We used the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi reared in its host Acyrthosiphon pisum to examine if male sexual attractive responses can be conditioned to an odour (vanilla) that is not present in the natural environment. We used prior mating experience (exposure to females) as a non-conditioning stimulus and vanilla odour as a conditioning stimulus. The behavioural responses were tested in a glass Y-olfactometer just after eclosion (i.e., initial response) and after a training experience (i.e., trained response). During the 10-min training period individual males were allowed to copulate with a virgin female with or without vanilla odour present, or were exposed only to vanilla odour. Wing fanning was a recurrent behaviour which denoted increased sexual attraction to a volatile stimulus. Total time and time doing wing fanning in each olfactometer arm were determined. Vanilla odour, which initially did not elicit sexual-related behaviours, triggered strong sexual attractive responses when males were trained to females plus vanilla odour. Neither copulation only nor vanilla odour only treatments elicited such behaviours in trained males. The results are discussed in terms of parasitoid learning ability and its ecological consequences.
Experiments on copula duration indicate that the nature of mate competition and sperm storage in the large thistle aphid, Uroleucon cirsii (L.), differs from that in the well-studied yellow dung fly, Scatophaga stercoraria (L.). Unlike the situation in the dung fly, second copulas are shorter on average than first copulas for both individual males and females. This suggests that male aphids have a limited amount of sperm at their disposal and that the females capacity to store sperm is limited as could be expected when males were not able to displace sperm from former copulas.
In species with last sperm precedence, post-mating guarding behaviour by males is effective for avoiding sperm displacement by additional males. However, for males to guard their mates under all circumstances may be undesirable, particularly when the population density of conspecific rival males is low. To better understand the effects of rival density on mate guarding behaviour, we compared post-copulatory behaviour in males artificially subjected to different male densities using Aquarius paludum. Our results indicate that males of A. paludum modulate their post-copulatory behaviour based on previously experienced rival densities. and Atsuo Matsueda, Kenji Fujisaki.
The reproductive biology (drumming call, mating behaviour, fecundity and egg structure) of Isoperla curtata, an endemic species from the Southern Iberian Peninsula, is described. The male's mating call has a diphasic pattern, with a mean of 17.3 beats per call (range = 8-27; SD = 4.7) and a duration of 792.9 ms per call (range = 228-1312; SD = 307.9). This call differs from that of other species of Isoperla in having two distinct phases with different millisecond intervals, and is species-specific. Mating lasts between 131 and 3864 seconds (mean = 2180.9 s and SD = 1027.8). Since males and females mate more than once (mean number of matings per female was 1.85 and per male 2.25), the species is polyandric and polygynic. The position adopted by the male during mating is different from that described for other stonefly species. Other mating behaviours are interpreted as displacement manoeuvers, tactile stimulation and possibly sexual selection by cryptic female choice. There was a statistically significant correlation between size and the number of matings in females (r = 0.849; p = 0.016), but not in males. Each female laid between one to four egg masses composed of an average of 88.7 eggs. Maximum fecundity was 319 eggs. The mean egg volume was 80.5 × 105 µm3 which is very similar to that of other Isoperla species. An outstanding morphological characteristic of the egg is the lobed outline of the chorion cells.
The zoophytophagous mirid bug Macrolophus caliginosus is an important biocontrol agent of whiteflies in the Mediterranean region. Periods of low productivity in commercial breeding units and unsuccessful establishment in greenhouses prompted this study of mating behaviour. Here we describe copulation behaviour, the diel mating periodicity and post-copulatory refractory period. A natural plant substrate needs to be provided if one wants to observe the copulatory behaviour of M. caliginosus in the laboratory. There was no apparent directional orientation in the approach of the two sexes, instead males pursued females after "accidentally" contacting them. Males mounted females from above, very rapidly, and without any obvious courtship behaviour, and copulation duration was very consistent (286.33 ± 4.23 s, mean ± SE). Observations over a 24-h period showed that mating was most frequent in the 8-h scotophase and first half of the 16-h photophase than in the second half of the photophase. Mated females became strongly unreceptive to new male mounting attempts, shaking their abdomen and leaving the plant if harassed. To determine the duration of the post-mating refractory period mating receptivity of females that had mated 1 or 2 weeks earlier was compared with that of virgin females of similar age. Mated females remained unreceptive even 2 weeks after mating, whereas half of the virgin females of equivalent age mated. Mated females were more likely to abandon a plant than virgin females when harassed by a male. Most males remated a few minutes after mating for the first time. M. caliginosus is atypical among mirids in that females apparently mate only once.
In this study, aspects of the reproductive performance and behaviour of male Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) were investigated. We report that males of clones possessing an autosomal 1,3 translocation conferring insecticide resistance show a weak trend for a reduction in reproductive potential. Clones with the translocation that can produce males but no mating females (androcyclic clones) did not have an additional disadvantage. The age of virgin males and females affected mating success. Young males and females, 0-5 days old, were the most successful with respect to the number of females mated and number of eggs produced. There was a decline in reproductive potential after 9-10 days into adult life for males and after 4-5 days for females. Mating behaviour was observed in the laboratory and described. Some pre-copulatory stroking behaviour by the fore and hind legs of the male was observed. Females occasionally walked in copula sometimes resulting in the disengagement of the male before the termination of mating. Average mating duration in the experimental conditions was 10.5 ± 4.0 minutes and both males and females readily mated more than once.
The influence of olfactory and visual stimuli on the mating behaviour of Theresimima ampellophaga males was investigated in the field. A female model attached to a pheromone source significantly increased the number of males contacting and showing copulatory responses compared to their reaction to a pheromone stimulus alone. The pheromone stimulus was the primary factor releasing male copulatory behaviour, independent of the spatial arrangement of olfactory and visual cues. The role of the visual cues decreased with increasing distance between visual and olfactory cues. The reaction of males to pairs of models with different characteristics of conspecific females, in combination with a pheromone source placed 2 cm upwind from the center of the line between each pair of models, was compared. The size and shape of the female seemed not to be important, while the colour, posture, sex and species belongings significantly influenced the male's mating reaction.
nvestigating the function of both male and female mating behaviours is essential in our attempts to understand the evolution of mating systems. Variation in mating behaviours among different populations within a species provides a useful opportunity to explore how behaviours may co-vary, although comparative studies are still rather few in number. Population variation in mating behaviour may also have important implications in terms of the evolution of reproductive isolation, the distribution of genetic diversity within and between populations, and the associated ability of those populations to adapt. Here we consider male and female mating behaviour in two populations of the two-spot ladybird, Adalia bipunctata, from the UK and Russia. We find that male and female mating behaviours differ between the populations in terms of the length of female rejection behaviour and the duration of mating, and that this variation is independent of which population an individual's mating partner is from. Our data confirm that patterns of sexual selection and reproductive behaviour are likely to vary across populations in the two-spot ladybird.
