a výsledky popsané v tomto příspěvku mohou významným způsobem pomoci při budování vědeckých i průmyslových laboratoří či provozů se zaměřením na litografii, mikroskopii i technologie obecně, a to při práci s objekty o rozměrech pod 100 nanometrů.

- We found differences between true leaves (TL) and phyllodes (Ph) during ontogeny of Acacia mangium plants as reflected in chlorophyll (Chl) and carotenoid contents, gas exchange, Chl fluorescence, and growth. The production of TL enhanced the relative growth rate of the A. mangium seedlings, allowing the plants to accumulate enough dry biomass for later growth, while the production of thicker Ph in the later growth stage of A. mangium could help plants to cope with higher irradiance in their natural growth conditions. and H. 7. The photosynthetic performance of sterile and fertile sporophytes in a natural population of the fern Dryopteris affinis

- We studied the photosynthetic performance of sterile and fertile sporophytes in a natural population of the fern Dryopteris affinis growing within a riparian forest (Central Italy) using chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence transients, the OJIP phase, where O is for the minimum fluorescence, P is for the peak (the maximum), and J and I are inflections. The “vitality” of the samples was assessed by the maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry obtained indirectly from the fluorescence data (Fv/Fm); in the same way, the so-called performance index (PIABS) was obtained from fluorescence data. The photosynthetic performance (inferred from PIABS) of D. affinis changed significantly with the seasonal development of the fronds. The highest photosynthetic performance was recorded in the summer, corresponding to the period of spore release. The photosynthetic performance decreased in the winter, down to the minimal values of senescent fronds reached at the end of the seasonal cycle (May-June). On the whole, during the seasonal development, sterile and fertile fronds had a similar photosynthetic behaviour, as inferred from fluorescence data. At the end of spore maturation and dispersal (September-October), the fertile fronds showed somewhat lower photosynthetic performance than the sterile fronds, as revealed by PIABS. Being a long-lived fern, confined to humid and undisturbed sites in the Mediterranean, D. affinis deserves to be further investigated as a potential indicator of ecological continuity in Mediterranean riparian forests., L.
