The comparative craniological analysis of the short-barb Crimean gudgeon from the Chernaya River (south-western Crimea) and G. gobio from the Volga River basin, as well as the study of morphological cahracters used for identification of G. gobio carpathicus natio krymensis by B e r g (1949) and G. gobio kovatschevi by B ă n ă r e s c u et al. (1999) resulted in conclusion about the specific status of G. krymensis. Several craniological characters, namely the relative lengths of supracleithra and cleithra, preopercle width and the modal numbers of pores in several bones, are presumed to be available characters for its identification, as well as barbel length.

Conventional methods to preserve adult nematodes for taxonomic purposes involve the use of fixative or clearing solutions (alcohol, formaldehyde, AFA and lactophenol), which cause morphological alterations and are toxic. The aim of this study is to propose an alternative method based on glycerol-cryopreservation of nematodes for their subsequent identification. Adults of trichostrongylid nematodes from the abomasum of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus Linnaeus) were glycerol-cryopreserved and compared with those fixed in formaldehyde, fresh and frozen without cryoprotectans. Morphology, transparency and elasticity of the anterior and posterior portion of male nematodes were compared, especially the caudal cuticular bursa and genital accessories. The method presented is quick and easy to use, and the quality of nematode specimens is better than that of nematodes fixed by previously used fixatives. Moreover, glycerol cryopreserved nematodes can be stored for a long time at -20°C in perfect condition and they could be suitable for further analyses, such as histological or ultrastructural examinations.

a1_Understanding of the diversity of species of Cryptosporidium Tyzzer, 1910 in tortoises remains incomplete due to the limited number of studies on these hosts. The aim of the present study was to characterise the genetic diversity and biology of cryptosporidia in tortoises of the family Testudinidae Batsch. Faecal samples were individually collected immediately after defecation and were screened for presence of cryptosporidia by microscopy using aniline-carbol-methyl violet staining, and by PCR amplification and sequence analysis targeting the small subunit rRNA (SSU), Cryptosporidium oocyst wall protein (COWP) and actin genes. Out of 387 faecal samples from 16 tortoise species belonging to 11 genera, 10 and 46 were positive for cryptosporidia by microscopy and PCR, respectively. All samples positive by microscopy were also PCR positive. Sequence analysis of amplified genes revealed the presence of the Cryptosporidium tortoise genotype I (n = 22), C. ducismarci Traversa, 2010 (n = 23) and tortoise genotype III (n = 1). Phylogenetic analyses of SSU, COWP and actin gene sequences revealed that Cryptosporidium tortoise genotype I and C. ducismarci are genetically distinct from previously described species of Cryptosporidium. Oocysts of Cryptosporidium tortoise genotype I, measuring 5.8-6.9 µm × 5.3-6.5 µm, are morphologically distinguishable from C. ducismarci, measuring 4.4-5.4 µm × 4.3-5.3 µm. Oocysts of Cryptosporidium tortoise genotype I and C. ducismarci obtained from naturally infected Russian tortoises (Testudo horsfieldii Gray) were infectious for the same tortoise but not for Reeve's turtles (Mauremys reevesii [Gray]), common garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis [Linnaeus]), zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata [Vieillot]) and SCID mice (Mus musculus Linnaeus)., a2_The prepatent period was 11 and 6 days post infection (DPI) for Cryptosporidium tortoise genotype I and C. ducismarci, respectively; the patent period was longer than 200 days for both cryptosporidia. Naturally or experimentally infected tortoises showed no clinical signs of disease. 84. Cytotaxonomy and karyology of the tribe Otiorhynchini (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

A cytogenetic study of bisexual species belonging to the genera Cirrorhynchus, Dodecastichus and Otiorhynchus is presented in order to confirm their taxonomic position. The karyotype characterization was accomplished by an analysis of mitotic and meiotic chromosomes after differential staining, namely by C-banding, silver impregnation, DAPI and CMA3. A review of the cytogenetic data for the tribe Otiorhynchini contributed to knowledge of chromosomal evolution in this group. An investigation of five of the species studied showed some similarities such as a sex chromosome system of "parachute type" (Xyp), the presence of 10 autosomal bivalents (2n = 22) and heterochromatin localized around centromeres. These observations are similar to those already described for Otiorhynchini species, and confirm the karyological conservatism of this weevil group. In contrast, another species Cirrorhynchus kelecsenyi has an additional four autosomal bivalents (n% = 14 + Xyp, 2n = 30), which differs considerably from the chromosomal homogeneity of the other genera. Karyotypic evolution in this species was achieved most probably by increasing the number of chromosomes by centric fissions, resulting in variation in the number of acrocentric chromosomes. DAPI-positive and CMA3-negative reactions of heterochromatic DNA in all the species studied suggest that it has an AT-rich composition. Impregnating chromosomes with silver nitrate reveals NORs on one pair of autosomes, and probably argentophilic material in the interspace between the X and y sex chromosomes. The karyological findings support the taxonomical revision of Otiorhynchini based on morphological characters.

