Publikace si klade za cíl kulturní analýzu univerzitního prostředí, přičemž jejím hlavním analytickým nástrojem je pojem "mýtus". Autoři chápou mýtus jako kulturní jev spojující současnost akademické sféry s minulostí a jako archetyp ve smyslu psychologie Carla Gustava Junga. Mýtus je podle autorů pevně vázán na symboly, rituály, hierarchické znaky a tradice nejrůznějšího druhu. Kniha představuje americkému a západoevropskému čtenáři univerzitní kulturu vlastní tzv. humboldtovskému okruhu akademické tradice, přičemž v centru pozornosti stojí prostředí českého vysokého školství ve srovnání se situaci v Německu, Polsku, Rakousku a dalších zemích. Významným aspektem je proto charakteristika středoevropských univerzit, které prošly ve 20. století diskontinuitním vývojem. Specifikem knihy je preference náhledu akademické kultury převážně z pozice ne-metropolitních vysokých škol vzniklých v 19. a 20. století Autoři pojali svou knihu historicky, ale nebrání se významným aktualizacím. Zajímá je zejména rozpor mezi humboldtovským ideálem a "akademickým kapitalismem", hledání univerzitní jednoty v rámci diverzifikačních tlaků, tendence k oslabování univerzitních svobod a různé podoby univerzitní samosprávy. Autoři se pokouší svou publikací vyvolat debatu nejen v historických kruzích, ale také u zájemců napříč univerzitní komunitou. ,This publication aims to provide a cultural analysis of the university environment, where the main analytical tool is the concept of the "myth," both as a cultural phenomenon linking academia's present with its past, and as a Jungian archetype. The authors conceive of myths as firmly tied to symbols which abound in education, rituals, hierarchical symbols and various traditions. This book presents to English readers the university culture of the so-called Humboldtian academic tradition, while focusing on the Czech higher education system in comparison to those of˛Germany, Poland, Austria and other countries. Of significant importance are the characteristics of˛Central European universities whose development in the 20th century was marked by discontinuity. This book mainly looks at academic culture from the position of the nonmetropolitan universities that emerged in the 19th and 20th centuries. Although the authors have conceived of this book historically, they are also interested in current issues, particularly the dispute between the Humboldtian ideal and "academic capitalism," the search for university unity within the framework of pressures to diversify, trends which weaken university freedoms, and the various forms of university administration. The authors have tried to inspire debate not only within historical circles, but also amongst those interested across the university community.

Kniha připomínající sté výročí vzniku Filozofické fakulty MU je fakultním příspěvkem k univerzitnímu jubileu. Jejím cílem je rekapitulovat dějiny fakulty prostřednictvím biografické metody, tedy s pomocí krátkých životopisů představujících profilové, významné nebo zajímavé osobnosti spojené svým osudem a dílem s fakultou. V dosavadním bádání nad dějinami školy zajisté nechyběl ani biografický pohled, takto komplexní soubor biogramů ale dosud shromážděn nebyl. Publikace však přináší více: autoři využívají rozsáhlý soubor životopisných dat k interpretaci dějin fakulty z pohledu střídání akademických generací, zamýšlejí se nad formativním generačním prožitkem a nad jevy, které v uplynulých sto letech ovlivňovaly život akademiků a studentů. Jde pochopitelně o jevy pozitivní i negativní; publikace proto není pouze přehledem zasloužilých osobností, respektovaných vědců a charismatických pedagogů, ale otevřeně pojednává i o životních osudech akademiků kontroverzních. Soubor biogramů tak podává věrohodné svědectví o stoleté práci fakulty, v níž se trvale prolínají studium, věda a politika. ,This book, which commemorates the centenary of the Faculty of Arts, is the faculty's contribution to the university's jubilee. Its aim is to recount the history of the faculty by means of biographical method, that is, through short biographies presenting significant or interesting personalities whose fate and work has in some way been associated with the faculty. Although there has been some research into the history of the school from a biographical perspective, there has never been such a comprehensive compilation of biographies. Nevertheless, the contribution of this publication is wider. The authors use an extensive range of biographical data in their interpretation of the history of the faculty from the perspective of consecutive academic generations. They also reflect on the formative experiences through generations and phenomena that have influenced the lives of academics and students over the past hundred years. Of course, these phenomena have been both positive and negative and, therefore, the publication is not only an overview of praiseworthy personalities, respected scientists and charismatic teachers, it also deals overtly with the lives of controversial academics. As such, this collection of biographies is a credible testimony to the hundred years of work at the faculty, where study, science and politics have always been interwoven.
