The swimbladder parasite Anguillicola crassus Kuwahara, Niimi et Itagaki, 1974 (Nematoda: Dracunculoidea) is a well-known pathogenic parasite of the Japanese and European eels. Numerous studies on the life cycle of the parasite have revealed the involvement of a copepod or an ostracod intermediate host and a fish paratenic host, in which the third-stage larvae (Lj) infective to the eel develop. The present study comprised infection experiments with the larvae of A. crassus. These experiments can be divided into three groups: (1) experimental reproduction of the parasite's life cycle via copepod intermediate hosts and fish paratenic hosts, (2) infection of another potential paratenic host with third-stage larvae of A. crassus collected from a paratenic host; (3) study of the ability of larvae damaged by paratenic hosts to infect the final host, the eel. Infection experiments have revealed that larvae which are still viable but have become encapsulated as a result of the host reaction mounted against them by cyprinid paratenic hosts (bleak, Alhumus alhumus) have lost their ability to infect the final host, the eel. At the same time, experimental infection of the eel with larvae derived from other paratenic fish hosts (river goby, Neogobius fluviati-lis: ruffe, Gymnocephalus cemua) showing no or only weak host reaction proved to be successful.
Cercariae and metacercariae of three species of the Microphallidae Travassos, 1920 were found in snails and crustaceans from tributaries of the Brisbane River, Queensland, Australia. Specimens of Maritrema brevisacciferum Shimazu et Pearson, 1991 and Microphallus minutus Johnston, 1948, which have previously been reported in Queensland, were found as cercariae in the tateid gastropod Posticobia brazieri (Smith) and as metacercariae of M. brevisacciferum in the atyid shrimp Caridina indistincta Calman and of M. minutus in the parastacid crayfish Cherax dispar Reik. Combined analysis of morphological and molecular data, based on newly generated ITS2 and partial 28S rDNA data, linked cercariae and metacercariae for both species. This is the first report of the first intermediate hosts of M. brevisacciferum and M. minutus. Infections of another unidentified microphallid metacercariae, Microphallidae gen. sp., were found in P. brazieri and C. indistincta. The sequences of metacercarial isolates from both hosts were identical. Daniconema anguillae Moravec et Koie, 1987 larvae measuring 1.64-1.76 mm were occasionally found in considerable numbers in the fins and subcutaneous connective tissue of approximately 50% of eel Anguilla anguilla (L.) sampled from Lake Balaton, Hungary. The larvae were noted for their slender body, very long tail with a rounded tip, a densely transversely striated cuticle, and the presence of boring tooth and large kidney-shaped amphids on the cephalic end. The larvae could easily be recovered from the above mentioned organs by placing them into isotonic saline solution. No disease signs or pathological changes attributable to the larval infection could be observed. The only histological indication of host reaction was the appearance of macrophages adhering to the body surface of larvae and of cells with spherical nucleus in areas around the larvae. A possible life cycle pattern of I), anguillae is discussed.
