- Description:
- The article briefly summarises the history of the historical library in the convent of the Order of Preachers at St Giles’ in Prague. This is followed by a report on the grant project of an internal competition of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University the aims of which were to write scientific papers and to make a list of separately printed occasional sermons deposited in the mentioned library in archival boxes under shelf marks E II 97–461 and E III 118–255. The paper deals with the character of this collection of texts, their content, authors, and time and place of their origin. The investigation of the content of the boxes has revealed that the project may also help to specify some records in Bibliografie cizojazyčných bohemikálních tisků 1501–1800 (A Bibliography of Foreign-Language Printed Bohemica from 1501–1800; BCBT).

- Description:
- By a patent of 10 March 1770, Empress Maria Teresa ordered a register and census to be carried out in Bohemia, Lower Austria and the Habsburg Erblande of all persons, draft animals and houses with the aim of reorganizing military sectors and determining the defensive capability of the population. Conscription was carried out door-to-door by senior army officers in conjunction with regional commissars, or in the case of Prague with councillors from the various municipalities. In Prague New Town, the recruitment commission began work on 1 October 1770 and finished on 19 February 1771. This study is devoted to members of the painting profession – painters and their assistants (varnishers and gilders) – whose names are to be found in these records. Painters were to some extent a special case since, unlike most other artisans, they were legally permitted to carry out their trade in various different ways. The study thus looks not only at the circumstances, origin and age of individual artists, but also aims to describe the different ways in which they could conduct their profession. Examining the conscription records, it also becomes clear what a rich source they represent, providing invaluable insights into the population of Prague in the latter half of the 18th century.

44. Přežívající praxe ilegálních sňatků a křtů francouzských hugenotů v 18. století: osvícenský diskurz a dědické právo jako podstatné pilíře v procesu prosazení náboženské tolerance

- Language:

- Description:
- The study presents an empirical analysis of the risky practice of illegal marriage and baptism among Huguenots in 18th century France, drawing on contemporary pamphlets to trace the problematic evolution of French Calvinist inheritance law - a process that played a decisive part in efforts to relegalize Calvinism in the kingdom. Agitators for the reformed church pursued two main lines of argument: Calvinist pastors, both within the country and in exile, made increasingly active use of Enlightenment philosophical discourse that condemned religious intolerance. At the same time, especially from the 1760s on, pamphleteers emphasized the social and economic importance of the Huguenot upper class. Together, these arguments helped overcome received ideas about the risk of an anti‐state "protestant conspiracy" organized by the exile community ("conjuration de l’étranger Huguenot"), which was in turn linked to the financial power of the Huguenot banking families that had been a leitmotif of criticism since the 16th century. Instead, a positive image of the Calvinists’ social contribution was presented, stressing their usefulness and loyalty to state and sovereign. Among their supporters at court were the lawyers and ministers de Breuil and de Malesherbes, who eventually succeeded in pushing through reforms., Eva Hajdinová., and Obsahuje bibliografické odkazy

- Description:
- Studie Karla Veverky se zabývá mešními díly hudebního skladatele Antonia Caldary, jejichž opisy se dochovaly v hudebních sbírkách v Praze, se zaměřením na významnou sbérku hudebnin z kůru pražských křižovníků., This study deals with individual aspects and problems of research on the Masses by Antonio Caldara with source materials held in Prague. Representing the basic material are two copies from the collection of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star along with concordant sources amassed from Czech and foreign archives. The effectiveness of the standard methods used for studying musical sources is put to the test on a selected sampling of material. The comparison of individual copies helps answer questions not only about provenience or filial relationships between materials, but also about period performance practice. The goal of the study is to make at least a partial contribution towards systematic research on the musical life of Prague in the first half of the 18th century, when Caldara’s Masses were significantly represented in church music collections., Karel Veverka., Rubrika: Studie, and Anglické resumé na s. 93, anglický abstrakt 81.

- Language:

- Description:
- The aim of the article is to explain the transformation of accounting with reference to two Moravian cities, Olomouc and Uničov, between the mid-18th and 19th centuries. The article summarizes the concept of cameralism, the practical reasons for accounting reforms at the central level of the monarchy, and the beginnings of cameral accounting in the second half of the 18th century. The first legislation on the introduction of cameral accounting in municipal government dates from 1768; however, even after that year and indeed until 1922, individual cities continued to have a major influence on the specific form of accounting they used. Although sources from the end of the 18th and the first half of the 19th century are preserved only fragmentally, the main change in Olomouc and Uničov, as well as in towns in the Czech borderland studied by Petr Cais, happened around 1850, when the cities started accepting printed forms that remained in use for almost a century. In 1922, binding rules for accounting and cash desk service were published, but this had little effect on the accounting records of Olomouc and Uničov. Their journals and main accounting books maintained approximately the same form and structure regardless of this turning point. Neither did they reflect the various changes in the political system of the Czech state, up until the end of World War II. From this point of view, the cameral accounting technique designed by Enlightenment economists can be seen as a fundamental contribution to the modernization of accounting in our territory.

- Description:
- The paper examines origin and professional background of the scribes of the 18th century Bohemian manuscripts and follows the changes in the social structure of their readers, using the information from several hundred handwritten books and documents. Received data show that the number of scribes is rising immensely in the last decades of the 18th century. The most distinct growth might be observed within the number of scribes working in the rural areas. In the first half of the 18th century the most productive group of scribes are monks. In the last quarter of the century this role goes to teachers and parish priests. Their production, however, often has commercial or official character. Besides in the late period of the century strongly increases representation of craftsmen and farmers among the scribes. Also growth of the number of readers living in the countryside, especially women, might be observed. These changes seem to be the results of educational, administrative and Church reforms performed by Maria Theresa and Joseph II in the late 18th century., Dmitrij Timofejev., and Obsahuje bibliografické odkazy