A taxonomic revision of Taraxacum sect. Leucantha Soest is presented. Species in this section are mainly characterized by the pale bordered and appressed outer involucral bracts, achenes covered with subsparse coarse spinules, thick cylindrical cone and a relatively short, thicker rostrum, and often white or pale yellowish flowers. They occur in subsaline wet meadows and steppe depressions over a large area including Mongolia, South Siberia, NE, N and W China, Tibet, the Western Himalayas, Tadzhikistan, Kyrgyzstan and E and NE Kazakhstan. Eighteen species are recognized, seven of them described as new: Taraxacum niveum from the Altai and Dzhungaria, T. candidatum centred in Ladakh, Tadzhikistan and Kyrgyzstan, T. album from Kyrgyzstan, T. flavidum from Mongolia and Transbaikalia, T. occultum from East Mongolia, T. virgineum from Ladakh, India, and T. inimitabile from Gobi-Altai, Mongolia. An analysis of syntypes of the names T. dealbatum Hand.-Mazz. and T. sinense Dahlstedt is given. For the safe interpretation of the name T. luridum, epitype was designated. All the species are agamospermous but sexuality and diploidy is documented for a few Transbaikalian plants of the section Leucantha.

On the basis of rich material from Asia, a recently described group of dandelions, Taraxacum sect. Stenoloba Kirschner et Štěpánek, is revised taxonomically. Four previously described species are recognized: T. sinomongolicum, newly typified, T. mongoliforme, with a lectotype replacing the original holotype now not extant, and a new epitype, T. scariosum, a new combination of Leontodon scariosus Tausch, replacing the frequently confused names, T. asiaticum, newly typified, and T. stenolobum, and T. multisectum, a taxon for the first time compared with other members of the section. Three new species are described: T. abax occupies a large range from S Siberia and Mongolia to NE China, T. abalienatum and T. odibile are known from Mongolia and SE Siberia. Taraxacum abax and T. abalienatum represent core species of the section Stenoloba, whilst T. odibile exhibits a mixture of characters of sections Stenoloba and Leucantha. All the known members of the section Stenoloba are agamosperms. Taraxacum mongoliforme, T. abax and T. scariosum proved to be triploid with 2n = 24. On the basis of the authors’ collections and cultivated material from Asia, a recently described group of dandelions, Taraxacum sect. Suavia, is revised. In addition to three species described previously (T. haneltii, T. sumneviczii and T. formosissimum), six new species from Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan are recognized. Three of them, T. suave, T. stupendum and T. margaritarium, possess most of the features characterizing the section Suavia, one, T. suasorium, is regarded as intermediate between sections Suavia and Leucantha, whilst the remaining two, T. nobile and T. venustius, exhibit some characters of another related section (T. sect. Stenoloba). The members of the section Suavia are agamospermous. Detailed descriptions, drawings and an identification key are given.

Description:
Parasitological examination of faeces of 26 snakes kept in Bio-Ken Snake Farm, Watamu, Kenya revealed new species of Eimeria Schneider, 1875 in Telescopus semiannulatus Smith, 1849. Oocysts of Eimeria arabukosokokensis sp. n. are cylindrical 26.8 (25-29) × 15.1 (14-16) µm with smooth, bilayered oocyst wall and a single polar granule. The broadly ellipsoidal sporocysts average 9.3 (8.5-10) × 7.1 (6.5-7.5) µm and possess single-layered wall composed of two plates joined by longitudinal suture. Caryospora cf. regentensis Daszak et Ball, 2001 is reported from Dendroaspis angusticeps (Smith, 1849) and two additional forms of Caryospora Léger, 1904 are reported and morphologically characterised from a single specimen of Psammophis orientalis Broadley, 1977. Systematic status of Caryospora spp. in sub-Saharan Psammophis Boie, 1827 is discusses and all species reported by various authors to date are suggested to be treated as species inquirendae until more detailed data on these parasites and their hosts are available.

Examinations of nematodes collected from some marine fishes off the southwestern coast of Java, Indonesia in 2000 and 2001 revealed the presence of the following six species: ascaridoids Ichthyascaris grandis sp. n. from the intestine of Lophiomus setigerus (Vahl), I. cf. longispicula Li, Liu, Liu et Zhang, 2012 from the intestine of Conger cinereus Rüppel, Ichthyascaris sp. from the body cavity of Lobotes surinamensis (Bloch), and Raphidascaroides halieutaeae Yin, 1983 from the intestine of Halieutaea stellata (Vahl), and philometrids Philometra ivaschkini Parukhin, 1976 from the stomach wall of Trichiurus lepturus Linnaeus and P. psettoditis Moravec, Walter et Yuniar, 2012 from the body cavity (liver) of Psettodes erumei (Bloch et Schneider). Descriptions of these nematodes based on light and scanning electron microscopical studies are provided. The new species I. grandis sp. n. is mainly characterised by large body measurements (males and females up to 41.8 mm and 73.6 mm long, respectively), the length of spicules (0.99-1.05 mm), the tail tip usually without rudimentary spines and by the presence of 44-53 pairs of caudal papillae, eight to twelve of which being postanals. In addition to new data on the morphology of R. halieutaeae and other nematodes recorded, the 11 species of Raphidascaroides Yamaguti, 1941 poorly described from marine fishes in South Asia and reviewed in the monograph of Sood (2017) are considered species inquirendae and incertae sedis.
