Magnetic resonance imaging has been used for evaluating of a brain edema in experimental animals to assess cytotoxic and vasogenic edema by the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and T2 imaging. This paper brings information about the effectiveness of methylprednisolone (MP) on experimental brain edema. A total of 24 rats were divided into three groups of 8 animals each. Rats with cytotoxic/intracellular brain edema induced by water intoxication were assigned to the group WI. These rats also served as the additional control group CG when measured before the induction of edema. A third group (WIMP) was intraperitoneally administered with methylprednisolone 100 mg/kg during water intoxication treatment. The group WI+MP was injected with methylprednisolone 50 mg/kg into the carotid artery within two hours after the water intoxication treatment. We evaluated the results in four groups. Two control groups (CG, WI) and two experimental groups (WIMP, WI+MP). Rats were subjected to MR scanning 24 h after edema induction. We observed significantly increased ADC values in group WI in both evaluated areas - cortex and hippocampus, which proved the occurrence of experimental vasogenic edema, while ADC values in groups WIMP and WI+MP were not increased, indicating that the experimental edema was not developed and thus confirming the protective effect of MP., Petr Kozler, Vít Herynek, Dana Marešová, Pablo D. Infiltration-outflow experiments were performed on undisturbed soil samples of coarse sandy loam simultaneously with the imaging of flow process by means of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The flow in soil under study is highly preferential and exhibits time instability of soil hydraulic properties. For the transient part of infiltration runs, fast 2D imaging was used. For the steady state flow and for the equilibrium state after drainage, horizontal 2D imaging and mapping of longitudinal relaxation (T1) was performed. To obtain the information about internal soil structure all samples were imaged by the computer tomography (CT). The results of all the measurements represent a unique data set. For each sample it contains a record of cumulative infiltration and outflow, hydraulic pressure heads and the simultaneous MR visualization of each particular experiment. Suction pressure heads show a good agreement with the propagation of the wetting front in the sample as displayed by the MR at the very beginning of the each infiltration run. Presented data are the result of first experiment, where MR imaging of infiltration into undisturbed soil samples was combined with concurrent monitoring of suction pressure heads. The next step is to use the gained data for modeling of the infiltration in heterogeneous soil. and Uskutečnili jsme infiltračně výtokový experiment na neporušených vzorcích hlinitopísčité půdy za souběžného snímkování metodou magnetické rezonance (MR). Zkoumaná půda vykazuje výrazné preferenční proudění a časovou závislost hydraulických charakteristik.
The article focuses on the application of the segmentation algorithm based on the numerical solution of the Allen-Cahn non-linear diffusion partial differential equation. This equation is related to the motion of curves by mean curvature. It exhibits several suitable mathematical properties including stable solution profile. This allows the user to follow accurately the position of the segmentation curve by bringing it quickly to the vicinity of the segmented object and by approaching the details of the segmentation curve. The purpose of the article is to indicate how the algorithm parameters are set up and to show how the algorithm behaves when applied to the particular class of medical data. In detail we describe the algorithm parameters influencing the segmentation procedure. The left ventricle volume estimated by the segmentation of scanned slices is evaluated through the cardiac cycle. Consequently, the ejection fraction is evaluated. The described approach allows the user to process cardiac cine MR images in an automated way and represents, therefore, an alternative to other commonly used methods. Based on the physical and mathematical background, the presented algorithm exhibits the stable behavior in the segmentation of MRI test data, it is computationally efficient and allows the user to perform various implementation improvements.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between Toxoplasma gondii (Nicolle et Manceaux, 1908) and stuttering. We investigated the seropositivity rate for anti-T. gondii IgG and antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in stuttering children to ascertain a possible relationship between T. gondii infection and stuttering. We selected 65 stuttering children and 65 control children (non-stutterers) to investigate the seropositivity rate of anti-T. gondii antibodies by ELISA. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and scalp electroencephalography (EEG) were also performed in stuttering children. The seropositivity rate of anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies among stuttering children (28%) was significantly higher than in control group (5%; p = 0.001). No abnormality was detected in cranial MRI's of stutttering children and their EEG recordings were also normal. There was no significant difference in seropositivity rate regarding age, genders and residence area. The association between seroprevalence of infection with T. gondii and stuttering may be due to hyperdopaminergic state in brains of patients who are T. gondii-seropositive. Thus, there might be a causal relationship between toxoplasmosis and stuttering., Tuncay Çelik, Cem Gökçen, Özgür Aytaş, Aysima Özçelik, Mustafa Çelik, Nurdan Çoban., and Obsahuje bibliografii
